But a friend of my father's offered me a job—he's an accountant in the city. W: I see. [2] In your application, you say that you only spent nine months with this firm of accountants. Why was that? M: Well, to be quite honest, I didn't like it—so I got a place at the Art College a year ago. W: Did your father mind? M: Well, [2] he was rather disappointed at first. He's an accountant too, you see. W: Have you any brothers or sisters? M: [3] Two brothers, both at school. One's eleven, the other's fifteen--taking his O-levels this year. W: Right. What do you do in your spare time? M: I like jazz and folk music; I go to the theater occasionally and act a bit myself. I read quite a lot, and I've done a bit of photography. W: But I was thinking of a fairly formal thing, you know, like the kind of programs where you are training a person to go into kindergarten or the first grade. M: [ ] Well, teaching them what? Reading? W: Yeah, not just a play situation. M: I think it depends very much on that family's situation and that particular child. And I think even if it's not a play situation, it's not a bad thing. W: You don't think that maybe you start structuring a person, you know, too much, too soon? I mean, I think our educational system is very structured and very repressive. M: Well, if it's more of the same , thing, I agree. But, Bettie, wouldn't it be possible, uh, to start some sort of creative thing earlier? W: You mean like art? M: [ ] Mm, even like reading is creative... W: [ ] Mm... Well, I'm also thinking, too, about what age a child starts to socialize and I don't think they're ready for socializing outside of the family before the age of about five or six. M: Oh, really? W: There are other ways of socializing, uh... uh, with other children than sending your child off to a nursery school. What are the two main points under discussion? A Socializing and honesty. B Schooling and socializing. C Creativity and curiosity. D Reading and educational system. What kind of ability can be developed by reading according to Gray? M: That's right. W: And a fax machine. M: Indeed. W: Yes. How did... I mean, why the photocopiers? M: Everything that's happened in my shop has almost happened by accident. [ ]But when I got into Clifton, I needed a photocopy one day and no one could tell me where to go. So it struck me that if I didn't know where to go, other people were in the same situation, so that's why I started it. And then I added on a facsimile machine because it seemed like a natural progression at the time. And all sorts of people use it. W: Yes, who, what sort of people do use it? M: [ ] Um, a lot of professional people—surveyors, engineers—particularly people who need to send, plans. [8] Because in the past you could send messages via telex, but a telex can't express a plan, whereas facsimile has that dimension, the added dimension. W: Right. And do people send these fax messages abroad, or is it just to this country? M: Well, it's surprising because when I started, I thought I'd be sending things to London and maybe Birmingham, [9] but in fact, a high percentage of it is sent abroad, because it's immediate, it's very speedy. According to Charles, people send messages via facsimile because A it is cheaper and faster than ordinary mail. 四个选项中只有A项Indeed(的确,确实)符合题意。 Mr. Yang is 82 years old.Indeed,he is old enough to be her grandpa. Facing unprecedented problems, the Federal Reserve of the early 1930s couldn't cope.(20世纪30年代初,联邦储备银行面对一些前所未有的问题,无计可施。) A项stand意为“经受,抵抗”,例如:stand the test of time(经受时间的考验)。 A in B for C with D toward 【正确答案】:D 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 [解析] 原文意为“帮助无家可归者达到独立”。 为目标”,例如: efforts toward peace(以和平为目标所做出的努力)。 C项with可与help构成搭配to help sb.with sth.,但此句型表示的是“帮助某人做某事”,与题意不符。例如:help me with my French(帮助我学习法语)。 B项add也意为“增加”,但它的宾语一般是具体数字,例如:add 300 dollars to his normal wage。 第6题 A cover B change C range D differ 【正确答案】:C 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 [解析] 根据搭配原则,range from...to... B项change from...to... In autumn the leaves change from grin to brown.(秋天树叶由绿变黄。) 意见不一致”,但不能说differ from...to...。 A Now that B Although C Provided D Except that 【正确答案】:B 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 [解析] 根据逗号前后的两个分句的动词vary和agree可以看出,前后显然构成转折让步的逻辑关系,所以 B项Although为正确选项。 D项Except that意为“除…… A Hence B But C Even D Only 【正确答案】:C 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 [解析] 本题主要考查考生对上下文逻辑关系的理解。 A when B once C while D whereas 【正确答案】:C 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 [解析] 从上下文逻辑关系来看:前句提到很多无家可归者沉迷于喝酒吸毒,并且患有严重的精神错乱疾病”,后句提到“其他的一些无家可归者不酗酒不吸毒,精神也正常”,前后句显然构成并列关系,四个选项中只有while表示并列关系。 A life B existence C survival D maintenance 【正确答案】:C 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 [解析] 此题的答题关键在于区分life skills(生活技能)和survival skills(生存技能)。 A around B over C on D up 【正确答案】:A 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 [解析] 原句意为“他们缺乏生活技能来改变自己的生活”,turn around意为“转变,使转好”,符合句意。 turn on意为“打开”;turn up意为“找到,发现,出现”;turn over意为“翻转”。 A So B Since C As D Thus 【正确答案】:C 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 [解析] 本题和第49题一起构成一个句型:as sb. puts it意思是“正如…… As the President puts it, “We have no choice but to develop our education,or we'll fall behind.”(正如总统所说,“我们别无选择,只有发展教育,否则就会落后。”)故本题选择C项的As,49题选择A项puts。 第19题 A puts B interprets C assumes D makes 【正确答案】:A 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 [解析] 本题见第48题题解。 There are several sentences in this section. Choose the one that you think is the best answer. Mark your answers on Answer Sheet Two. In such a changing, complex society formerly simple solutions to informational needs become complicated. Many of life's problems which were solved by asking family members, friends or colleagues are beyond the capability of the extended family to resolve. Where to mm for expert information and how to determine which expert advice to accept are questions facing many people today. In addition to this, there is the growing mobility of people since World War Ⅱ. As families move away from their stable community, their friends of many years, their extended family relationships, the informal flow of information is cut off, and with it the confidence that information will be available when needed and will be trustworthy and reliable. The almost unconscious flow of information about the simplest aspects of living can be cut off. Thus, things once learned subconsciously through the casual communications of the extended family must be consciously learned. Adding to societal changes today is an enormous stockpile of information. The individual now has more information available than any generation, and the task of finding that one piece of information relevant to his or her specific problem is complicated, time-consuming and sometimes even overwhelming. Coupled with the growing quantity of information is the development of technologies which enable the storage and delivery of more information with greater speed to more locations than has ever been possible before. Computer technology makes it possible to store vast amounts of data in machine-readable files, and to program computers to locate specific information. Telecommunications developments enable the sending of messages via television, radio, and very shortly, electronic mail to bombard people with multitudes of messages. Satellites have extended the power of communications to report events at the instant of occurrence. Expertise can be shared worldwide through teleconferencing, and problems in dispute can be settled without the participants leaving their homes and/or jobs to travel to a distant conference site. Technology has facilitated the sharing of information and the storage and delivery of information, thus making more information available to more people. In this world of change and complexity, the need for information is of greatest importance. Those people who have accurate, reliable up-to-date information to solve the day-to-day problems, the critical problems of their business, social and family life, will survive and succeed. "Knowledge is power" may well be the truest saying and access to information may be the most critical requirement of all people. The main problem people may encounter today arises from the fact that A they have to learn new things consciously. B they lack the confidence of securing reliable and trustworthy information. C they have difficulty obtaining the needed information readily. D they can hardly carry out casual communications with an extended family. The word "it" (Line 3, ParA 2) most probably refers to A. the lack of stable communities. B. the breakdown of informal information channels. C. the increased mobility of families. D. the growing number of people moving from place to place, 【正确答案】:B 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 [定位] 第2段第2句和第3句。 The word "overwhelming" in the 3rd paragraph most probably means? A humiliating. B permanent. C too difficult to overcome. D too troublesome to hold on. From the passage we can infer that A electronic mail will soon play a dominant role in transmitting messages. B it will become mere difficult for people to keep secrets in an information era. C people will spend less time holding meetings or conferences. D events will be reported on the spot mainly through satellites. We can learn from the last paragraph that A it is necessary to obtain as much knowledge as possible. B people should make the best use of the information. C we should realize the importance of accumulating information. D it is of vital importance to acquire needed information efficiently. [点精]选项A重点在as much knowledge as possible,选项B侧重the best use,可是本段重点不在如何利用,而在获取有用的信息。 The Westlife story really began way back in December 1996 when the three original members of Westlife were performing in a local production of the musical Grease. Shane Filan, Klan Egan and Mark Feehilly were all born and bred in Sligo, a small town a few hours west of the Republic of Ireland’s capital city, Dublin. During breaks the three would get together and sing covers of some of their favorite songs including Boyz Ⅱ Men’s I Make Love To You. The reaction to their singing was so positive that they decided to form a band as soon as they had finished their exams at school. This they duly did and on July 3 1997 they formed I.O.U. The boys organized concerts in the area and even produced their own CDs to sell locally. This local success led to an appearance on TV that was to prove extremely important. Among the viewers who saw the trio perform in a children’s hospital was Boyzone’s manager, Louis Walsh. Soon after Shane’s mother contacted him about I.O.U. and found he had been desperately trying to get in contact with them. Louis Walsh decided to hold auditions to recruit two new members in Jude of 1998. This is when Nicky Byme and Bryan McFadden, two Dublin boys and friends entered the picture. A quick name change and Westside was born. Yes, WESTSIDE. This was to be the quintet’s name until they discovered another band already using the name and a final change to Westlife was called for, The final link in the chain was Ronan Keating, Boyzone’s lead singer, who at Louis Walsh’s request joined him to help and nurtured this raw talent. His experience proved an invaluable help. The next step was to secure a record deal. The band organized a showcase in Dublin and soon reprentatives of every, major record label were offering the bewildered boys contracts. In October 1998 Westlife signed to RCA, a label that had a proven track record with the successful marketing of both Take That and Five, Barely had the ink on the contract dried when they headed out on tour as part of the Smash Hits Show, which led to them winning the Best New Tour Act in December 1998 (this was an award Boyzone themselves had won in 1994 which seemed like a pretty good omen). Styled by Kenny Ho, who was responsible for The Spice Girls image, Westlffe’s first single Swear It Again was released in March 1999. In their native Ireland it went straight to number one and became the biggest selling debut single in the history of the Irish charts. A month later Swear It Again repeated the feat in the UK, staying at number one for two weeks and following on from Boyzone’s dominance of the UK top spot. This success was soon matched all around Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. They look set to repeat their success now in the USA. A tour throughout the States has meant Swear It Again is rapidly climbing the Billboard charts. This is the good news the boys needed as Bryan McFadden recently suffered nervous exhaustion and had to miss some shows while recuperating back in Ireland with his family, blot only that but Ronan Keating’s solo plans have forced him to give up his co-managing duties due to lack of time. More good news, though, is they have recently recorded with Mariah Carey and are due to begin work on their second album. Before the I.O.U. was formed, its members were A neighbors. B classmates. C co-performers. D playmates. 首先要明白I.O.U。 The TV appearance was extremely important to the I.O.U. because A they got to know Louis Walsh at the show. B their talents were recognized by Louis Walsh. C they got great local success. D it was their first concert on TV. 第8题 "The quintet’s name" (Line 3, ParA 3) most probably means A. the name of a five-member group. B. the name of an outstanding group. C. the name which will soon become popular. D. the name which will never be forgot. Which group held a dominant position in the UK’s pop music before the winning of Westlife? A Boyzone. B The Spice Girls. C Boyz Ⅱ Men. D Take That. 根据第6段第3句中的following on from Boyzone's dominance可推断在此之前居英国流行乐坛首位的应该是Boyzone乐队,因此答案为A。 Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the last paragraph? A Bryan McFadden will have to give up the second album. B Mariah Carey has taken Ronan Keating’s role. C Westlife might be upset about Ronan Keating’s withdrawal. D Westlife will have the second album recorded in the U.S. More and more of the world's supply of seafood is coming from farms. Although 80% of the world's seafood comes from marine harvests, there is a major shift under way toward aquaculture now. Nearly 40% of salmon marketed today are raised in captivity, compared with 6% a decade ago. Forty percent of all clams, oysters, and mussels are produced in farm environments, along with 65% of freshwater fish. Between 1990 and 1996, fish-farming production rose from 12.4 million to 23 million tons worldwide, writes Anne Platt McGinn in an article for World Watch magazine. "The fact that world seafood supplies continue to increase at all is due almost entirely to the phenomenal growth in aquaculture," says McGinn, a research associate at the World Watch Institute. Commercial aquaculture is driven by rising human population at a time when over harvested wild fish stocks are in decline and conventional farm production has leveled off. Biotechnology is contributing to high-yield aquaculture through transgenics—the transfer of genes from one species to another. Researchers introduce desirable genetic traits into fish, creating hardier stocks. For example, some species of fish have a protein that allows them to live in Arctic waters. By transplanting this "anti-freeze" gene into other species, researchers have created more fish that can survive in extremely cold water, according to Ag-West Biotech, Inc., in Saskatchewan, Canada. Biotechnologists are attempting to improve a wide range of genetic traits in fish used for aquaculture, developing fish that are larger and faster-growing, more efficient in converting feed into muscle, more tolerant of low oxygen levels in water, and better able to resist disease. Researchers also are seeking plant-based sources of food as a more efficient alternative to fishmeal. The use of plant protein on fish farms could take some of the pressure off wild fish stocks and address the problem of phosphorous pollution because plants do not contain high phosphorus levels. Wheat, canola, and canola oil are being used as alternative feed for aquaculture, according to Ag-West Biotech, Inc. While aquaculture produces a reliable source of protein, the industry is rife with environmental problems, asserts McGinn. Perhaps the biggest concern is water pollution: Fish waste and uneaten food accumulates at farm sites and can float directly downstream into water supplies. Farm-related nutrient wastes as well as nitrogen and phosphorus also promote the spread of algal "blooms" that deplete oxygen and kill marine life. Aquaculture is also an inefficient user of resources, McGinn charges. Fish farms need protein feed, andabout 17% of ocean fish, an over harvested wild resource, becomes food for captive-bred fish. "An estimated five kilograms of oceanic fish reduced into fishmeal are required to raise one kilogram of farmed ocean fish or shrimp, representing a large net protein loss," says McGinn. Fish fanning does not have to be an inefficient or polluting industry. McCdnn predicts that many consumers will choose sustainably produced fish in the future, just as they prefer dolphin-free tuna today. All the following statements are the reasons why commercial aquaculture is pushed forward EXCEPT A the human population is increasing fast. B the wild fish stocks are decreasing due to over fishing. C the cost of developing aquaculture is comparatively low. D there is no improvement in conventional farm production. Biotechnology has already enabled more fish to A change feed into muscle more efficiently. B stand low oxygen levels in water. C tolerate extremely cold water. D grow larger and faster. Which of the following is the defect of fishmeal? A It doesn’t contain much protein necessary for fish. B It is not so easily developed as the plant alternatives. C It creates serious phosphorous pollution. D It is not as diverse as the plant alternatives. The author's attitude towards aquaculture is A optimistic. B negative. C indifferent. D uncertain. According to McGinn, aquaculture will most probably become ______ in the future. A the major resource of seafood B a pollution-flee industry C the major source of protein D an industry of sustainable development 【正确答案】:D 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 [定位] 末段末句。 Is there any evidence that the standard of English as a foreign language has improved in the years since the Second World War? Naturally, as it is the world language, more and mere people are taught it and use it. But do they speak it or write it or understand it better than their patents' or grandparents' generations? Have standards declined? There is no objective way of answering this question. Tests of the traditional sort— compositions, pr6cis writing, and so on—have always been subjective, so they cannot be used to judge whether people have got better or not over the years. But so-called objective tests are useless as a measure of progress too. They have not been used consistently in the same "concentration" over the period they have been in use, so there is no way of comparing exams "now" and "then". Moreover, usually in the form of multiple choice questions, they do not, by and large, test the things that really count in mastering a language. Even comprehension is a partly "creative" activity in real life, as we have to think of possible meanings for ourselves rather than have them suggested for us from outside. And people can be trained in the techniques of multiple choice, while others fail the tests because they have been led astray precisely by their "suggestive" nature, so they are not really objective at all. We are left with only personal impression to go on. My own is that, if anything, standards have declined somewhat in the last thirty or forty years, despite all the new theories, tools and techniques that have been developed. I am not alone in this judgment In Sweden, for instance, Professors Johannes Hedberg and Gu.slav Kofien, two of the most experienced workers in the field; have on several occasions drawn attention to the lack of progress in the teaching of foreign languages since the late fifties. Yet Sweden is a sophisticated society with extremely high educational and academic standards, and very concerned not to be cut off from the rest of the world. If such a country cannot achieve advances in the study of foreign languages, it is unlikely that many, if any, others have done so. Japan is another community where remarkably little progress has been made in the learning of English. It is probably as important for Japan as for Sweden to master that language, and there is much academic effort put into linguistic research of various kinds. Yet the average standard of language learning is abysmally low, particularly for such a highly literate and educated society. This is no doubt in part the result of a vicious circle: many of the professors of English at Japanese universities are themselves incapable of speaking or writing or even understanding the language well. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A Multiple choice questions are objective because people cannot be trained any techniques. B Sweden emphasizes the teaching of English without paying attention to other countries. C We have to depend on our own impression to judge the English standards. D Compositions are useful to test people's English ability because people have to write out their viewpoints. The passage indicates that those who failed tests may be misled by the "suggestive nature" of A the choices. B the reading materials. C the objective tests. D the techniques of multiple choic 【正确答案】:C 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 [定位] 第2段倒数第2句。 The so-called objective tests cannot be used as a measure of progress because A the contents are changing all the time. B the tests do not always focus on the same thing. C the processes of scoring are different. D they contain too many reading comprehension questions. What is the author's attitude towards present English standards? A Positive. B Indifferent. C Objective. What might the author most probably continue to talk about in the following passage? A What's the most objective way to test one's English standards? B How to improve the present low level of language learning? C Why have the English standards declined? D What are the benefits if Japanese people can learn English well? 九、Listening Comprehension (Passages)(共10小题,共10.0分)In this section, you will hear several passages. Listen to the passages carefully and then answer the questions that follow. When did the first award ceremony take place? A In 1895. B In 1901. C In 1962. D In 1968. 【正确答案】:B 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 [听力原文]   After inventing dynamite, Swedish-born Alfred Nobel became a very rich man. However, he foresaw its universally destructive powers too late. Nobel preferred not to be remembered as the inventor of dynamite, so in1895, just two weeks before his death, he created a fund to be used for awarding prizes to people who had made worthwhile contributions to mankind. Originally there were five awards: literature, physics, chemistry, medicine, and peace. [ ]Sixty-seven years after the first award ceremony, Economics was added in 1968. Nobel's original legacy of nine million dollars was invested, and the interest on this sum is used for the awards which vary from $30,000 to $125,000. [ ] Every year on December 10, the anniversary of Nobel's death, the awards are presented to the winners. Sometimes politics plays an important role in the judge's decision. [ ] Americans have won numerous science awards, but relatively few literature prizes. No awards were presented from 1940 to 1942 at the beginning of World War Ⅱ. Some people have won two prizes, but this is rare; others have shared prizes. According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT uae? A Awards vary in monetary value. B Ceremonies are held on December 10 to commemorate Nobel’s invention. C Politics can play an important role in selecting the winners. D A few individuals have won two awards. According to the passage, Americans have probably received the most awards in A literature. B peace. C economics. What is the main topic of the passage? A Energy conservation. B Transportation of the future. C Strip cities. D Advantages of air transportation over railroads. 【正确答案】:B 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 [听力原文]   Although I think the United States generally has an excellent system of transportation, I do not think that it does a good job of transporting people between cities that are only a few hundred miles apart. A person commuting between Detroit and Chicago, or between San Francisco and Los Angeles, the so-called "strip cities", may spend only a relatively short time in the air, while spending several hours getting to and from the airport. This situation makes flying almost as time-consuming as driving. Moreover, airplanes use a lot of their fuel just getting into the air. [ ]They simply are not fuel efficient on short trips. High speed trains may be an answer. One fairly new proposal for such a train is for something called a maglev, meaning a magnetically levitated train. [ ] Maglevs will not actually ride on the tracks, but will fly above tracks that are magnetically activated. [ ] This will save wear and tear on the tracks. These trains will be able to go faster than 150 miles an hour. At that speed, conventional trains have trouble staying on the tracks. [ ] As you can see, maglevs offer exciting possibilities for the future. When are airplanes not fuel efficient? A On short trips. B On long trips. C When flying over cities. D When flying at high altitudes. How does a maglev operate? A It uses nuclear energy. B It rests on a cushion of pressurized air. C It flies over magnetically activated tracks. D It uses a device similar to a jet engin 【正确答案】:C 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 [解析] 短文中说,磁悬浮列车实际并不是在轨道上(on the tracks)行驶,而是悬浮在磁力驱动的轨道上方(above tracks),C项把above同义替换成over,故为正确答案。 According to the speaker, what is one advantage of the maglev? A It is more comfortable than a conventional train. B It doesn't require very much track maintenance. C It doesn't remain in any station very long. D It carries more passengers than a conventional train. What is the speaker’s field of study? A Social work. B Medical care. C Applied physics. D Special education. 【正确答案】:B 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 [听力原文]   Born and raised in central Ohio, I'm a country girl through and through. [ ] I'm currently studying to be- come a physical therapist, a career path that marks a great achievement for me. At Ohio State University, ad- mission into the physical therapy program is intensely competitive. I made it pass the first cut the first year I applied, but was turned down for admission. I was crushed, because for years I have been determined to become a physical therapist. [ ] I received advice from friends and relatives about changing my major and finding, another course for my life. I just couldn't do it. I knew I could not be as happy in another profession. So I stilled myself, began to work seriously for another year and reapplied. Happily I received notice of my admission. Later, I found out that less than 15% of the applicants had been offered positions that year. [ ] Now in the first two years of professional training, I couldn't be happier with my decision not to give up on my dream. My father told me that if I wanted it badly enough, I would get in. Well, Daddy, I wanted it. So there. After graduation, [ ] I would like to travel to another country, possibly a Latin American country and work in a children's hospital for a year or two. So many of the children there are physically handicapped but most hospitals don't have the funding to hire trained staff to care for them properly. I would like to change that somehow. According to the speaker, ______ contributed to her admission to Ohio State University. A the timely advice form her friends and relatives B the two-year professional training she received C her determination to fulfill her dream D her parents' consistent moral support 【正确答案】:C 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 [解析] 短文提到,我很开心自己没有放弃梦想,这表明是说话人追求梦想的决心支持着自己,故答案为C。 The speaker wants to go to a Latin American country to A get the funding for the hospitals. B help the disabled children there. C train therapists for the children there. 根据原文中的work in a children's hospital,联系说话人的目标 physical therapist,可排除A、C、D选项。
