This is the unit of voltage and that of current flow. 【译文】 电学上最常用的两个单位是安培和伏特，前者是电流单位，后者是电压单位。 【赏析】科技英语的翻译讲究简练、精确，不能随便意译，或者对原文信息进行增减。换句话说，科技英语的翻译应以直译为主。这句英文只要注意到this 和that 的指代对象, 译成漂亮的中文并不是难事。null【例3】 My sister goes back to the fat farm again. 【译文】我妹妹又去减肥中心了。 【赏析】有学生望文生义，将这句话译成“我妹妹又去肥胖农场了。”殊不知fat farm是个俚语说法，意思是“减肥中心”。去那里的人须要进行大量的体育锻炼，消耗的体力不亚于在农场干活，而且还要控制饮食，才能取得令人满意的减肥效果，所以才有此一说。 顺带说一下，英语学习者遇到fat一定要小心，比如：You have a fat chance并不是说你有希望，而是“你没有机会了；你希望渺茫”。 再如, Fat cats are always showing off their money意思是 “阔老们总喜欢炫耀他们的财富。” 而chew the fat则跟“咀嚼”和“脂肪”也扯不上干系, 它是指 “闲谈”——几个人聚在一起, 天南地北地东拉西扯。null【例4】 It’s not so good. 【译文】糟透了。 【分析】 口语里有很多习惯表达法是不能想当然地按字面意思直译的。口语里good被not so 修饰意思是“不好（糟）”之意。 【例5】 The research finds that young women are heading for an early grave through smoking and of lack of exercise. 【译文】 这项研究发现，青年妇女由于抽烟和缺少运动，将大大缩短自己的寿命。 【赏析】 head for an early grave字面意思是“正朝着一个早期坟墓奔去”，但这样处理肯定会让读者如坠五里云中。只有舍弃表层含义，挖掘这一习语的内在喻意，才能把这个句子的准确含义表现出来。英语里有很多这类习语，翻译时决不能轻易下断语，定要养成勤查词典的良好习惯。 【例6】 Jack and his wife have had two decades investing in each other since their marriage. 【译文】 杰克和他老婆结婚20年来，一直相亲相爱。 【赏析】 “相亲相爱”是由原文中的invest in each other这一比喻手法意译而来。按，invest常用意思是“投资”，可照此意翻译显然行不通。只能意译出其深层意味。null【例 7】His son lives under the government’s expense. 【译文】他儿子正在坐牢。 【赏析】live under the government’s expense是live in prison的委婉说法，照实译出会让中国读者以为：既然他儿子的生活费由政府承担，那他不定是个军烈属子弟或残障人士呢。因此只能意译出其内在含义。 【例 8】 Springs are not always the same. 【译文】 年年岁岁花相似，岁岁年年春不同。 【赏析】 文学翻译就其本质来说是一个文学再创作的过程，要遵循相应的文艺美学标准，考虑译作的美学效果。但过多关注译文审美效果往往又会译成译者的作品，所以要时时把握分寸，不宜滥用。 【例 9】Love is patient and kind; love is not jealous or boastful; it is not arrogant or rude. 【译文】爱是耐心和善良；爱不是妒忌和吹嘘；爱不是傲慢和粗鲁。 【赏析】此例英汉两种文字几乎完全对应，照字面译出一点也不会改变其基本含义。null【例10】Last night I heard him driving his pigs to market. 【译文】昨夜我听见他鼾声如雷。 【赏析】句中“drive one’s pigs to market”是一英语习语，意思是“鼾声如雷”，如直译为“昨夜我听见他把他的猪赶到市场去了”。可就闹笑话了。 【例11】She was torn between staying at home to watch the TV play serial and going to the cinema with him. 【译文】是呆在家里看电视连续剧，还是跟他一起去看电影，她一时拿不定主意。 【赏析】本例句如照实直译会得到这样一个怪胎译文：她被是呆在家里看电视连续剧和跟他一起去电影院看电影之间撕碎了。nullnull【例12】They pay lip-service to education but don’t work for better schools. 【译文】他们口惠而实不至，口口声声支持教育，却又不肯为改 善学校条件做一些实际工作。 【赏析】把“pay lip-service to”翻译为 “口惠而实不至”实在是一妙译，不仅把原文深层含义表达得相当彻底到位，而且用词雅致巧妙；另外，把“but don’t work for better schools”翻译为“不肯为改造学校条件做一些实际工作”也颇值称道。 【例13】Many retirees are couch potatoes who like popping cold beers and relaxing in front of their $2,500 wide-screen high definition television set. 【译文】许多人退休后喜欢窝在沙发里长时间看电视。他们一边手拿冰镇啤酒，一边轻松地观赏价值2500美元的大屏幕、高清晰度电视里的节目。 【赏析】译文基本上属于直译，但其中把“couch potatoes”意译为“窝在沙发里长时间地看电视”实属传神译笔。null【例14】A: Can you help me carry these boxes upstairs? B: Will a duck swim? 【译文】甲：能帮我把这些箱子搬上楼吗？ 乙：没问题。/ 没的说。/咱俩谁跟谁呀？ 【赏析】鸭子自然会游泳啦！那还用问? 但如果直译就会让人举得莫名其妙。 【例15】People are far more predisposed to making contact with each other than social conventions allow. 【译文】如果不是由于社会习俗的束缚（如果不是有碍于社会习俗），人们本来是很喜欢相互接触的。/ 人们本来是很喜欢相互接触的，但他们的接触却受到社会习俗的种种限制。 【赏析】句子的翻译难点是“far more…than social conventions allow”, 其内在含义较为复杂，如果按照字面意思翻译，只能得出下面这样丑陋的译文：“人们比社会习俗所允许的还要喜欢相互接触的多得多”。null【例16】“Why get involved with that pathetic excuse for a human being? His father demanded angrily. 【译文】“为什么要跟那样的下三烂(人渣)混在一起？” 他父亲气冲冲地问道。 【赏析】“that pathetic excuse for a human being”字面意思是 “可悲的人类的拙劣样品”，但显然不符合汉语表达习惯，意思十分别扭。翻译为“下三烂”或“人渣”十分传神，可视为意译佳例。 【例17】The problem is staring us in the face. 【译文】问题明摆着，我们就是想回避也回避不了。 【赏析】本句如照实译为“问题正在盯着我们看”，不仅意思模糊，而且也没能传递出原文深层含义；译文避开原文基本含义，将其真实含义饱满传递出来，看似简单，实则不易。null【例18】Having this thorny problem sorted out will sort out the men from the boys . 【译文】处理一下这个棘手的问题就能知道谁的能力大谁的能力小了。 【赏析】试比较一下机械直译的语言效果：“处理一下这个棘手的问题将把男人从男孩中区别出来。” 【例19】…and the music reminded Soapy of those days when his life contained such things as mothers and roses and clean thoughts and collars. 【译文】……听着音乐，苏比不禁想起往昔那些惬意的日子----那时他的生活中有亲情，有爱情；衣着整洁，思想纯朴，过得有模有样。 【赏析】句中“mothers and roses and clean thoughts and collars”使用了意译方法，译出了这些词语的隐含意思。如直译为“……音乐使苏比想起了过去的日子，那时在他的生活中有母亲、玫瑰以及纯洁无暇的思想与衣领这些高尚的东西。”null【例20】Their language was almost unrestrained by any motive and prudence. 【译文】他们几乎爱讲什么就讲什么，都没有顾及到什么谨慎不谨慎的问题。 【赏析】原文表层含义是：他们的语言几乎不受任何谨慎动机的约束。但这样直译显然缺少可读性。认真分析可以看出句子深层含义是：他们畅所欲言，无所顾忌，谨慎动机没有起到约束作用。 【例21】Prices and wages are fellow-travelers on the same upward escalator. 【译文】工资上涨，物价也总是随着同步增长。 【赏析】原文字面意思是：物价与工资是在同一个上升的自动扶梯上的同行者。其深层含义是“两者都是一同升降起伏”，明白这一点，译出这句话当不是难事。null【例22】In the national war against Japanese aggression, all patriotic Chinese should spend or be spend. 【译文】举国抗日，所有爱国的华夏儿女都应贡献力量，有钱的出钱，有力的出力。 【赏析】将“…should spend or be spent”译为“有力的出力，有钱的出钱”真乃神来之笔！当浮一大白！ 【例23】Studies serve for delight, for ornament and for ability. Their chief use for delight is in privateness and retiring; for ornament, is in discourse; and for ability, is in the judgment and disposition of business. 【译文】读书足以怡情，足以博彩，足以长才。其怡情也，最见于独处幽居之时；其博彩也，最见于高谈阔论之中；其长才也，最见于处世判事之际。 【赏析】这是王佐良先生的经典译文，半文半白，尽得原文旨趣；译文直译与意译相结合，达到了翻译的最高境界：意美、音美、形美！null直译与意译提示性练习直译与意译提示性练习1. A brewer’s wife may drink of a tun. (提示：字面意思是“酿酒人的老婆不愁没酒喝。”但是这样译显得十分突兀，可借用汉语已有习语套译。) 2. Everyone on my farm knows that he or she must sing for his or her supper. (sing for one’s supper 是个成语，源自街头艺人“凭唱歌来谋生”的社会现象。直译会让读者莫名其妙。) 3. He is like a toad trying to swallow a swan. (提示：直译即可。) 4. Research shows that girls in single-parent families are at greater risk for precocious sexuality, teen-age marriage, teen pregnancy, and divorce than the girls in two-parent families---- --and that this is true regardless of race or income. Also, children in disrupted families are nearly twice as likely to drop out of high school. Boys are at greater risk for dropping out than girls and are more prone to aggressive behavior.（提示： 首先别被吓倒！这段话看起来恐怖，但实际上层次分明，意思 一目了然，正好直译。翻译时应大致保留原文顺序。）null5. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee today extended the olive branch to the Nixon Government by pleading for cooperation in developing foreign policy. (提示：the olive branch 可直译。) 9. Go and talk to my English teacher for me please. If you don’t help me, that would be the kiss of death to my English exam. (提示：与死神接吻，不就意味着什么都玩完了！)null10.The boss always scolds his servant with four-letter words. (提示：four-letter word相当于汉语的“三字经”。) 11.This furniture cost me an arm and a leg, but it was worth it. (提示：an arm and a leg属英语俚语，意思是“一大笔钱”。) 12. No comment!(提示：对于不愿回答的问题，可用这句温和典雅的话回应。) 13. It is easy to compress a gas; it is just a matter of reducing the space between the molecules.
