公共英语三级阅读理解专项试题(五) 一、Reading Comprehension(共60小题,共120.0分)Read the following three texts.Answer the questions on each text by choosing A, B, C or D. 第1题    The predictability of our mortality rates is something that has long puzzled social scientists. After all, there is no natural reason why 2,500 people should accidentally shoot them- selves each year or why 7,000 should drown or 55,000 die in their cars. No one establishes a quota for each type of death. It just happens that they follow a consistent pattern year after year.    A few years ago a Canadian psychologist named Gerald Wilde became interested in this phenomenon. He noticed that mortality rates for violent and accidental deaths throughout the Western world have remained oddly static throughout the whole of the century, despite all the technological advances and increases in safety standards that have happened in that time. Wilde developed an intriguing theory called “risk homeostasis”. According to this theory, people instinctively live with a certain level of risk. When something is made safer, people will get around the measure in some way to reassert the original level of danger. If, for instance, they are required to wear seat belts, they will feel safer and thus will drive a little faster and a little more recklessly, thereby statistically canceling out the benefits that the seat belt confers. Other studies have shown that where an intersection is made safer, the accident rate invariably falls there but rises to a compensating level elsewhere along the same stretch of road. It appears, then, that we have an innate need for danger.    In all events, it is becoming clearer and clearer to scientists that the factors influencing our lifespan are far more subtle and complex than had been previously thought. It now appears that if you wish to live a long life, it isn't simply a matter of adhering to certain pre cautions—eating the right foods, not smoking, driving with care. You must also have the right attitude. Scientists at the Duke University Medical Center made a 15-year study of 500 persons personalities and found, somewhat to their surprise, that people with a suspicious or mistrustful nature die prematurely far more often than people with a sunny disposition. Looking on the bright side, it seems, can add years to your life span. What social scientists have long felt puzzled about is why______. A the mortality rate can not be predicted B the death toll remained stable year after year C a quota for each type of death has not come into being D people lost their lives every year for this or that reason 【正确 答案 八年级地理上册填图题岩土工程勘察试题省略号的作用及举例应急救援安全知识车间5s试题及答案 】:B 【本题分数】:2.0分 【答案解析】 语义理解题  题目问的是长期困扰社会科学家的问题是什么,本题依据是第一段最后一句“It just happens that they follow a consistent pattern year after year”,与选项[B]“死亡人数年复一年保持稳定”相吻合。 In his research, Gerald Wilde finds that technological advances and increases in safety standards______ A have helped solve the problem of so high death rate B have oddly accounted for mortality rates in the past century C have reduced mortality rates for violent and accidental deaths D have achieved no effect in bringing down the number of deaths 【正确答案】:D 【本题分数】:2.0分 【答案解析】 细节推论题  本题题干出现在第二段第二句,意思是:虽然有技术进步和安全 标准 excel标准偏差excel标准偏差函数exl标准差函数国标检验抽样标准表免费下载红头文件格式标准下载 的提高为后盾,西方世界的暴力和意外死亡率在整个世纪保持着奇怪的恒定(static),由此判断,技术进步和安全标准的提高并未降低各种原因的死亡人数,[D]项正确。 According to the theory of "risk homeostasis ", some traffic accidents result from______ A our innate desire for risk B our fast and reckless driving C our ignorance of seat belt benefits D our instinctive interest in speeding 【正确答案】:A 【本题分数】:2.0分 【答案解析】 细节理解题  问题是“根据体内风险平衡理论,某些交通事故是由于什么原因”, [A]“我们天生的冒险欲望”;[B] “开快车,开鲁莽车”;[C]“无视安全带的好处”;[D]“对超速行驶的本能兴趣”。 It appears, then, that we have an innate need for danger. By saying "... statistically canceling out the benefits that the seat belt confers" ( Para. 2), the author means______ A wearing seat belts does not have any benefits from the statistic point of view B deaths from wearing seat belts are the same as those from not wearing them C deaths from other reasons counterbalance the benefits of wearing seat belts D wearing seat belts does not necessarily reduce deaths from traffic accidents 【正确答案】:C 【本题分数】:2.0分 【答案解析】 句意理解题  本句大体意思是:从数字统计的角度说,开快车开鲁莽车(导致的死亡人数的增加)抵消了系保险带(引起的死亡人数减少)的好处。 Which of the following may contribute to a longer life span? In England in every town, someone is rehearsing, someone devising, someone performing. Winchester is a good example. Ancient capital of England, population approximately 60,000 when you take in the suburbs. Live theatre comes to Winchester and made in Winchester, week in week out.    It has a 400-seat theatre in the city centre and an arts centre in the outskirts seating 150. These offer a programme of visiting companies on a tour of one-night or three-to-four night stands, moving from one gathering place to another around the country, using moveable sets in flexible space. New productions of classic works, ancient and modern but always live: each performance different because it's different audience in a different town. The tour usually lasts the company two or three months before it's time to settle down to devise and rehearse the next one.    For the performer, touring is a chance to work with the same people in the security of a company unit. But it's also a chance to try something different night: to find out what works by actually doing it. And it doesn't always work. So what if it flops? You are on the road and perform it again in another place tomorrow. The audience will have forgotten by the time you come around again next year.    Each company's different, each has its own style, and audiences get to know them. But Winchester also has its own fringe (边缘) theatre 200 yards or so from the cathedral. This is where live theatre is conceived. The North Pole, it seats 50 to 60 people. Here it's new work, amateur and semi-professional work, sometimes slick (熟练的), sometimes rough and ready. At least a dozen world premieres (首次公演) a year: many of them short-lived, quickly forgotten, some of them best forgotten, but all of them performed in excitement and expectation, neither audience nor performer quite knowing what's going to happen. But one or two shows stick in the mind, some return reworked a year or so later the better for being polished on the live stage, some will work their way out of Winchester onto the touring circuit. Someone somewhere is always thinking of starting a company. Which of the following is NOT ture of Winchester? A It is an ancient capital of England. B 60,000 people live in the city. Many FranHin Street residents covered their doors and windows and spent most of their time in the rear of their houses. Most families with children had already left.    Conditions on Octavia Street were much different.Residents picked up trash. They sat on their front steps and chatted with neighbors. They had three times as many friends and twice as many acquaintances as the people on Franklin.    On Gough Street, residents said that the old feeling of community was disappearing as traffic increased.People were becoming more and more preoccupied with their own lives.A number of families had recently moved. And more were considering it.Those who were staying expressed deep regret at the destruction of their community. D People there own twice as many as cars as people on Gough Street. 从第二段最后一句话“Most families with children had already left.” 1.A pioneering study by Donald Appleyard made the surprising discovery that a sudden increase in the volume of traffic through an area affects people in the way that a sudden increase in crime does. 1)in the way以… 2.Appleyard observed this by finding three blocks of houses in San Francisco that looked much alike and had the same kind of middle-class and working-class residents, with approximately the same ethnic mix. 1)three blocks of houses三个街区    2)句子分析:that引导定语从句,修饰名词短晤“three blocks ofhouses”。    3.HeaW traffic brought with it danger, noise, fumes, and soot, directly, and trash secondarily. 4.approximately ad.近似地    5.ethnic a. 6.They had three times as many friends and twice as many acquaintances as the people on Franklin. The number killed in the Bradford City football ground disaster has risen to 52; more than 70 police and spectators have also been detained in hospital. The match was being recorded by Yorkshire TV when the fire began. When it first broke out, a few tongues of flame could be seen under the wooden seats in the G block of the stand. Some of the spectators walked away casually from the smoke. Then suddenly the fire spread with terrifying speed, and within minutes the whole stand was in flames. Most of the spectators rushed forwards onto the pits to avoid the blaze. In the panic, several spectators were crushed, and police and other fans ran back to the stands to help them. The rescuers' clothes and hair could be seen bursting into flames in the intense heat.    Most of the dead were found piled up at the back of the stand, where they had run to escape from the fire. However, the gates at the back of the stand had been locked before the start of the match. This had been done to prevent people from entering without paying. Eyewitnesses spoke of fans being crushed beneath the turnstile in a desperate attempt to escape.    Throughout the day, weeping relatives trailed into hospitals and police stations looking for missing members of their families. The police are faced with the problem of identifying the victims and dental records and jewelry are being collected to help with the task.    The alarmingly quick spread of the fare was of serious concern to police and fire-brigade investigators last night. They believe that paper and other rubbish that had accumulated over the years beneath the wooden stands provided ready-made fuel for the fire.    Police think that the blaze was started by a dropped cigarette. They also found out that fire extinguishers had been removed from the stands because they had been used in the past by fans as missiles.    The tragedy is the worst in football history since 66 fans died when part of stadium collapsed in Scotland in 1971. At some point, however, we all begin to question our heroes and our need for them. This leads us to ask: What is a hero?    Despite immense differences in cultures, heroes around the world generally share a number of characteristics that instruct and inspire people.    A hero does something worth talking about. A hero has a story of adventure to tell and a community who will listen. But a hero goes beyond mere fame.    Heroes serve powers or principles larger than themselves. Like high voltage transformers, heroes take the energy of higher powers and step it down so that it can be used by ordinary people.    The hero lives a life worthy of imitation. Those who imitate a genuine hero experience life with new depth, enthusiasm, and meaning. A sure test for would be heroes is what or whom do they serve? What are they willing to live and die for? If the answer or evidence suggests they serve only their own fame, they may be famous persons but not heroes. Madonna and Michael Jackson are famous, but who would claim that their fans find life more abundant?    Heroes are catalysts (催化剂) for change. They have a vision from the mountaintop. They have the skill and the charm to move the masses. They create new possibilities. Without Gandhi, India might still be part of the British Empire. Without Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr., we might still have segregated (隔离的) buses, restaurants, and parks. It may be possible for large scale change to occur without leaders with magnetic personalities, but the pace of change would be slow, the vision uncertain, and the committee meetings endless. Although heroes may come from different cultures, they ______. But today he is, essentially, a Hollywood veteran.    Rothas is a sales representative with Mayo Hydraulics, based in California. He has worked with special effects teams to move sets on some major Hollywood films. "Designing the systems needed for such projects makes for challenging and exciting work," says Rothas. "but Mayo Hydraulics' most recent project--sinking the Titanic for Paramout Pictures (派拉蒙影片公司) —takes the cake".    "It was thrilling because it was the Titanic and it was the largest moving set ever built," says Rothas, with whom company President Mark Force, partnered with engineers at Parker Hannifin Corp. to design and build the systems needed to sink the set. I was engineers at Parker Hannifin the first time Mayo has ever gotten its name in the credits Titanic director James Cameron needed to achieve unique special effects for the film. Those included moving three massvie structures--the biggest of which was about the size of the 77-story building tipped on its side. Rothas and Force worked with Greg Paddocking tipped on its side. Rothas and Force worked with Greg Paddock of Parker Hannifin to design the hydraulic systems that would sink a 775-foot, 2-million pound scale model of the original ship; move a 200-foot long interior set; and tilt a 100-foot long poop (船尾) deck set form 6 degrees to 19 degrees.    "I don't think anyone in Hollywood has ever moved anything this big," says Rothas, who has made quite a name for himself and his company in Hollywood circles.    The movie industry makes up a significant portion of Mayo Hydraulics' business, according to business developer Hearty Chambers. Rothas adds that the industry is "Mayos niche market" that not all companies are equipped to serve. "Movie studios are demanding Mayotype service," he says. But despite the high demands, Mayo Hydraulics has been able to deliver time and again and plans to continue to penetrate the profitable market.    "It's a lot of fun and it's out of the norm and there's good money in it if you're prepared to put a lot of hours in," Rothas says.    In addition to being called late at night and early in the morning to deal with problems that arose during filming, Rothas says he spent a couple of 24-hour on the project.
