Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? People can take care of their
family members better when they live in big cities than in the countryside.
Family members provide us with the sense of belonging and always stand firmly
behind us. Some people are arguing that countryside is an ideal place for people to
take care their family members, for the environment there is much more suitable for
health. I disagree. As for me, big cities are the right place for people to look after their
family.
Firstly, living in big cities makes the medical bills and educational expenses
affordable for people. It is because in big cities, working opportunities are much more
than those in the countryside. Besides, the payment in big cities is always decent. It is
usually two or three times higher than that in towns and villages. That guarantees the
basic needs and living conditions of family members.
Secondly, seniors can be better taken care of when living in big cities. It is because
there are better medical services in big cities as aged people are vulnerable to diseases.
In this case, we had better live near a hospital or an infirmary. When an emergency
happens, such as heart attack, we no longer have to drive a long distance very fast to a
town or a city for seeing a doctor.
Thirdly, children can be better educated in big cities. The reasons are twofold. For one
thing, many top high schools and universities are located in big cities. For instance, in
China, the most influential universities, like Tsinghua University, can be only found in
Beijing. For another thing, zoos, parks, museums and libraries are easily accessible if
living in big cities. We can also enjoy our reading time with children in city libraries
and watch a hilarious pets show in the zoo.
All in all, due to the greater chance of good material life, better medical treatment that
senior citizens could receive and the wonderful education for children, living in big
cities is the absolutely right choice for people to tend their family. (321 word)

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? If you need to discuss
upsetting or controversial problems with others, you should use e-mail or text
message rather than use the telephone or voice-messaging.
A hundred years ago, we rely on word of mouth to convey messages and news.
Thanks to modern communication technology, people nowadays get to enjoy various
ways to keep in contact, such as E-mail and cell phones. But for upsetting or
controversial problems, I would definitely choose ways like texting or E-mail to
contact others.
Consider the awkward case of breaking up. If I chose to call him on the phone, he
might freak out and hang up on me even before I could finish. Then the upsetting
problem remains unsolved. However, if I try to write down my thoughts, I wouldn’t
be interrupted. Besides, the written form is better organized and makes it easier to
clear things up. When he gets the message, he could read it through and then realize
my intention means no harm. And we can probably stay friends afterwards. So in
order to avoid unpleasant arguing scenes, it is wiser to explain the issue in the written
form.
Consider the decision-making process of college major. If I try to convince my
surgeon dad that literature fits me better than meds, talking on the phone is not going
to solve the problem. It is because he would be too stubborn to get tricked by a few
lines on the phone. By contrast, I need to straighten up my arguments and list all the
pros and cons. In this case a nicely organized E-mail would help me to win this
discussion. Therefore, to avoid stuttering or chickening out on the phone, the written
form gives me more time to think calmly.
Consider business negotiations. If I try to confer an upsetting issue with a client on the
phone, courtesy issues need to be seriously taken into account. How to talk to a client
on the phone? When is the right time to call? What am I supposed to do if he consults
matters that I have no idea? However, things become much simple if I choose to write
an E-mail. First I could ask colleagues for tips on business correspondence. Besides,
unlike phone call, E-mail doesn’t interrupt meetings, so I don’t have to worry about
bad timing. Lastly, I could note in the letter for further contact if he would have any
problems. Therefore, the written from allows room for consideration and preparation.
All in all, I think the written form is more effective when it comes to discussing
upsetting or controversial matters. (Written by Bao Lei 407w)
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Two people can become good
friends even if one of them has more money than the other.
Generally, I disagree with statements that two persons cannot be friends if one is
richer than the other. From many TV plays and movies, we always can see that after
long time of crucifixion, a poor boy and a rich girl eventually become friends.
However, these fairy-tale stories only have chance to appear in fairy tale. In the reality,
this will never happen because rich people and poor people have different goals of
lives and different life styles.
To begin with, poor people and rich people have different goals of living. Even from
the beginning of their lives, they undertake the different missions. Since poor people
were born, their goal of living has never changed, which is leading a decent life, such
as buying a spacious apartment, a nice car and having a happy family. However, rich
people’s goal of living is to continue their parents’ business. For example, poor people
will talk about housing loan, but when rich people sit together, they will talk about
buying which building just taken shape. So we can imagine when rich people and
poor people discuss the houses, it is self-defeating for rich people and embarrassing
for poor people.
Secondly, rich people and poor people have different ways of living. On this point,
poor people will definitely repel rich people because poor people feel less confident.
For example, when they finish their jobs, what poor people only can do every day is
to go back homes and stay with their families, while rich people can have different
choices to relax themselves. For instance, rich people can go to the golf courts to
enjoy the fresh air and indulge themselves into pleasure of getting closer to the nature.
Poor people can only sit in front of TV to see the soap operas.
Admittedly, exceptions do exist in some special aspects. Basketball player serve as
good examples. In NBA, about 50 percent of players were born in slums. However,
when they finally own tons of money, they still are contacting with their friends who
were not rich at all. Allen Iverson is a NBA player, but he always holds the parties
with his friends in slums.
All in all, in most cases, people with huge difference in their economic conditions
cannot be friends. (378 w)
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? In a team, those who do not
accept others’ criticism cannot succeed.
A person can hardly be perfect and satisfy everyone in his job, and he will definitely
receive criticisms from his colleagues or employers. Recently a rising opinion, which
I can hardly agree, advises people ignoring all the voices against them and insisting
their own ideas. As for me, it is strongly recommended, or even necessary, for people
to accept criticisms.
Firstly, a person should accept others’ criticisms as a kind of suggestion in order to
improve his work performances, which in turn leads to career success. One will be
considered stubborn and unwilling to cooperate if he refuses to accept criticisms and
admit the drawbacks in his work, causing argues and conflicts among team members
at first. As a result, less people will care about his work; no one will point it out even
if there is a fatal mistake. In the long run, accumulated faults lead to final failure of
his career. On the other hand, accepting criticisms enables a person realize his flaws
and try hard to modify, which results in better jobs and final success.
Secondly, criticisms can help people develop a positive attitude toward difficulties.
One who keeps all the criticisms, intentional or unintentional ones, will grow to be an
open-minded person. His teammates will be pleased to cooperate in his work and give
a hand when he faces a problem. Thus the person will accomplish his tasks
excellently or even impress his employer, which leads to potential success. Confucius,
the most famous Chinese educator, was once criticized by one of his students on his
theory. Unexpectedly, Confucius was extremely happy to admit his fault and regarded
the young man as talented and honest. He modified his theory, gave thanks to the
student, and frequently asked his students for advice when developing new theories.
Finally, he became the greatest philosopher in the long Chinese history.
Admittedly, we should never take those intentional criticisms without any values
seriously. However, it is clear that accepting others’ suggestions can lead to an
optimistic attitude and better performances in work. Therefore, people who cannot
accept others’ criticisms will not succeed in a team. (353 words)
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? We should never be impolite
to another person.
Nowadays there is a wide agreement that courtesy is considered to be a basic quality
people should have. However, people have conflicting opinions on whether we should
always be polite to others. Though the majority of people insist that we should never
be impolite to another person, I can hardly agree.
Admittedly, being polite is necessary in most occasions. Mostly, opportunities and
luck lie in courtesy. For example, an interviewer is more likely to offer a polite
student instead of a rude one a place in the university students’ union; a professor
tends to help a kind student with his problems on However, to say that we should
never be impolite to another person is an overstatement because exceptions do exist.
Firstly, being polite sometimes means we encourage harassment. Consider celebrities.
Pop stars have huge fans that are eager to know the tiniest things about their idols’,
not only their new songs, new movies and public activities, but also who they are
dating and where they go for dinner in their private life. In order to capture striking
news and sell it to the press, paparazzi stalk the famous people wherever they go and
take photos all of a sudden. Honestly, these actions seriously interfere with the
celebrities’ daily life. Once a top singer, who was pregnant at that time, went shopping
with her assistant. The paparazzi waited outside the shopping mall and crazily took
photos of her, which will harm her baby. The singer begged them to stop shooting
photos, but the paparazzi just did not listen. Not until her assistant yelled at them and
threatened to accuse did the paparazzi finally leave. That is a case that politeness does
not work.
Secondly, when a crime happens, it is ridiculous for us to be polite to criminals. On
one hand, it is hard to imagine policemen walk toward a criminal on a crime scene
and inform the criminal in a tender voice that he is under arrest. The normal and
reasonable action for policemen is to pull out their guns and shout “freeze!”, then
handcuff the criminal. No one would agree that pointing guns at others and
handcuffing them are polite, but it is rudeness that works when arresting a criminal. In
addition, being angry about the crime, the witnesses would criticize the criminal and
express their resentment. Staying calm and being polite would be regarded
cold-blooded.
In conclusion, although it is basic for people to be polite most of the times, there are
exceptions that urge impoliteness. Therefore, the claim that we should never be
impolite to others is an overstatement. (433 words)
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Colleges or university should
offer students a better job preparation before they start working. Use specific reasons
to support your choice.
Nowadays, how to get a better job become a hot topic among students and parents.
Some people believe that Colleges or university should offer students a better job
preparation before they start working. Personally, I support the idea, and there are
three advantages for student, university and society.
Firstly, a better job preparation benefits students to seek a better job. For example,
thanks to the help of the training courses of school, I worked as editor in a multimedia
production company now. When I was sophomore, the office of employment guidance
in my university offered course called job preparation for students. The course taught
us how to choose our careers, how to plan our future and how to have an excellent
self-recommendation. With the skills learned in this course, I get a job before
graduation for better understanding myself and what the company needs.
Secondly, a better job preparation benefits the fame of university. For instance, the
competition of education was increasingly fierce. If the universities can offer students
a better job preparation before they start working, more and more students are willing
to apply for these universities, which bring increased income and improve the
teacher’s abilities. The whole level of universities will rise, and the reputation of
university will grow.
Finally, a better job preparation benefits the society as a whole. For example, a better
job preparation improves students to create more advanced products and services to
the society. Take me for example. When I was a senior student in Shanghai
Conservatory of Music, the school helped me to find a part-time job of composing
piano music. It is no doubts that the job was satisfied, and stimulated my passion to
create more composition to some audio, television studios. In addition, good
preparation improves the employment rates, which will strengthen the safety of
society. Therefore, a better job preparation is not only important to students and
schools, but also to society.
Considering the above analysis, I can make a conclusion that Colleges or university
should offer students a better job preparation before they start working, for it benefits
the student, university and society. (354 words)
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Young people in today are
less dependent on their parents than in the past.
People hold different opinions on the topic of whether young people in today are more
independent than in the past. Though there are ones that maintain teenagers nowadays
still largely depend on their elder family members, I insist that they have already
become less dependent on their parents in the past.
Firstly, a robust welfare system allows young people to live independently in the
society today. For example, governments spend billions of dollars to subsidize
primary schools, secondary schools and high schools, making them free for all
families. Parents only have to pay for their children’s living expenses at school. When
young students progress to university or college, they can get financial help from the
government or universities, like scholarships and fellowships. After their graduation
from college, they are mature enough to make a living independently. If young people
lose their jobs temporarily, they will get help from the government to guarantee their
basic needs. However, nobody can expect such a welfare system encouraging young
people to be less dependent on their parents financially.
Secondly, advanced learning facilities or equipment offer young people opportunities
to study independently today. In the ancient time, children read and wrote under the
guidance of parents. For some parents, teaching their children may be so academically
demanding that they have to resort to a home school with private tutor. However,
these situations have changed. Now parents can buy their children laptops and electric
books. Children may learn easily with the electric studying helpers. Consider learning
language. Children can read after the electric books or the laptop programs can
automatically correct students’ mistakes. These all make the learning process more
easily and independently.
Thirdly, young people are required to be less dependent on their parents. It is because
the heavy workload makes parents frequently ignore their children. Unlike people in
the past, grown-ups in modern decades are required to undertake large amounts of
work and heavy stress. Parents are too exhausted to cook dinner, to do laundry or to
help their kids with assignments. Unless children cook dishes, wash their own clothes
and learn by themselves, they can hardly manage to live. Therefore, young people
nowadays acquire living skills at an early age and grow to be independent from their
parents.
From what have been discussed above, we can arrive at the conclusion that young
people today are less dependent on their parents.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Working at home by using
telephone and computer is better than working in company’s office.
Many companies require their employees to work in company office eight hours a day.
Managers in those companies believe this conventional way surpasses the new
way—working at home by using telephones and computers. However, I prefer the
latter one because working at home with modern equipment benefits both individual
workers and the company.
Firstly, working at home is more convenient. Employees do not have to get up early to
follow a set schedule hurrying to their working place. They can choose to have
enough rest at home or get up early for morning exercise. If the office is miles away
from workers’ home, workers usually have to spend much time on their way to work,
waiting for a taxi, transferring from subway to city bus, or suffering severely from the
traffic congestion. Besides, workers may do some house chores during the working
break instead of getting home late in the evening and going to bed with much
tiresome housework undone.
Secondly, working at home allows more personal freedom. Workers can deal with
their daily affairs accompanied by their favorite music; but in the office, neither
loudspeakers nor earplugs are allowed to use. Besides, employees can also choose to
work with the items they love. For example, girls can put their lovely plush toys
around them, making the working process more pleasant; in contrast, people cannot
decorate the office as they wish and stress and nervousness come up in this case.
Finally, offering employees an option of working at home benefits the company itself.
The reasons are twofold. For one thing, the running cost may significantly shrink. It is
because the company no longer has to rent many office rooms and buy many desktops
for its workers. For another thing, the company’s profit. Equipped with telephones
and computers, people can work quickly and efficiently. That is because there is
impossible for them to waste their office time on free chatting. Additionally,
telephones and computers make possible a multi-lateral video conference, allowing
