nullCharles Dickens(1812-1870)Charles Dickens(1812-1870)A Critical Realist nullAt the age of 10, Charles Dickens was forced to leave school to work. The early hardship and suffering inflicted upon the sensitive young Charles had left an everlasting bitter remembrance in his later life. The early years of his life not only provided material for much of his writing but also shaped his personality. nullThe family was poor, and his parents did not provide him with schooling, so he got most of his elementary education by precocious reading of novels. When he was 12, his father was sent to prison for debt, and as a customary of the day, the whole family lived in prison. LifeLife Charles was considered old enough to earn money by working, his work was hard and his conditions harsh. This early experience left an ineradicable impression on his mind and scenes of filthy working conditions appear repeatedly in his novels. nullHis father inherited some money at his grandmother’s death, and was released from prison. Charles was sent to a cheap school, where he remained for 3 years, then he became an office boy in a legal firm. WorksWorksDuring this time he came to know the facts about crime and the injustice of the legal system. Then he learned shorthand, and finally became a newspaper reporter. In 1837, the publication of The Posthumous Papers of Pickwick Club lifted him into a position of fame and fortune.nullDickens is one of the greatest critical realist writers of the Victorian Age. It is his serious intention to expose and criticize in his works all the property, injustice, hypocrisy and corruptness he sees all around him. But his social attitudes are very complicated. nullHe hates the state apparatus, especially the Parliament, but as a bourgeois writer, he can in no way supply any fundamental solution to the social plights. nullThe best he can do seems to try to retain an optimism with wishful thinking, as in his early works, or to express a helpless indignant protest, as in his later novels.nullDickens’ works are also characterized by a mingling of humor and pathos. He seems to believe that life is itself a mixture of joy and grief. Life is delightful because it is at once comic and tragic.nullDickens’ novels cover a wide range: social, moral, emotional, and psychological. The geniality and unequaled comedy of the novels are related to the suffering, errors, and personal trials of their author and to his concern both for social evils and for the perennial griefs and limitations of humanity.nullPickwick Papers Oliver Twist The Old Curiosity Shop A Christmas Carol David Copperfield Bleak House Hard TimesnullA Tale of Two Cities Great Expectation Our Mutual Friend
