OctoberSkyIn1950'sminingtowncalledCoalwood,HomerHickamisakidwithonlyonefutureinsight,toworkinthelocalcoalminelikehisfather.HoweverinOctober1957,everythingchangeswhenthefirstartificialsatellite,Sputnikgoesintoorbit.Withthatevent,Homerbecomesinspiredtolearnhowtobuildrockets.Withhisfriendsandthelocalnerd,Homersetstodojustthatbytrialandalotoferror.Unfortunately,mostofthetownandespeciallyHomer'sfatherthinksthattheyarewastingtheirtime.Onlyoneteacherinthehighschoolunderstandstheireffortsandletsthemknowthattheycouldbecomecontendersinthenationalsciencefairwithcollegescholarshipsbeingtheprize.Nowthegangmustlearntoperfecttheircraftandovercomethemanyproblemsfacingthemastheyshootforthestars.Basedonfact,thisisthestoryofateenagernamedHomerHickam,growingupinacoaltowninWestVirginiawhereaboy'susualdestinywasto"endupinthemines."ButHomerhadhiseyeontheskyandaloveforflyingrockets...tothedismayofhismine-foremanfather,andtheconsternationofthetownsfolkgenerally.Amisfitforsure,heandthreeofhisequallyoutcastbuddiesbeginmakingrockets,whichtheyflyfromapatchofbarrenlandeightmilesoutoftown...soastonolongerterrorizethecommunitywiththeiroft-timeserrantrockets.However,thepeoplebecomeintriguedandsoonstartcomingoutindrovestowatchthe'Rocketboys'sendofftheirhomemademissiles,andwiththeenthusiasticsupportofMissRiley,theirteacher,plusasignedpicturefromWernhervonBrauninresponsetoaquestionHomerhadwrittenhim,theyfinallyareenteredintheNationalScienceAwardscompetition.Butnoneofthiswasallthateasy,especiallyforHomer,asproblemsmuchmoredirethanflyingrocketsseemedtopushtheyoungmantowardmaturity,aswellastohiseventualdestiny...asaninstructorofourshuttlemissionastronauts.这部电影是美国太空总署科学家霍曼自传故事的改编，叙述他一生不屈不挠的研究精神，和与科学为伍的传奇之路。1957年的维吉尼亚州，一个叫煤山的煤矿小镇，全镇赖以为生的就是地底下的煤矿，这位伟大的科学家家庭亦是如此，而且他的父亲更是煤产中心的高级主管，因此他相当希望他的两个孩子能继承他的事业。但就在那一年，苏联成功发射了全世界第一颗人造卫星，而当那卫星经过煤山矿场时，霍曼抬头仰望着它，心中充满了对科技进步的惊奇与向往，因此他决定开始着手设计计划研究火箭，他找来了他的同学一同参与这项研究的计划，经过了诸多试验与尝试，除了技术上的困难外，还有当时社会较为保守，校方除了赖老师外对于这样的研究并不支持，而且霍曼的父亲也反对他再继续这项研究，接着就在一次警方怀疑飞机场附近森林的火灾时有火箭所引起的情况下，使得霍曼他们不得不放弃这项研究。在往后的日子里，霍曼只好顺从父亲的意思进入煤山里工作，但是他心中对于火箭的研究依然难以忘怀，一直到赖老师再次的激励，霍曼才协同其他同学利用弹道学的推算，证明了那场火灾的起因并非火箭而是军方的照明弹所引起的，从此以后霍曼的心中更加坚定，他更加努力研究，并且代表了校方参与了全国科学展览比赛，虽然他的父亲从一开始就反对他的计划，但也正因为霍曼的坚持和努力，他不但在科展中得到第一名的最高荣誉，更令他开心的是：他的父亲终于肯定、接受他的表现。在那年十月晴朗的天空中，火箭冉冉地冲向云霄，这一幕不但实现了一群青年的理想，更带领了美国进入了新太空时代的纪元.。
