The switch-over is automatic and can be very fast. Resetting the system to normal operating mode can be done manually or automatically The VHB-3 passes the feedwater from the feed water pump side, to the feedwater heater or to the bypass VHBS-2 is installed at the feedwater heater outlet side. The dump valve shall close and the on/off valve ‘B’ shall stay closed. The filling valve ‘C’ will refill/pressurize the FWH and piping. The on/off valve B opens and evacuates the pressure in the lower chamber of the actuator. The plug isolates the FWH. The VHBS is connected to the same control system and works in parallel with the VHB-3. When the FWH is isolated, the dump valve is opened to depressurize and drain the FWH and piping. The internal pressure in the valves acting on the plugs secures the plug position in bypass mode. The manual hand wheel is turned to lock the plug-stem The hand wheel is secured with a pad lock. The internal pressure acting on the plug results in a force, which tends to maintain the plug closed. The actuator is also acting in this direction to secure a shut-off towards the bypass line. The feedwater from the FWH passes through to the VHBS2or 3. The internal pressure in the valve, acting on the plug, tends to keep the valve open. At the same time, VHBS will close the passage to the FWH, and the FWH is isolated Other signals, such as hi steam pressure, will switch the valves. Manual opening of the bypass system is performed the same way, except that the signal to open is generated in the control room The VHB valves cannot be stroked while in bypass mode due to the large pressure differential over the plugs as the actuator has insufficient force.
