What Affects Standard Deviation?
Objective
In this activity, you’ll get a little practice finding the standard deviation of a data set. You will
also see how changes in the data set affect the value of the mean and the standard deviation.
Data Set A: 1 2 4 6 8 10 11
1. Find the mean and standard deviation of Data Set A. Show your work clearly on a
separate sheet. Use the reference sheet Computing Standard Deviation to help you.
2. Now you will create Data Set B by taking each of the numbers in Data Set A and
increasing it by a certain amount. Each group member will use a different increase:
,add 2 to each value ,add 4 to each value
;add 8 to each value ,add 25 to each value
3. Find the mean and standard deviation of Data Set B. How does the mean change? How
does the standard deviation change? Ask around your group to find out what happened.
4. Make a general statement about what happens to the mean and the standard deviation of a
data set when you add a certain amount to each value in the data set. Then explain why
that happens. We will be doing class presentations on this activity.
5. Now you will create Data Set C by taking each of the numbers in Data Set A and
multiplying it by a certain ratio:
,multiply each value by 2 ,multiply each value by 4
;multiply each value by 8 ,multiply each value by 25
As before, ask around your group to find out what happened to the mean and standard 6.
deviation of the data set as a result of the multiplication. Discuss why multiplication
seems to have a different effect than adding.
7. Now you will create Data Set D with any numbers that you want to use. You can put as
many different values into the set as you would like. Design the set so that:
, it has a larger range than Data Set A
, it has a smaller standard deviation than Data Set A

8. Now you will create Data Set E with a new set of numbers (as many as you like). Design
the set so that:
, it has a smaller range than Data Set A
, it has a larger standard deviation than Data Set A
9. I am guessing that your Data Set E (from problem #8) contains more values than your
Data Set A. Would it be possible to solve problem #8 using only seven values? If so, do
it. If not, explain why it is not possible.
Next create Data Set F so that: 10.
, it contains 4 values
it has a mean of 6 ,
, it has a standard deviation of 1
This problem is challenging and should be done in discussion with your group. It may
help you to set up a table for computing standard deviation, even if most of the table is
blank at first. Enter things in the table that you know for sure have to be there. Then
play around a little trying to find numbers that will make the situation work.
11. Create Data Set G so that:
, it contains 4 values
, it has a mean of 10
, it has a standard deviation of 1
You should be able to modify Data Set F in order to produce Data Set G. Refer back to
things that you learned on the front of the sheet.
12. Create Data Set H so that:
, it contains 4 values
, it has a mean of 7
, it has a standard deviation of 2
You should be able to modify Data Set F in order to produce Data Set H. Refer back to
things that you learned on the front of the sheet.
13. I specified in the previous three problems that the data set should contain 4 values. But
suppose I said it should contain five values. That seems innocent enough, right? No big
deal to add one more value. Try it. What happens? Does this mean that the problem
can’t be solved with five values? Or can it be solved if you use a different approach?
