Unit 5 Why do you like pandas? 【Teaching and learning Goals】: In this lesson, students will learn to use some description words, such as friendly, shy, smart, beautiful , scary, lazy etc. to describe animals. By listening and talking about animals, students can understand others’ preferences on animals and express theirs easily. Students should also know “Animals are our friends” after this lesson. 【Teaching and learning steps】: Step I. Pre-listening activities 1.Preview (1) A video about animals T: In the last two classes we’ve learned many animals.Now let’s see a video about animals. Please record as many animals as you can. Let’s see who can write the most correct words. (Animals: panda, tiger, elephant, koala, lion, giraffe, cat, dog, pig, dolphin, bear, fish, bird, horse, cow, deer, camel, snake) (2)Translate the following words or sentences into English. (a)友好的            (b)羞怯的,腼腆的           (c)你喜欢什么动物?            (d)我喜欢狗因为他们友好并且机灵。            (设计意图:(1)部分通过播放视频方式激发学生对上一节课单词的记忆,巩固回忆所学单词,拓展词汇, 调动学生学习兴趣。(2)部分让学生们通过预习重点单词、短语和句子,对本节课的内容有初步了解。) 2.Leading in (1) Guessing game. T: Now I describe some animals, you guess what animals they are. Please listen carefully. OK. The first animal is friendly and cute. But they are kind of shy. They are from China. They are black and white. What animal is it? Ss: Panda. T: Do you like pandas? Ss: Yes,I do. \ No, I don’t. T: Why do(don’t) you like pandas? Ss: Because they ’re cute/friendly/lazy/shy. T: OK. The second animal is very big and strong. It is also very friendly and smart. It even can help people look after kids. Ss: Elephant. T: Do you like elephants? Ss: Yes,I do. \ No, I don’t. T: Why do(don’t) you like elephants? Ss: Because they ’re smart/ strong. T: The third animal is very beautiful. It is very tall and it has a long neck. It comes from Africa. Ss: Giraffe. T: Do you like giraffes? Ss: Yes,I do. \ No, I don’t. T: Why do(don’t) you like giraffes? Ss: Because they ’re interesting/ beautiful. T: The fourth animal is the king of animals.It is very strong and likes eating meat a lot. Some of them are from the northeastern part of China. Their numbers are descreasing now. They are in danger and the government are advocating their people to save them. Ss: Tiger . T: Do you like lions / tigers? Ss: Yes,I do. \ No, I don’t. T: Why do(don’t) you like lions / tigers? Ss: Because they ’re really scary/ strong/cool. (2) Work on 1a T: What animals do you like and why? What animals don’t you like and why? Now turn on page 28 and look at the pictures in 1a. Match the description words with the animals. You can use some words more than once. ( Sample answers:1--d; 2--b/e/f; 3--b/d; 4--e/f; 5--c/f; 6--a/c; 7--f; 8--e) Step II. Before-listening activities The teacher shows the pictures of animals and leads students to describe the animals in the pictures using“I like …because... but I don’t like... because...” . Eg: I like pandas because they’re friendly and cute, but I don’t like lions because they’re scary. (设计意图:本部分通过猜词游戏引导学生讨论动物,同时导入目标词汇句型,为下面的听力任务做好准备) Step III. While-listening activities 1. T: Now let’s listen to the tape to see what animals Mary and Tony like and why. Circle the description words you hear in 1a. Then check the answers. 2. T: Listen again and fill in the chart in 1c. What words do Mary and Tony use to describe the animals Animals Mary’s words Tony’s words elephants pandas Then check the answers. 3.T:Well done! Now let’s listen for the third time and fill in blanks to complete the dialogue. Tony: Where do you want ____ go now? Mary: Let’s see the___________. Tony: The elephants? Why do you like elephants? Please record the animals you and your groupmates like or dislike. And then some groups may show their result.
