(1) A battery-driven bus, which is not only quiet and pollution-free but competitive
with the conventional bus on cost and performance, has been developed by a
group of British companies.
The prototype(雏形), a fifty-passenger single-deck vehicle, is to go into operation
in Manchester shortly, and hopefully, another twenty will go into regular
passenger service within two years in this city and in other cities.
Unlike the small government-support battery bus now undergoing trials in
provincial cities, whose low speed and range effectively limits it to city-center
operation, the new Silent Rider, with a range of 40 miles between charges and a
speed of 40 mph, will take its place with diesel (柴油) buses for normal urban and
suburban services. Its capital cost is higher (about $120,000 compared with $90,000 ) but lower
maintenance and fuel costs bring it down to a fully competitive cost with the
diesel bus over a thirteen-year life, without taking into account the
environmental benefits. The Chloride battery group, which is developing it in partnership with SELNES (South-East Lancashire and North-East Cheshire
Passenger Transport Authority), is confident of a marked potential of 400
vehicles in about one year. The prototype weighs 16 tons, has a single set of batteries, which take three and
a half hours to recharge. A larger, Mark II type, is being designed with two sets of batteries which can be
charged in under a minute. That will allow low-cost night charging and greater
operational flexibility. 1. What could be one of the main reasons preventing the development of battery
buses?
A. Their limited range. B. Their high cost.
C. Their heavy weight. D. Their loud noise.
2. What is the disadvantage of the battery bus supported by the government?
A. It is too small to be used in crowded cities.
B. Its service is restricted in cities.
C. It can only run at a speed of 40 miles per hour.
D. Its cost is much higher than that of the diesel bus.
3. What does "Chloride battery group" most probably mean?
A. The name of a big corporation. B. A type of bus.
C. Group of battery factories. D. The association of bus manufacture.
4. The battery buses will cost less than conventional buses in the long run
because
A. they spend low capital cost over a long period
B. they are stronger and last longer
C. they can use cheaper fuel and costless to maintain
D. they can be charged at night when electricity costs less
5. Compared with the first model, the second model of two being developed is
A. lower in capital cost B. higher in speed

1788,Captain Arthur Philips arrived in Sydney with 11 ships and 1,024
passengers from Britain(including 770 prisoners).Today there are 2.5 million
people in Sydney. It is the biggest city in Australia, and one of the most beautiful
cities in the world.
There are over 20 fine beaches close to Sydney. Its warm summer climate
and cool winter have made it a favorite city for immigrants from overseas. There
are three things that made Sydney famous---its beautiful harbor, the Sydney
Harbor Bridge, and the Sydney Opera House.
But there are many more interesting things in Sydney: beautiful shops and
threstaurant, for example, rows of interesting old houses built in the 19 century,
and everywhere, the sea. Summer or winter, day or night, Sydney is an outdoor
city.
Some Americans think it is very British. Some British visitors think it is like
America. There is some truth in both these opinions, because Sydney takes from
both the Old World---Europe, and the New World--- America, and makes it into
something that is neither British nor American but truly Australian.

Pressure Cooker(压力锅) safety
When you are cooking with a pressure cooker, you should learn a few
common sense(常识) rules:
1. Never leave the cooker unwatched when it is in use.
2. Add sufficient liquid but never past the recommended fill point. Overfilling
the cooker may block the vent pipe(排气空)and cause the cooker to explode.
3. Set the cooking time. Too much time may overcook the food or too much
pressure may build up in the cooker. Too little time will lead to undercooked
food. 4. If you are new to pressure cooking, follow the cooking instructions carefully.
Heat and time can either result in a great meal or a ruined one.
5. Never try to force a pressure cooker cover open. Allow the cooker to cool
or run it under cool water before trying to open the cover.
6. Clean the cooker thoroughly after each use. Mild detergent(洗涤剂)and
hot water work the best. Do not use stove ash or sand for they may damage the

Telecommuting (远程办公 )
It's 8:30, time for John to start work. So he turns on his radio. Then he eats
breakfast. As he eats, he reads his e-mail and reviews his to-do(备忘)list. Then
he sits on the sofa and thinks about an article he needs to write... Wait a minute!
Radio? Breakfast? Sofa? What kind of workplace is this? Well, actually it is
John's house, and he is a telecommuter---he works at home, communicating with
the workplace through the Internet.
Like John, millions of people--and their employers--are finding that
telecommuting is a great way to work. Telecommuters can follow their own
schedules. They work in the comfort of their homes, where they can also look
after young children or elderly parents. They save time and money by not
traveling to work. Their employers save, too, because they need less office space
and furniture. Studies show that telecommuters change jobs less often. This
saves employers even more money. Telecommuting helps society, too, by
reducing pollution and traffic problems.
Jobs that are suited to telecommuting include writing, design work, computer programming and accounting(会计). If a job involves working with information, a
telecommuter can probably do it.
