Choose the best word or phrase for each numbered blank and mark A, B, Cot Don ANSWER SHEET 1. As my wife greeted me one evening, her voice came through the door, "Guess what?"    I always take a deep  (1)   on this very leading question. "What?" I asked.    "I just won a sales contest at work and the  (2)   is dinner for two at the new fancy restaurant down by the river-front !"    She was so  (3)  . We knew the restaurant was extremely good. "See? I told you there would be a  (4)   for me to wear my new spring outfit," she shyly reminded me.    "  (5)   can play at that game," I responded, "I will wear my gray suit, my Borsalino-imported straw hat and a new silk tie. sigh叹息(一般与breathe、give连用);breath呼吸(一般与take、hold、have等连用);surprise惊讶(一般与give连用);thought想法(一般与have连用)。 A Two B Four C Everyone D Nobody 【正确答案】:D 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 考查上下文理解。 be well mannered有礼貌的(多拼作be well-mannered);be well built建筑得很好的;be well dressed穿戴得体的;be well fed喂养得很好的,吃得好的(多拼作be well-fed)。 第7题 A spring B summer C autumn D winter 【正确答案】:A 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 考查名涮与上下文理解。由前文妻子话中的wear my new spring outfit可知应当选spring。 A turned out B worked out C came out D figured out 【正确答案】:A 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 考查固定搭配。turn out最终是,最后是;work out制定,算出;come out出来,泄露;figure out想出,理解。 A almost B surely C never D seldom 【正确答案】:C 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 考查副词与上下文理解。 A found B saw C took D slowed 【正确答案】:A 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 考查动词用法。 run down跑下,撞死,(使)停下;hang down垂下;look down向下看,瞧不起;fall down落下。 第20题 A napkin B tablecloth C cup D fork 【正确答案】:A 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 考查上下文理解。由前面的修饰语bright red、前文描述餐巾时的bright colored napkins及空格后的from the restaurant不难推知应选[A]。 二、Reading Comprehension(共10小题,共20.0分)Read the following three texts.Answer the questions on each text by choosing A, B, C or D. 第1题 Obviously television has both advantages and disadvantages.    In the first place, television is not only a convenient source of entertainment, but also a comparatively cheap one. With a TV set in the family people don't have to pay for expensive seats at the theatre, the cinema, or the opera. All they have to so is to push a button or turn a knob, and they can see plays, films, operas and shows of every kind. Some people, however, think that this is where the danger lies. The television viewers need do nothing. He does not even have to use his legs if he has a remote control. He makes no choice and exercises, no judgment. He is completely passive and has everything presented to him without any effort on his part.    Television, it is often said, keeps one informed about current events and the latest developments in science and politics. The most distant countries and the strangest customs are brought right into one's sitting room. It could be argued that the radio performs this service as well; but on television everything is much more living, much more real. Yet here again there is a danger. The television screen itself has a terrible, almost physical charm for us. We get so used to looking at the movements on it, so dependent on its pictures, that it begins to control our lives. People are often heard to say that their television sets have broken down and that they have suddenly found that they have far more time to do things and that they have actually begun to talk to each other again. It makes one think, doesn't it?    There are many other arguments for and against television. We must realize that television itself is neither good nor bad. It is the uses that it is put to that determine its value to society. What is the major function of paragraph 1? A To arouse the reader's concern. B To introduce the theme of the whole passage. C To summarize the whole passage. D To state the primary uses of TV. Obviously television has both advantages and disadvantages(显然,电视既有优点又有缺点)。 Television, as a source of entertainment, is ______. A not very convenient B very expensive C quite dangerous D relatively cheap 【正确答案】:D 【本题分数】:2.0分 【答案解析】 细节题。 In the first place,...but also a comparatively cheap one(首先,电视…… Why are some people against TV? A Because TV programs are not interesting. B Because TV viewers are totally passive. C Because TV prices are very high. D Because TV has both advantages and disadvantages. Some people...think that this is where the danger lies(有些人认为这正是电视的危险所在),然后分析了他们这样认为的原因:The television viewers need do nothing...without any effort on his part。 One of the most obvious advantages of TV is that ______. A it keeps us informed B it is very cheap C it enables us to have a rest D it controls our lives 【正确答案】:A 【本题分数】:2.0分 【答案解析】 细节题。 Television...keeps one informed about current events and the latest developments in science and politics(电视使人们了解时事以及科学和政治领域里的最新发展),因此就是本题答案。 According to the passage, whether TV is good or not depends on ______. A its quality B people's attitude towards it C how we use it D when we use it 【正确答案】:C 【本题分数】:2.0分 【答案解析】 细节题。 It is the uses that is put to that determine its value to society(是电视的用途决定着它对社会的价值),因此[C]项就是本题正确答案。 It is the uses that determine...,而that is put to则是uses的一个定语从句。the uses that is put to相当于选项中的how to use it。 Cars account for half the oil consumed in the US, about half the urban pollution and one-fourth the greenhouse gases. They take a similar oil of resources in other industrial nations and in the cities of the developing world. As vehicle use continues to increase in the coming decade, the US and other countries will have to deal with these issues or else face unacceptable economic, health-related and political costs. It is unlikely that oil prices will remain at their current low level or that other nations will accept a large and growing US contribution to global climatic change.    Policymakers and industry have four options: reduce vehicle use, increase the efficiency and reduce the emissions of conventional gasoline-powered vehicles, switch to less harmful fuels, or find less polluting driving systems. The last of these — in particular the introduction of vehicles powered by electricity — is ultimately the only sustainable option. The other alternatives are attractive in theory but in practice are either impractical or offer only marginal improvements. For example, reduced vehicle use could solve traffic problems and a host of social and environmental problems, but evidence from around the world suggests that it is very difficult to make people give up their cars to any significant extent. In the US, mass transit ridership and carpooling have declined since World War II. Even in western Europe, with fuel prices averaging more than $1 a liter (about $4 a gallon) and with easily accessible mass transit and dense populations, cars still account for 80 percent of all passenger travel.    Improved energy efficiency is also appealing, but automotive fuel economy has barely made any progress in 10 years. Alternative fuels such as natural gas, burned in internal-combustion engines, could be introduced at relatively low cost, but they would lead to only marginal reductions in pollution and greenhouse emissions (especially because oil companies are already spending billions of dollars every year to develop less polluting types of gasoline). From the passage we know that the increased use of cars will ______. A consume half of the oil produced in the world B have serious consequences for the well-being of all nations C widen the gap between the developed and developing countries D impose an intolerable economic burden on residents of large cities 【正确答案】:B 【本题分数】:2.0分 【答案解析】 分析推理题。 As vehicle use continues...and political costs,其中的these issues指的就是第一句中所说的燃油、城市污染和温室气体等问题,因此综合起来就是[B]的意思。 The US has to deal with the problems arising from vehicle use because ______. A most Americans are reluctant to switch to public transportation systems B the present level of oil prices is considered unacceptable C other countries will protest its increasing greenhouse emissions D it should take a lead in conserving natural resources 【正确答案】:C 【本题分数】:2.0分 【答案解析】 细节题。 It is unlikely...that other nations will accept a large and growing US contribution to global climatic change,即别的国家不会同意让美国对全球气候变化的影响越来越大,与[C]一致。 Which of the following is the best solution to the problems mentioned in the passage? A The designing of highly efficient car engines. B A reduction of vehicle use in cities. C The development of electric cars. D The use of less polluting fuels. The last of these...is ultimately the only sustainable option(最后一种——尤其是引入电动汽车——才是最终唯一可持续的选择),因此本题选[C]。 Which of the following is practical but only makes a marginal contribution to solving the problem of greenhouse emissions? A The use of fuels other than gasoline. B Improved energy efficiency. C The introduction of less polluting driving systems. D Reducing car use by carpooling. 选[A]。 Which of the following statements is true according to the passage? A The decline of public transportation accounts for increased car use in western Europe. B Cars are popular in western Europe even though fuel prices are fairly high. C The reduction of vehicle use is the only sustainable option in densely populated western Europe. D Western European oil companies cannot sustain the cost of developing new-type fuels. You should write your responses to both Part A and Part B of this section on ANSWER SHEET 2. Write a letter to a publishing house asking for information on a book about American culture. Your letter should include:    (1) the name of the book;    (2) the price of the book;    (3) the discount of group order.    You should write approximately 100 words. Do not sign your own name at the end of the letter. Use "Li Ping" instead. You do not need to write the address. Dear Sir(s),    I am a university student majoring in English. We are going to have a course about American culture next term. My professor recommended a book called Essential to the American Culture to us, which is said to have been published last month and is selling well. So I want to ask some information about it. Could you tell me the price of the book plus the postage and packing? What's more, I wonder if there is a discount if I make a group order of 30 for my class. Your reply will be appreciated. Thank you! Study the following graph carefully and write an essay on the topic Private Car Ownership in China Increased Rapidly. You should:    (1) describe the graph;    (2) account for the implied meaning; and    (3) state your view.    You should write about 120 words and make full reference to the graph. Private Car Ownership in China Increased Rapidly    As is shown in the graph, the number of private car ownership in China increased approximately six times from more than 2 million in 1,994 to over 13 million in 2004,which is a blessing as well as a curse.    To begin with, the graph implies that China has been developing rapidly since 1990s and Chinese have become more wealthy.  But it also means a heavy burden on our urban traffic because those increased cars demand more roads and more efficient administration. In addition, it means more problems to the quality of our urban living: more waste gas discharge, noise and fatalities in traffic accidents. The rapid increase of private cars also poses a great challenge to our energy section, especially when energy is in short supply all over the world and the oil price keeps climbing.    In my view, measures should be taken to control the rapid growth of private cars. Firstly, we should popularize private cars. Secondly, public transportation should be given priority. Only in these ways can we enjoy the convenience brought about by modern civilization. Today let's talk about study performance. Perhaps you are an average student with average intelligence that you will never become a top student. This is not necessarily the case, however. In my opinion, our concentration on studies is of most importance to us. Concentrating on our studies, everyone is likely to be a top student without additional work. Now it's for each of you to discuss how we manage it.    Carol:    From my personal experience, the planning of time is of the greatest importance. We must make a list of our weekly tasks. Then make a schedule or chart of the time. Fill in committed time such as eating, sleeping, meetings, classes, etc. Then decide on good, regular times for studying. Good planning will make you more aware of how you spend your time. Furthermore, it will enable you to plan your activities so that you have adequate time for both work and play.    Siemon:    As to me, it is important to develop a good attitude about tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. So don't worry excessively about a single test. Tests provide grades, but they also let us know that we need to spend more time studying,  and they help make our new knowledge permanent.    Laura:    I do think that study place is critical in our study. A good study area is supposed to improve our study efficiency. It may be a desk or a chair at home or in the school library, but it should be comfortable, and it should not have distractions. When you begin to work, you should be able to concentrate on the subject.    Davis:    I think regularity matters a lot. In class, we should listen carefully to what the teacher says, go over the notes as soon as possible after class and review important points mentioned in class as well as those we remain confused about. This will help us understand the class better. If we review the notes and textbook regularly, the material will become more meaningful and you will remember it longer.  Statements [A] To ensure your study efficiency, you should choose a good study area. [B] If you set your mind on your studies, you'll become a top one. [C] Regularity plays nothing more than anything in studies. [D] Regularity plays an critical role in our studies. [E] Your school performance depends on your study habits. [F] We should develop a good attitude towards tests. [G] It's important to have a good planning of our school time. Concentrating on our studies, everyone is likely to be a top student without additional work,即如果将精力集中在学习上,每个人都有可能成为成绩最好的学生,这与[B]一致。 就本题来说,Carol的第一句话中提到:the planning of time is of the greatest importance,表明她强调的是对学习时间的计划,选项中只有[G]提到了planning一词,因此是正确答案。 第3题 Siemon 【正确答案】: [F] [本题分数]: 1.0 分 【答案解析】 Siemon的第一句话指出,他认为培养对待考试的正确态度很重要:it is important to develop a good attitude about tests,然后对自己的观点进行了阐述。 I do think that study place is critical in our study,然后指出好的学习场所有利于提高学习效率,选项[A]与此相符。 五、Listening Comprehension(共25小题,共25.0分) 第1题 How will the man get to San Francisco? A By plane. B By bus. C By car. D By train. 【正确答案】:B 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 [听力原文] W: You're going to San Francisco tomorrow, aren't you? M: Yes, I thought I'd fly, but then I decided that taking a bus would be cheaper than driving or flying. I decided (that) taking a bus一处即可作答,flying和driving都属于干扰信息。 Where was the man when the woman called him? A He was on his way to where they should meet. B He was at home. C He was in his office. D He was at the main entrance. What happened to you? I've been waiting for twenty minutes. M: Oh, I completely forgot about our meeting. I'm on my way. Please wait for me. W: OK. I'll wait for you at the main entrance. I'm on my way(我正在路上)一处。 What is the price of one watch? A 10 dollars. B 5 dollars. C 9 dollars. D 18 dollars. 【正确答案】:B 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 [听力原文] M: How much is this electronic watch, please? W: Five dollars each and nine dollars for two. M: OK, I'll take one. Five dollars each and nine dollars for two并记下价格与商品的对应关系,然后将其与题目对照就可选出正确答案。 What does the man suggest? A Touring the city on a fine day. B Visiting the city with a group. C Spending more time on sightseeing. D Taking himself with her on the tour. 【正确答案】:C 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 [听力原文] W: I think I'll take the half-day tour of the city. M: Why not the whole day? W: I'd like to, but there are so many things I have to do in the afternoon. What does the woman imply? A She doesn't want to take the trouble to read the article. B She would like to have a copy of the article. C She has given the man much trouble. D She is not interested in the article. 【正确答案】:B 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 [听力原文] M: Would you like to have a copy of Dr Smith's article? W: Thanks, if it's not too much trouble. How is the man today? A He's better. B He's sick in bed. C He's feeling worse. D He has recovered. 【正确答案】:A 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 [听力原文] W: I heard you caught a cold. How are you feeling today? M: I can't complain. At least I'm out of bed. W: Take it easy. You should drink more water or milk. What does the man mean? A He needs another job as research assistant. B He asked Professor Williams for assistance. C He assists Professor Williams with his teaching. D He is doing research with Professor Williams. 【正确答案】:C 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 [听力原文] W: John, are you doing research for Professor Williams this semester? M: Actually, I am working as his teaching assistant. W: You are lucky. It's a position where you can learn much from the professor.    本题仍是要听清男士的话,[C]中的assists Professor Williams with his teaching就是对男士回答中working as his teaching assistant的同义重述。 What was the woman probably trying to do? A Play a tape recorder. B Take a picture. C Repair a typewriter. D Start a car. 【正确答案】:A 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 [听力原文] M: Did you check the power plug and press the play button? W: Yes. The power indicator was on, and it was running, but somehow the sound didn't come through. M: Take the tape out and try once again. Maybe you should check the output plug.    本题的关键词是the power plug(电源插座)、the play button(播放按钮)、the power indicator(电源指示灯)及sound(声音)。 Why can't Professor Hill answer her questions now? A He doesn't have time. B It's not his office hour. C He is too tired after class. D He will only be available in the afternoon. 【正确答案】:A 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 [听力原文] W: Excuse me, Professor Hill, may I ask you a few questions? M: Yes, of course. But I'm sorry I have a class to attend. Why don't you come in my office hours, that's 4 to 5 p. m, Monday, Thursday and Friday? What can we conclude about the train from the conversation? A The train is crowded. B The train is late. C The train is empty. D The train is on time. The train is somewhat behind. Take a seat, and I'll tell you as soon as we know something definite. M: Thank you. I'll just sit here and read a magazine in the meantime. The train is somewhat behind,即火车晚点了。 What do Tom and Jane mainly discuss? A Tom's test. B Jane's research paper. C Go swimming at the Student Center. D Plans for the evening. 【正确答案】:D 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 [听力原文] 11-13 M: Jane, let's go swimming at the Student Center. W: I'd like to, Tom, but I have a paper due on Friday, and I haven't even started it yet. M: Just an hour. I've got a test tomorrow, so I won't be able to stay very long. W: I need the exercise, but I just can't spare the time. M: Okay, how about dinner at the Grill? You have to eat something, and it's right by the library. I'll go over there with you after dinner, and you can do your research while I study for my test. W: Well, but... M: Come on. You'll probably want to stay late, and you shouldn't walk home after dark. I'll stay until you're ready to go. W: That would be nice, but... M: Look, we really wouldn't be wasting any time. We'd just be doing everything we need to do, but we'd be doing it together. I just want to spend time with you. W: Me, too. Okay. I need to go home first, then I'll meet you at the Grill about six. Is that all right? M: That's great. We'll get everything done. You'll see. 由其中的go swimming、dinner、do your research、be doing it together等关键词可以看出,他们讨论的是晚上的活动,因此答案为[D]。 What does Tom suggest that they do after dinner? A They will go to the Grill. B They will go to the library. C They will go swimming. D They will walk home. I'll go over there with you after dinner,因此答案是[B]。 What does we learn about Tom? A He is not a student. B He is not a serious student. C He is not very concerned about Jane. D He is willing to compromise. With whom is the man speaking? A His academic advisor. B Another student. C A ski instructor. D The college dean. 【正确答案】:B 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 [听力原文] 14-17 M: Have you made any plans to go away during semester break? I've been thinking of skiing. W: I really haven't had time to think about my vacation. I've been concentrating on getting ready for my exams, especially philosophy. But I'll probably go to the beach. M: Why the beach? W: Well, it would be nice to get away from this cold weather and just lie in the sun and relax after working so hard. M: It's true that skiing does require work. And you have to get up early and wait in long lines for the chair lifts. Thanks. I think you help me make up my mind. W: Sure. Now maybe you can use your mind to think about something else, like your studies. M: Yeah, just as you said, I should focus more on study now, because the exams of various courses are approaching. If I cannot pass those exams smoothly, I will not have a good time in vacation. W: Absolutely! So now we should put the vacation aside temporarily and make good preparation for the exams. Do you want to go to the library with me now? M: Sure! Let's go! What has the woman mainly been thinking about? A The weather. B A vacation. C Going skiing. D Her studies. I've been concentrating on...philosophy。 Where will the woman probably spend her vacation time? A At the beach. B At her job. C At a ski resort. D At the school library. But I'll probably go to the beach,因此选[A]。 What does the woman think the man should do? A Take a trip to the beach. B Go to a ski resort. C Study for his exams. D Think further about his vacation. Who is Smith speaking to? A The staff. B Professional journalists. C The faculty. D A group of students. As the editor of The Voice, I'd like to introduce you to our campus daily. We need volunteers to assist us in keeping the student body informed through our newspaper. Experience isn't absolutely necessary, but writing and typing skills are in great demand. We need people to rewrite articles, type, and proof-read. We could also use a good photographer.  Although many of our staff members are journalism majors, we also have several engineers and a pre-law student working for us. Since The Voice comes out five days a week, we need excellent students who know how to budget their time efficiently. Good grades are a prerequisite for working on the paper. There is some money for salaries depending on how involved you get with the paper, but don't expect to get rich. This isn't something you do for the money. Mostly it's just for fun. Anyone who is interested in joining the staff should speak to me immediately after this meeting. Be prepared to start right away. The first issue goes to press tomorrow. How many days a week is The Voice printed? A One. B Two. C Five. D Seven. The Voice comes out five days a week...,其中的come out就是题目中的be printed。 What is most likely the best reason for joining the staff? A To make lots of money. B To learn to type. C To become a better student. D To get experience in journalism. When should volunteers expect to begin working? A Immediately. B Tomorrow. C In a couple of days. D In six days. Be prepared to start right way,其中的right away就是选项[A]的immediately。 How do the Americans think of the taxi? A It's a useful means of travelling. B It benefits a lot to all Americans. C It's hard to find all the time. D It is a luxury and Americans seldom take it. 【正确答案】:D 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 [听力原文] 22-25    Today I'd like to say something about taxis. I think it's beneficial to all new-comers. Most people are likely to travel by taxi when they arrive in America. Actually, taxis here come under the heading of luxury travel. In Chicago, for example, the meter reads almost $1.00 before you even move! Furthermore, they're sometimes not only hard to find at the busy hours of a day but also if the weather turns bad.    Generally speaking, taxis are metered throughout the country, but there are some cities, for example, Washington D. C, where they operate on a distant zone system.    If you find yourself sharing a cab with several strangers, you will often be expected to pay full price, unfair though that may seem. Nothing is uniform in the US. Furthermore, rules vary from one city to another.    If you want to make a complaint about taxi service, note the driver's number and name. When you write to the company, be sure to keep a copy of your letter. How much would you pay if you shared a taxi with a stranger? A The full price. B Two thirds of its price. C The half price. D A third of its price. 【正确答案】:A 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 独白倒数第四句指出:尽管看起来不合理,但与陌生人合坐一辆出租车时,you will often be expected to pay full price(常常要付全额费用),选[A]。 When are taxis difficult to call? A In the evening. B In rush hours. C In the suburbs. D In crowded cities. 其中的the busy hours就是[B]项中的rush hours。 What can you do if you are not satisfied with its service? A You can refuse to pay the money. B You can accuse the taxi driver later. C You can make a complaint to others. D You can do nothing to them in USA.
