However, in primitive societies a system of barter was used. Barter was a system of direct exchange of goods. Somebody could exchange a sheep, for example, for anything in the market place that he or she considered to be of equal value. Barter, however, was a very unsatisfactory system of exchange, and various money systems developed based on goods that the members of a society recognized as having value. Cattle, grain, teeth, shells, salt, and tobacco had all been used. Precious metals gradually took over because, when made into coins, they were portable, durable, recognizable, and divisible into larger and smaller units of value. A coin is a piece of metal, usually disc-shaped, which bears lettering, designs or numbers showing its value. Until the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, coins were given monetary worth based on the exact amount of metal contained in them, but most modern coins are based on face value –the value that the governments choose to give them, which doesn’t show the actual metal content. Coins have been made of gold, silver, copper, plastic and in China even from tealeaves. Most governments now issue paper money in the form of bills, which are really “promises to pay.” Paper money is obviously easier to handle and much more convenient in the modern world. Checks and credit cards are being used increasingly, and it is possible to imagine a would where “money” in the form of coins and paper currency will no longer be used. Even today, in the United States, many places, especially filling stations will not accept cash at night for security reasons. (  ) 56. “Barter”(in Line 2,Paragraph 1) here means _______. These are the concepts (思想)the lecturer wants the students to remember. Often the lecturer has a general idea that serves as an “umbrella” covering the other main concepts. The students’ job, then, is to pick out the main concepts, including the “umbrella” ideal. Lecturers usually begin with an introduction. Sometimes the main concepts and the “umbrella” idea are briefly presented in the introduction; often they are not. Next comes the body of the lecture. It is here that the several main concepts are always presented. The final part of a lecture, the conclusion, is traditionally a summary of the main concepts. This is also the place where the “umbrella” idea can most easily be repeated, restated, restated, or even introduced for the first time. When a lecture is well organized, with a clear-cut beginning, middle and end, the main ideas are usually easy to pock out. When a lecture is not well organized, getting the gist of what is being said is quite difficult. Some lecturers are “long-winded”, taking a long time to come to the point. Others ramble on (杂乱地漫谈)and never seem to come to the point at all. 61. While listening to a lecture, the students are expected to remember________. 62. Specialists in marketing have studied how to make people buy more food in a supermarket. They do all kinds of things that you do not even notice. For example, the simple, ordinary food that everybody must buy like bread, milk, flour, and vegetable oil, is spread all over the store. You have to walk by all the more interesting—and more expensive—things in order to find what you need. The more expensive food is in packages with bright colored pictures. This food is places at eye level so you see it and want to buy it. The things that you have to buy anyway are usually located on a higher or lower shelf. However, candy and other things that children like are on lower shelves. One study showed that when a supermarket moves four products form floor to eye level, it sold 78 percent more. Another study showed that for every minute a person is in a supermarket after the first half hour, she or he spends $50.If someone stays forty minutes, the supermarket has an additional $5.00.So the store has a comfortable temperature in summer and winter, and it plays soft music. It is a pleasant place for people to stay—and spend more money. Some stores have red or pink lights over the meat so the meat looks redder. They put light green paper around lettuce (生菜) and put apples in red plastic bags. So be careful in the supermarket. You may go home with a bag of food you were not planning to buy. The supermarket, not you, decided you should buy it. (  ) 46. Three periods of development have been identified (确定), including early infancy(幼儿期), which extends from the first to the sixth month; middle infancy, from the sixth to the ninth month; and late infancy, from the ninth to the fifteenth month. Whereas the newborn is concerned with his or her inner world and reacts primarily to hunger and pain in early infancy, the baby is already aware of the surrounding world. During the second month, many infants are awake more and can raise their heads to look at things. They also begin to smile at people. By four months, the baby is searching for things but not yet grasping them with its hands. It is also beginning to be wary(谨慎的) of strangers and may scream when a visiting relative tries to pick it up. By five months, the baby is grabbing objects and putting them into its mouth. Some babies are trying to feed themselves with their hands. In middle infancy, the baby concentrates on practicing a great many speech sounds. It loves to imitate actions and examine interesting objects. At about seven months, it begins to crawl, a skill that it masters at the end of middle infancy. In late infancy, the baby takes an interest in games, songs, and even books. Progress toward walking moves through standing, balancing, bouncing in place, and walking with others. Over a period of more than 400 million years, they have evolved as the tallest, most massive , and longest-lived organisms ever to inhabit the earth .Yet trees lack a means of defense that almost every animal has: trees cannot move away from destructive forces. Because they cannot move, all types of living and nonliving enemies-fire, storms, microorganisms, insects, other animals and , later, humans—have wounded them throughout their history. Trees have survived because their evolution has made them into highly compartmented(分隔的) organisms; that is .they  wall off injured and infected wood . In that respect trees are radically different from animals. Fundamentally, animals heal, they preserve their life by making billions of repair, installing(安置) new cells or rejuvenated(恢复活力的)cells in the positions of old ones. Trees cannot heal; they make no repairs. Instead, they defend themselves from the consequences of injury and infection by walling off the damage, At the same time they put new cells in new positions; in effect, they grow a new tree over the old one every year. In the schools of Ancient Greece and Rome, testing usually consisted of saying poetry aloud or giving speeches.     In the European universities of the Middle Ages, students who were working for advanced degrees had to discuss questions in their field of study with people who had made a special study of the subject. This custom exists today as part of the process of testing candidates (考生) for the doctor’s degree.   Generally , however, modern examinations are written. A few things , but not really that many , are known about his Life. And yet around the comment is unanimous : he was the greatest writer who ever lived. His name was William Shakespeare. Shakespeare was born in 1564 in a little town called Stratford – upon-Avon. When he was in his twenties, he made his way to London. There he spent most of his working life. The theater was every popular at that time, and son Shakespeare was writing plays for them. (He also acted in some of the plays.)  In 1599 the company built the famous Globe Theater .There Shakespeare wrote and acted until he retired in about 1607.     Shakespeare wrote three kinds of plays: comedies, tragedies, and histories. Many of the comedies involved mistaken identities, women pretending to be men, and slapstick (滑稽剧)situations. One of his famous comedies is A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Shakespeare’s tragedies were often about a noble and honorable man who had one fault that helped bring about his downfall. Hamlet is an example. Shakespeare’s histories were usually about kings of England, such as Richard IIIor Henry V.     What made Shakespeare’s word so great? It was not necessarily his stories. Many were retellings of stories the audience already knew . But the way he told the stories was often remarkable. He understood the way people thought and acted, and he built this into his characters. Even though they were created 400 years ago, Shakespeare’s characters are believed today.     Shakespeare’s use of language – such as his beautiful descriptions and his clear, to – the – point statements – also made him great. Reading Comprehension (50 points) Task l (2 points each, 10 points in all)   Directions: After reading the following passage, you will find 5 questions or unfinished statements (No.46 through No. 50).  For each question or statement there are 4 choices.  You should make the correct choice and put the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.     Who takes care of the elderly in the United States today? The fact is that family members provide over 80% of the care that elderly people need. In most cases the elderly live in their own homes: A very small percentage of America’s elderly live in nursing homes.     Samuel Preston, a sociologist at the University of Pennsylvania, studied how the American family is changing. He reported that by the time the average American couple reaches about 40 years of age, their parents are usually still alive. The statistics show the change in lifestyles and responsibilities of aging (老龄化) Americans. The average middle-aged couple can look forward to caring for elderly parents sometime after their own children have grown up. Moreover, because people today live longer after an illness than people did years ago, family members must provide long-term care. These facts also mean that after caregivers provide for their elderly parents, who will eventually die, they will be old and may require care too. When they do, their spouses(配偶) will probably take care of them because they have had fewer children than their parents did.       Because Americans are living longer than ever, more social workers have begun to study ways of care-giving to improve the care of the elderly. They have found that all care-givers share a common characteristic: They believe that they are the best people for the job. The social workers have also discovered three basic reasons why the caregivers take on the responsibility of caring for an elderly, dependent relative. Many caregivers believe they had an obligation ( 职责 岗位职责下载项目部各岗位职责下载项目部各岗位职责下载建筑公司岗位职责下载社工督导职责.docx )  to help their relatives. Some think that helping others makes them feel more useful. Others hope that by helping someone now, they will deserve care when they become old and dependent. 46. Samuel Preston's study shows that     A. lifestyles and responsibilities of the elderly are not changing     B. most American couples over 40 have no living parents     C. middle-aged Americans have to take care of their children and parents at the same time     D. elderly people may need care for a long time because they live longer after an illness 47. Who will most probably take care of the middle-aged Americans when they need care themselves?     A. They themselves.                  B. Their close friends.     C. Their children.                    D. Their husbands or wives 48. All caregivers believe that they can     A. care for their elderly parents better than any other people     B. keeps closer to their old parents by this means     C. does much better if they have a job as social workers     D. improve the care of the elderly with the help of the social workers 49. Which of the following is NOT a reason why people look after their relatives?     A. They feel they are of use to other people.     B. They want to set an example to their children.     C. They think it is their duty to help their relatives.     D. They hope they deserve care when they need it. 50. What is the main idea of the passage?     A. Most old people live longer today after an illness than people did years ago.     B. Many old people are put into nursing homes by their families, who do not visit them regularly.     C. Most elderly people are taken care of by their families, who assume the responsibility for different reasons.     D. Most elderly people are satisfied with the better ways of care-giving that social workers have come up with. Task 2(2 points each, 10 points in all)     Directions: This task is the same as Task l( No.51 through No.55).     I once knew a young man, nineteen years of age, who lived with absolute outward(外表的)confidence and self-possession for a number of years before I discovered that he could not read or write. His various methods of trick, which were also skills of self-protection, were so skillful and so desperate(绝望)that neither I nor any of his other adult friends were aware of his entire helplessness in face of written words until we went to dinner one night at a local restaurant-and suddenly discovered that he could not read.       Even here, it was not the first time we went out to eat, but something like the second or third, that Peter's desperation shocked me. The first time, he was clever enough to cover the truth.  He studied the menu for a moment, then looked up to the waitress and asked her if he could have "just a coke and a hamburger". He told me later that he had done the same thing many times before and that he had learned to act as if he were examining the menu:" Then I ask for a coke and a hamburger ...Sometimes they give me a hamburger on a plate with salad and potatoes...Then I ask them for a roll and make my own hamburger. "       As we began to go out to eat more frequently, Peter would ask to go to Howard Johnson’s. I soon discovered  the  reason for his  choice: The  photographs,  attached  in  cellophane (玻璃纸)containers to each of the standard items on the menu, could help him not to struggle with the shape of words at all. Howard Johnson’s, whether intentionally or not, had provided the perfect escape for the endangered pride of an adult who was illiterate(文盲). 51. When he went to a restaurant, Peter would        .     A. pretend that he could not read or write     B. pretend to be studying the menu     C. be desperate for help from other people     D. protect himself by playing a musical instrument 52. The young man was not found to be illiterate until         .     A. he dined out with his adult friends at Howard Johnson's     B. he could no longer come up with various ways of deception     C. he had dinner with his friends at a certain local restaurant for the second or third time     D. he was not careful enough to be aware of his entire helplessness in face of written words 53. What did the young man usually have at a restaurant?     A. Standard items on the menu.            B. A hamburger made by himself.     C. Foods that other people ordered.        D. A coke and a hamburger. 54. The word" self-possession" (Para. 1) probably means     A. self-confidence                B. self-consciousness     C. self-discipline                D. self-devotion 55. Why did the young man like to go to Howard Johnson's?        :     A. Howard Johnson's provided a perfect escape when anything dangerous should happen     B. The menu at Howard Johnson's gave a clear introduction of the food it served.     C. The photographs attached to the main items on the menu helped conceal his illiteracy     D.  He would feel at ease because eaters at Howard Johnson's were all adult non-readers Task 3(3 points each, 15 points in all)   Directions:  This task is the same as Task l (No.56 through No. 60). After practicing as a surgeon for several years, Dr. Giroux decided to apply for membership in the American College of Surgeons(美国外科医生学会),a highly selective and distinguished(著名的)  professional organization.                                                              As part of the application procedure(手续) ,Dr. Ginoux was asked to prepare a list of all the operations performed in the previous seven years. Slowly, as she worked on the long list, she began to feel uncertain. She began to question some of her decisions. Had she used the best technique in that case? Maybe, in this case, she should have given one more test before operating? On the other hand, maybe she should have...Would the doctors on the selection committee understand that, as the only trained surgeon in the area, she usually could not get advice from others and therefore, had to rely completely on her own judgment?  For the first time, Dr. Cinoux felt lonely and isolated.       The longer Dr. Ginoux worked on the application forms, the more depressed she became. Or is intelligence developed by our environment and our experience? Strangely enough, the answer to these questions is yes. To some extent our intelligence is given to us at birth, and no amount of special education can make a genius out of a child born with low intelligence. On the other hand, a child who lives in a boring environment will develop his intelligence less than one who lives in rich and varied surroundings. Thus the limits of a person's intelligence are fixed at birth, whether or not he reaches those limits will depend on his environment. This view, now held by most experts, can be supported in a number of ways.       It is easy to show that intelligence is to some extent something we are born with. The closer the blood relationship between two people is, the closer they are likely to be in intelligence. Thus if we take two unrelated people at random from the population, it is likely that their degree of intelligence will be completely different. If, on the other hand, we take two identical twins, they will very likely be as intelligent as each other. Relations like brothers and sisters, parents and children, usually have similar intelligence, and this clearly suggests that intelligence depend on birth.       Imagine now that we take two identical twins and put them in different environments. We might send one, for example, t0 4 university and the other to a factory where the work is boring. We would soon find differences in their intelligence developing, and this indicates that environment as well as birth plays a part. This conclusion is also suggested by the fact that people who live in close contact with each other, but who are not related at all are likely to have similar degree of intelligence. 61.  If a child is born with low intelligence, he cans _        .     A. not reaches his intelligence in his life     B. goes beyond his intelligence limits in rich surroundings     C. still becomes a genius if he should be given special education        D. become a genius 62. The writer is in favor of the view that man's intelligence is given to him_        . My name is Kang Yan, and I'm a student at the college. I'd like to say something about the usage of mobile phones among college students.     Nowadays, more and more college students use mobile phones on college campus not for its convenience but for its fashion and popularity.  On the other hand, using mobile phones affects the normal teaching order to some extent. In the lecture, sometimes we hear the phone ring here and there, and some of the students send short messages now and then. As a result we couldn’t concentrate on our work.       People have different opinions about it.  I think it’s good to use the mobile phones, but the students shouldn't use it in the lecture. Finally, I hope you can pay attention to the phenomenon.                                                               Yours gratefully,                                                                       Kang Yan   2.                        Money     Some people claim that money is the only rule that measures a person. They would regard you as a successful man if you have a large sum of money. And they would even consider you a fool if you are penniless, or if you are against them.     Others try to prove that money is the source of all crimes. To illustrate, they say that a certain person needs money and he goes to steal or rob.  And they would often tell the story that a millionaire pays off some politicians so that he can do whatever he likes.    .       My attitude towards money is that we earn money to live, but not live-to earn money. No matter how much money we have, we should be always the master of it, but not the slave of it. 2007年安徽省普通高等学校专升本招生考试试题 英语 1. The word geography  37 _ from two Greek words, gee, the Greek word for” earth" and graphein,   38    means "to write.” The English word geography means "to describe the earth.” Some geography books focus on a small area like a town or city.  Others deal with a state, a region, a nation, or a   39  continent.  Many geography books deal with the whole earth. What do you think?" "I don't like it   “Why not?"   "I don’t know.  There’s just something about lie salesman that I don’t believe.     A few weeks after we had bought another car elsewhere, I happened to find out the history of the drop-head. It had been seriously damaged in a crash before we saw it, and cleverly done up. The car was, indeed, a very bad risk.     Of all the things about women that their husbands do not understand, perhaps the biggest question is this: How can she often be right about things of which she has absolutely no knowledge? How does a woman’s intuition work? What is this strange power that tells her exactly when her husband isn’t working late on business, however honest he pretends to be? Is it guesswork, or some sixth sense that men don't have? 46. When was the "first time" the husband felt "really shaken" by his wife's intuition?           A. When they bought another car.           B. When he learned about the history of the drop-head.           C. When he realized she knew so much about cars.           D. When his wife spoke about the salesman.       47. What does a person's intuition refer to according to this passage?           A. The ability to see through things.           B. Why didn't the man know that the car was damaged at first?           A. The damage was not serious at all.  B. He was not careful enough.     C. It had been skillfully repaired.  D. The salesman only tried it out smoothly. 49. What answer does the writer give to a woman's intuition?     A. It is simply a blind guess.    B. It is a special kind of knowledge.     C. It must be the sixth sense.      D. He doesn't really answer the question. 50. From the passage we learn that the salesman was A. cheating    B. honest          C. helpful    D.kind Task 2(2 points each, 10 points in all)         Directions:  This task is the same as Task l( No. 51  through No. 55).     Social customs and ways of behaving change.  Things which were considered impolite many years ago are now acceptable. Just a few years ago, it was considered impolite behavior for a man to smoke on the street. No man who thought of himself as being a gentleman would make a fool of himself by smoking when a lady was in a room.       Customs also differ from country to country. Does a man walk on the left or the right of a woman in your country? Or doesn’t it matter? Should you use both hands when you are eating? Should leave one in your lap or on the table?       The Americans and the British not only speak the same language but also share a large number of social customs. For example, in both America and England people shake hands when they meet each other for the first time. Also, most Englishmen will open a door for a woman or offer their seat to a woman, and so will most Americans. Promptness is important both in England and in America. That is, if a dinner invitation is for 7 0' clock, the dinner guest either arrives close to that time or calls up to explain his delay.     The important thing to remember about social customs is not to do anything that might make other people feel uncomfortable-especially if they are your guests. When the food was served, one of the guests started to eat his peas with a knife. The other guests were amused or shocked, but the host calmly picked up his knife and began eating in the same way. It would have been bad manners to make his guest feel foolish or uncomfortable. 51.  If one has accepted a dinner invitation, what should he do if he is to be late for the dinner?         A. He should find an excuse.           B. He should ask for excuse.         C. He should say sorry.           D. He should telephone to explain his being late. 52.  "It would have been bad manners to make his guests feel foolish or uncomfortable. " "Bad manners       .   A. ugly        B. dishonest        C. impolite        D. shameful 53. Which of the following do you think is the best title for this passage?     A. Social Customs                      B. Social Life      C. American and British Customs          D. Promptness Is Important 54. Yours faithfully, Wang Hua 2                    Global Shortage of Water       People always think that water is an inexhaustible resource that will never be used up. There is plenty of water, such as rain, water from wells and rivers etc. It seems as if water is always available around us and there is no need worrying about water shortage. But things are usually different from what we think. As is depicted in the picture, in 1950s, a crowd of children were boating and playing on the river, while 50 years later, what the children saw were dry river and deserted boats.       As a matter of fact, water resource is rather limited. With the rapid growth of population and development of industries, water is more needed than before.  What’s more, a large quantity of water has been wasted and polluted every day. Some places in China are now facing serious shortage of water.  For instance, in a town in northwest China, a child’s daily drinking water is only a bottle.     Facing the shortage of water, what should we do then? Firstly, I think, we should make everybody be aware of the water shortage situation so that we may save water in daily life.  Secondly, certain law should be made to prevent water pollution.  In this way, I' m sure our country will not be thirsty for water in future.
