典范英语2up打印版,打印前请将版面分页设置为“2up”,即可在一张A4纸上打印两页。ArcticHero---theStoryofMatthewHensonByAlisonHawesIntroductionIn1909ablackAmericanexplorercalledMatthewHensonhelpedtodiscovertheNorthPole.ThisstorytellsyouhowMatthewbecameanexplorerandthedangershefacedinthebittercoldoftheArctic.Chapter1:RunningAwayAsaboy,Matthewalwayslongedforadventure.Whenhewasabout12yearsold,heranawaytosea.Hejoinedashipasacabinboy,peelingpotatoesandcleaningthedecks.Whenheleft,attheageof18,hehadalreadytraveledtheworld.Chapter2:MatthewMeetsRobertPearyAfewyearslaterMatthewwasworkinginashopwhenhemetanexplorercalledRobertPeary.Robertofferedhimajob,ashisservant,workinginthejunglesofCentralAmerica.Matthewwaskeentotravelagain,sohetookthejob.Whiletheywereinthejungle,oneofRobert’ssurveyteamfellintosomequicksand.Themanwassofrightened,helefttheexpedition.Matthewaskedifhecouldtakeovertheman’sjob,andheneverworkedasaservantagain.Afterworkinginthestickyheatofthejungle,Robert’snexttripwastothebittercoldoftheArctic.HeaskedMatthewtocomewithhimasamemberofhisteam.HeandMatthewthenspentthenext18yearsexploringtheArctictogether.Chapter3:MatthewinGreenlandTheybeganbymakingseveraltripstoGreenland,wheretheInuitpeoplehelpedthemtolearntheskillstheyneededtosurviveintheArctic.MatthewquicklylearnedtospeakInuitandbecamegoodfriendswiththepeople.Theycalledhim“Matthew-the-kind-one”.Theylearnedhowtofishforcharrandhuntforseals.Theylearnedtobuildigloosandmakeclothesandbootsfromanimalskins.Theyalsolearnedtobuildsledgesanddriveteamsofhuskydogs.Infact,Matthewsoonbecameanexpertsledgedriver.MatthewandRoberttraveledacrosstheunexploredicefieldsinthenorthofGreenland.TheymademapsandhelpedtoshowthatGreenlandisanisland.Theyalsofoundthreeenormousmeteorites.ButevenwithhelpfromtheInuit,theArcticwasadangerousplaceforRobertandMatthewtobe.OncetheywereouthuntingwhenamuskoxsuddenlychargedatRobert.Justintime,MatthewsavedRobert’slife.Heshottheoxwithhislastbullet.Anothertimetheywerehundredsofmilesfromcampwhentheyranoutoffood.Theywerecoldandweak,andamantravelingwiththemwasdangerouslyill.Intheendtheyhadtoeattheirdogsorstarvetodeath.Chapter4:TotheNorthPoleDespitethedangers,RobertandMatthewbravelywentbacktotheArcticagain.Thistimetheywantedtodosomethingnoonehadeverdonebefore.TheywantedtotrytoreachtheNorthPole.ButontheirfirstattemptRobert’sfeetbecamebadlyfrostbitten.Robertwasinsuchpainthathecouldn’twalkorevenstand.Assoonastheycouldtravel,MatthewstrappedRoberttoasledgeandrushed250milestobasecamp,wheretherewasadoctor.ThedoctorhadtotakeoffeightofRobert’stoes.ButstillRobertandMatthewwouldnotgiveup.ThreemoretimestheytriedtoreachthePole.Eachtimetheygotcloserthanbefore.Buteachtimetheywerebeatenbackbyblizzardsormeltingice.Chapter5:OneLastChanceIn1908RobertandMatthewsailedfromNewYorktomaketheirfifthattempttoreachthePole.Buttheyagreed,becauseoftheirage,thattheywouldmakethistheirlasttriptotheArctic.ThiswouldbetheirlastchancetoreachtheNorthPole!Ontheirwaynorth,theystoppedinGreenlandtobuythehuskies,fursandequipmentthattheyneeded.TheyalsovisitedseveralvillagestohireInuitmenandwomentocomewiththemandhelpthemontheirlastjourney.Astheirshipsailedfurthernorth,theseabegantofreezeover.Atfirsttheshipwasabletocutthroughtheice,butastheicegotthickertheysometimeshadtousedynamitetohelpthembreakthrough.Intheendtheseaicewasjusttoothickandtheycouldgonofurther.SotheysetuptheirbasecamponanislandoffthecoastofCanada.TheyspentthewintergettingreadyfortheirlastattempttoreachthePole.Inthespringtheywerereadytosetout.Robertputthemenintoteamsandtheybegansettingupalineofcampsacrosstheseaice.Ateachcamptheyleftfood,equipmentandigloosforRobertandMatthewtouseontheirwaybackfromthePole.Butthiswasnoteasy.Timeandtimeagaintheywereheldupbytheiceandthebadweather.Attimestheicewassojaggeditbroketheirsledges.Othertimesitwassohighthattheyhadtodragtheirheavysledgesoveritbyhand.Theicecreakedandmoanedandcrackedopenwithoutwarning.OnceRobertwasgoingtosleepwhenheheardanoise.Lookingoutside,hesawacrackopenuparoundoneoftheotherigloos!HeandMatthewshoutedtothemenwhojusthadtimetoleaptosafety.Whentheywere130milesfromthePole,theysetuptheirlastcamp.Robertsentthelastsupportteambacktobasecamp,astheywerenolongerneeded.Then,withMatthewandfourInuitmen,hesetoffonthelastlegoftheirjourneytothePoleitself.Foroncetheicewassmoothandtheweathergood,andforthenextfewdaysthesixmenmadegoodspeed.But,justafewmilesfromthePole,Matthewsuddenlyfellthroughtheice.Luckilyoneofthemenwasclosebyandpulledhimoutbeforehedrowned.LaterthatdaythesixmenreachedthePole.Itwas6thApril1909.Afteryearsofhardwork,disappointmentsanddanger,RobertandMatthewhaddoneitatlast.TheywerethefirstpeopleevertostandattheNorthPole!Chapter6:BackHomeMatthewandRobertarrivedbackinNewYorkmonthslater,expectingtobetreatedasheroes.Butthiswasnottobe.Whiletheywereaway,amancalledFrederickCookhadclaimedtohavereachedtheNorthPolebeforethem!Intheend,Cook’sclaimwasshowntobeahoax.Robert,beingtheleaderoftheexpedition,wasrewardedwiththefameandmedalshedeserved.ButsadlyinAmericaatthattime,blackpeopleweregivenlittlerespect.So,atfirst,Matthewwasnotrewardedforhisparti
