( B ) Across Britain, burnt toast will be served to mothers in bed this morning as older sons and daughters rush to deliver their supermarket bunches of flowers. But, according to a new study, we should be placing a higher value on motherhood all year. Mothers have long known that their home workload was just as heavy as paid work. Now, the new study has shown that if they were paid for their parental labours, they would earn as much as £172,000 a year. The study looked at the range of jobs mothers do, as well as the hours they are working, to determine the figure. This would make their yearly income £30,000 more than the Prime Minister earns. By analyzing the numbers, it found the average mother works 119 hours a week, 40 of which would usually be paid at a standard rate 79 hours as overtime. After questioning 1,000 mothers with children under 18, it found that, on most days, mums started their routine work at 7 am and finished at around 11 pm. To calculate just how much mothers would earn from that labour, it suggested some of the roles that mums could take on, including housekeeper, part-time lawyer, personal trainer and entertainer. Being a part-time lawyer, at £48,98 an hour, would prove to be the most profitable of the “mum jobs”, with psychologist(心理学家) a close second. It also asked mothers about the challenges they face, with 80 per cent making emotional(情感的) demand as the hardest thing about motherhood. Over a third of mums felt they needed more training and around half said they missed going out with friends. The study shows mothers matter all year long and not just on Mother’s Day. The emotional, physical and mental energy mothers devote to their children can be never-ending, but children are also sources of great joy and happiness. Investing(投入) in time for parenting and raising relationships is money well spent. 25. How much would a mother earn a year if working as the Prime Minister? A. £30,000. B. £172,000. C.£142,000. D. £202,000. 26. The biggest challenge for most mothers is from . A. low pay for work B. emotional demand C. heavy workload D. lack of training 27. What is stressed in the last paragraph? A. mothers’ importance shows in family all year long. B. The sacrifices(牺牲) mothers make are huge but worthwhile. C. Mothers’ devotion to children can hardly be calculated(计算). D. Investing time in parenting would bring a financial return. 28. What can we conclude from the study? A. Mothers’ working hours should be largely reduced. B. Mothers should balance their time for work and rest. C. Mothers’ labour is of a higher value than it is realized. D. Mothers should be freed from housework for social life. ( C ) It was a Friday night, and I had just returned from climbing one of the red rocks of Sedona. My faculty adviser(指导老师), Bunny, approached me as I walked to my dorm room. She told me that my mother had been in a terrible car crash and had been taken to the intensive care unit of a nearby hospital. A strong smell of medicine brought an unpleasant feeling to my already turning stomach. My mother’s room was right next to the nurses’ station. As I came into the room, I saw her lying on her side. She struggled to turn around ,but couldn’t. I slowly crept(爬) to the other side of the bed and with calmness I said “hi”. Gently holding my mother’s hands, I tried to keep my composure. She was rolling her eyes and trying to tell me how much pain she was in. I turned my face away from her, trying to hide the tears that were rolling down my face. From that night on, my life completely changed. As my mother struggled first to stay alive and then to relearn to walk, my sense of priorities(优先) changed. In the past ,we had more than our share of the strains(紧张) of mother--daughter relationships. The accident threw us in a relationships of interdependence. We listened to each other, and truly enjoyed each other’s company. My mother needed me. My mother and I had faced death together, and life took on new meaning for both of us. It has been over two years since my mother’s crash. I have grown more in that time than in all the years before. My mother has taught me a lot about parenthood: the worries, the protectiveness and, most of all, the sweetness of unconditional devotion and love. 29.According to the text, the author’s adviser told her that her mother___________. A.the author had got along well with her mother before the accident B.the author had suffered in a car accident, just like her mother C. the author’s mother used to be very strict and uncaring D. the author began to share her innermost(内心的) feeling with her mother after the accident ( D ) We all like watching online videos (视频) of dogs and cats doing funny things. But if you had to decide, which of the two animals would you like better? Your answer may show something about your personality (个性). According to a study led by Sam Gosling, a scientist at the University of Texas, USA, dog people are about 15% more outgoing and 13% more pleasant to be friends with than cat people. This is not hard to understand, since cats and dogs behave differently themselves. “Cats will sometimes engage in games, but usually after only a few minutes, they will give up the game. Dogs, on the other hand, will often engage in games, like fetching a thrown ball, for hours at a time,” said Modern Dog Magazine. Although cat people are less social, Gosling’s study showed that they are 11% more open-minded than dog people. They usually like art, adventures and unusual ideas. They also have more imagination and curiosity. But dog people are more likely to keep traditional (传统的) beliefs and interests. However, their love of a free life style also means that cat people dislike making plans. They just follow whatever ideas come into their heads without planning ahead. But dog people are different. They usually have strong self-control and like to carry out their plans. Despite (尽管有) these big differences between dog people and cat people, there are some things that they have in common, “Both types of people consider themselves close to nature, dislike animal-print clothing and are generally optimists (乐天派),” said Mother Nature Network. But can personality change? Can a cat person become a dog person, or the other way around? In a study done by Stanley Coren, a scientist in Canada, he asked cat owners: “If you had enough living space and there were no objections (反对) form other people in your life, and someone gave you a little dog as a gift, would you keep it?” About 68% of them said they would not accept a dog as a pet. But when dog owners were asked the same question about a kitten (小猫), almost 70% said they would allow a little cat into their lives. 32. According to the article, dog people ___________ than cat people. A. are better at math in school B. are more open-minded C. have more imagination D. are more traditional 33. The underlined phrase “engage in” in Paragraph 3 probably means_____________. A. take little interest in B. take part in C. benefit from D. suffer from 34. What do cat people and dog people have in common? A. Both of them like planning ahead B. Both of them love travelling and adventures C. Both of them care about nature. D. Both of them are imaginative and curious 35. What can we conclude from the last two paragraphs? A. Dog people are more likely to make a change to accept cats into their homes. B. Cat people are more likely to become dog people. C. Neither dog nor cat people like to accept a new pet. D. You can never find out whether dog people or cat people will make a change. 第二节:七选五(每题2分,共10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出正确的填入空白处。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How can we all get more laughter into our lives? When I was young, I had the same experience as you do. But after I talked to my parents heart to heart, we had a better understanding of each other. So try to communicate with your parents to let them know that you are wise enough to manage your own business well. To understand them better, you should always put yourself in their position. Don’t you think that all parents in the world love their children even though they are sometimes strict and serious? If you can spend your time and money wisely, I am sure that your parents will trust you and you will enjoy more freedom. By the way, it’s understandable that your parents ask you to put your studies in the first place. I hope my advice is of some help to you. Yours, Lihua 版权所有:高考资源网(www.ks5u.com) _1234567890.unknown
