ORDERING FOOD IN A RESTAURANT
Example 1.
When First sitting Down
Waiter: Welcome to Dan’s, my name is Wendy and I will be your server today. May I get anyone something to Drink?
Customer 1: Do you have hot Tea?
Waiter: Yes we do, would you like cream and sugar with your tea?
Customer 1: Yes please.
Customer 2: I would like a Coke Please. (NOTE: COKE is a Brand name)
Waiter: We only carry Pepsi, is that ok for you? (Pepsi is almost the same as COKE)
Customer 2: OK, that will be fine, thank you
Waiter: Ok, I will be right back with your drinks and to take your food order.
Ordering Food
Example 2:
Waiter: Here are your drinks, have you guys decided on your meals or do you need a few more minutes?
Customer 1: We are ready. I would like a Hamburger with French Fries, Please.
Waiter: Ok and how would you like that cooked?
In the U.S.A. when ordering any food that is Beef, the waiter will always ask how you want your beef cooked. Here are the choices:
1. Rare. Rare beef is very quickly cooked. The middle of
your hamburger will be red and barely cooked.
2. Medium. The beef is pink in the middle, but the juices of
the meat are clear
3. Well Done. The beef is totally cooked through with no
pink color.
Customer 1: Well done please.
Waiter: Sure, no problem. And for you, sir?
Customer 2: I would like the Cheese Burger.
Waiter: Ok and how would you like that cooked?
Customer 2: Medium, please.
Waiter: Ok, and what kind of Cheese would you like?
Customer 2: Cheddar Cheese please.
Waiter: Sure, no problem. I will be back with your meals as soon as they are ready.
Other NOTES:
Depending on the Restaurant, when you order a burger or sandwich, you will also have your choice of what’s called a SIDE.
A SIDE is something that goes along with your main meal. For example: French Fries, Potato Chips, or A small Salad.
Usually the waiter will ask you in this way.
Waiter: Ok, one Cheese burger with Cheddar cheese, and would you like Fries or potato Chips with that?
Also, when ordering a Burger or sandwich you can tell the waiter exactly what you want on it.
Most Burgers have your Choice of the following:
Onions
Lettuce
Tomatoes
Pickles (In the U.S.A. pickles are sour)
You can also tell your waiter what CONDIMENT you want to add or remove from your burger or Sandwich.
A CONDIMENT is a sauce that is spread onto the Bread of your Sandwich or Burger.
Common CONDIMENTS are:
Mayonnaise. A white spread that is has a slight lemony flavor.
Mustard. Yellow Spread that is tangy and sometimes can be spicy
Ketchup. Red, tangy and a little sweet.
Here is an Example dialog for ordering a Cheese Burger.
Customer 1: I would like a Cheese burger with Cheddar cheese, medium. Can I have only Onions, pickles and mustard on that please?
Waiter: Sure no problem.
Or, if you like everything on your burger you can use the following term.
The WORKS.
The WORKS means you would like everything on the Burger that the menu is offering. It is much easier to say the WORKS than to say each item one at a time.
You can also say the following:
Customer 1: I would like the burger with EVERYTHING please.
EVERYTHING in this context means all things that are offered for that burger.
