NationalBIMStandard–UnitedStates®Version3©2015NationalInstituteofBuildingSciencesbuildingSMARTalliance®.Allrightsreserved.NationalBIMStandard-UnitedStates®Version34InformationExchangeStandards4.1IntroductiontoInformationExchangeStandardsThissectionincludesdocumentsthatoutlineinformationexchangestandardsthroughprocessmodeling,informationdeliverymanuals(IDM),andtheircorrelatingmodelviewdefinitions(MVD)developedtoguideinformationexchangeprotocolsthathavebeentestedanddocumented.Informationexchangeoccursatmanydifferentlevelsandstages,fromprojectinceptionthroughbuildingdesignandconstructionandintofacilitymanagement.ProjectsutilizingBIMsoftwareapplicationsareparticularlyindemandbecausetheypermitanintegratedinformationexchangeforthecentralizationofinformation,whichcanbeinvariousformatsbothinmodelingandteamcoordinationpractices,aswellasinteroperabilityoftheapplicationsforefficientexchanges.ThissectionofNBIMS-USwillgrowasmoreportionsofthebuildingprocessareoutlinedinformatsofIDMandMVDtoformcoordinatedstandardmethodsandguidesforbetterinformationexchanges.4.2ConstructionOperationsBuildinginformationexchange(COBie)–Version2.4AppendixA-LifecycleinformationexchangeforProductData(LCie)SinceitspublicationinNBIMS-USV2,theCOBieusercommunityhasrequestedthreecategoriesofenhancements.ThefirstcategoryofenhancementswastoimprovetheprecisionsoftheunderlyingIndustryFoundationClassFacilityManagement(FM)HandoverModelViewDefinition(MVD).Thesecondcategoryofenhancementwastoaddtheexchangeofenvironmentalandsafetyrelatedissues.ThisenhancementallowedEuropeanusersofCOBietoapplyNBIMS-US™.ThethirdcategoryofenhancementwastoimprovemappingCOBiedatatoXML.4.3DesigntoSpatialProgramValidation(SPV)TheDesigntoSpatialProgramValidation(SPV)informationexchangeistoprovideaprocessusinganSPVanalysisapplicationtoloadintotheBuildingInformationModel(BIM)thespatialprogramrequirementsandassesstheperformanceofthebuildingmodelinsatisfyingtheowner'srequirements.4.4DesigntoBuildingEnergyAnalysis(BEA)TheDesigntoBuildingEnergyAnalysis(BEA)informationexchangeprovidesaprocessusingaBEAanalysisapplicationtoloadadditionalbuildingenergymodelingdataintotheBuildinginformationModel(BIM)inordertorunafullbuildingsimulationoftheenergythatwillbeusedbythebuildingdesign.4.5DesigntoQuantityTakeoffforCostEstimating(QTO)TheDesigntoQuantityTakeoff(QTO)informationexchangeprovidesaprocessusingaQTOanalysisapplicationtoloadintotheBIM,alongwithadatabaseofconstructionrecipes.4.6BuildingProgramminginformationexchange(BPie)–Version1.0INFORMATIONEXCHANGESTANDARDS-Page|2NationalBIMStandard–UnitedStates®Version3©2015NationalInstituteofBuildingSciencesbuildingSMARTalliance®.Allrightsreserved.TheobjectiveofBuildingProgramminginformationexchangeistostandardizeaRequirementModelSpecificationwithsufficientflexibilitytomakeitinternationallyrobust.Thestandardrequirementsmodelwillenableautomatedcomparisonbetweentherequiredfacilityperformanceandthedesignedsolution,i.e.,continuousvalidationthoughdesigndevelopment,construction,andfacilitymanagement.4.7Electricalinformationexchange(SPARKie)–Edition2013Electricalinformationexchangedocumentstheprocessflowanddataexchangerequirementsforthedesignofelectricaldistributionsystems.Asubsequentpartofthisprojectappliestheunderstandingoftheprocessflowandexchangerequirementstoa“real-world”situation,examininghowtheinformationexchangescanbehandledinexistingBuildingInformationModel(BIM)software,usingmodifiedthreeexampleBIMbasedonthebuildingSMARTIndustryFoundationClass(IFC)BIMschema.4.8Heating,VentilatingandAirConditioninginformationexchange(HVACie)–Edition2013HVACinformationexchangedocumentstheprocessmodellinganddata-exchangerequirementsofHVACengineeringdesignpractice,followingInformationDeliveryManual(IDM)andModelViewDefinition(MVD)proceduresdefinedbytheInternationalOrganizationforStandardization(ISO)andbuildingSMART.4.9WaterSystemsinformationexchange(WSie)–Edition2013PlumbinginformationexchangeextendsthedetaildescribedintheIFC4specificationtocoverplumbingpracticesinNorthAmerica.Specifically,itdescribeshowtorepresentdomesticwatersystemsandsewagesystems,wheresourcingandtreatmentisprovidedbyanexternalutility.Itdescribeshowtodetailphysicalconnectivityofvalves,pipes,andfixtures.
