纯英文读后感 Little House in the Big Woods(大森林里的小木屋 By Laura Wilder)
A Book That Evokes the Rosy Recall of Childhood ——after reading Little House in the Big Woods The very first purpose of my choice of reading this novel by Laura Wilder for, actually, the American children was the effectiveness of the feature of Romanticism from Mr. Meng’s British literature lecture——the study of naturalism. In a sense, I really have the interested in her thoughts about naturalism from an indigenous American writer’ standing or in the view of one who had the experiences that he had been exposed to the nature for a long time. But in fact, it did not give me any hint of the explanation related to naturalism as its showed me. On the contrary, by reading Little House in the Big Woods, I had an unprecedented feeling as though I had been living in the leafy woods by following the author’s paces for many years and it evoked my thoughts in retrospect of the fragment of my rosy childhood. The whole book was written in the form of the author’s biography which vividly narrated her life and grown experiences with her family in the big woods, which reflected her real script of her childhood. Christmas Day might be the author’s favorites among the whole year because Ma always cooked the best thing for Christmas like salt-rising bread, rye’n Injun bread or Swedish crackers. Pa did also too many interesting toys for her and baby Carrie. Every Christmas, uncles and aunts and her cousin would come to visit and she would play the interesting game with them. Those happy children, each of them by himself climbed up on a stump, and then all at once, holding their arms out wide and then the fell off the stump into the soft, deep snow, lying flat on their faces. How free and happy they were! I was touched by the busy but happy atmosphere in the family and the condition that many children played with each other in the carpet-like snow, coming back, snugging in the cosy bed, looking the continuously falling snow. From that , I know the author spent her childhood time in the big woods and it is the big woods that left her the most unforgettably happy impression. However, Sunday might the day that the author hated the most in her childhood. When I read the first verse of that chapter, I felt strange because Sunday was the day that so many people had been expecting to reach so that they could enjoy a good rest. But after finish my reading, I know that was because the author barely tolerated the boring time in Sunday. It was the religious reason in the western, especially for Christians. I know the fact from Bible that Sunday is also called Sabbath when people should end their work and rest. They need to go to the church and listen to the preaching. In the author’s description, in her childhood, when Sunday coming, namely her nightmare coming, she could not laugh even speak loudly. That simply tortured her and made her anguish. It is understandable because it is hard for a 5 or 6 year-old little girl to keep silent and still all the day. But she was indeed forced to do so, like being imprisoned. What I mostly appreciated the book is that the way the author use to narrate. There are many descriptions in detail and the use of figure of speech. The author uses her pen to portray characters’ images. Versatile Pa and Ma——Pa could not only make many interesting and unique toys, but 56making bullet, curving patterns in the chunk.Even in playing the fiddle, Pa showed his great talent. Ma is also talented in making various food without apparatus. There are also alive grandma, humorous uncle George, etc. Little House in the Big Woods really gives me a picture of the American’s life in countryside. By reading Laura, I indeed read the reality of her life and got how she contacted with the world around her in a little girl’s eyes, as well as feeling the great cultural differences of Sino-American habits, traditions and life styles.
