They kiss (her first ever; probably his, too) & Haymitch III sends a pot of broth (message: one kiss = broth; more kisses/romance may = Chap. 19 medicine for Peeta’s blood infection). -Katniss goes hunting for food; Peeta’s condition worsens. She tells Peeta about how Chap. 20 she acquired Lady, Prim’s goat. Peeta tells her he owes his life to her for saving his, thinking that he has cost her the games & he intends on paying her back. -Claudius announces a feast with something each tribute needs. Katniss knows it will have medicine for Peeta. Peeta refuses to let her risk her life for him; Haymitch sends some sleeping syrup so Katniss can drug Peeta & she can go get the real medicine he needs. Katniss mixes it with berries & Peeta basically passes out. -Katniss goes to the Cornucopia for the feast; Foxface beats them all to her pack & Chap. 21 runs off. Katniss realizes that Foxface may be the real opponent in the Games. Katniss runs toward the table & Clove throws a knife; Katniss shoots an arrow at her & hits her arm. Katniss is hit with 2nd knife in forehead & Clove attacks her. Thresh yanks Clove off her & kills Clove for killing Rue. Thresh spares Katniss’ life to thank her for being with Rue. Katniss runs to the cave & injects Peeta with medicine, then passes out. (Green & Silver moth: luna moth? Symbolism for transformation.) -Peeta feels better & bandaged Katniss’s wounds. She knows that it would not be fair to her spouse to fall in love & not be able to start a family, so she shutting the door (or trying to keep it shut) to any romantic relationship. 5. If she shoots him in the face, Peeta will fall down to the wolves with Cato. 4. How does Cato die? First, Katniss shoots him in the hand (Peeta marks an X on Cato’s hand where she should shoot). This allows him to let go of Peeta. Cato then falls to the ground, almost taking Peeta with him. Katniss grabs Peeta, saving him. Cato battles with the wolves all night long. Katniss finally kills him out of mercy with the arrow that was used in Peeta’s tourniquet. 5. Why doesn’t the celebration begin as soon as Cato dies? Claudius Templesmith announces that they’ve revoked the previous announcement that 2 tributes can win, so now Peeta & Katniss must battle to win. 6. How does Peeta react to Claudius’s final announcement? Peeta throws his knife in the lake (knowing he would never kill Katniss). 7. How does Katniss react to it? Katniss pulls her bow & arrow on him, aiming at his heart. (Then feeling the shame of her actions, especially when Peeta’s reaction was the opposite to hers.) 8. How does Katniss “outsmart” the Gamemakers? When Peeta says they must have a victor, she knows that they wouldn’t let them both die, so she fakes a double suicide with the nightlock berries. Why doesn’t Katniss get to see Peeta? They want a dramatic reunion live on TV. 4. Describe the dress Cinna designs for Katniss’s exit interview. It is a simple yellow dress in a sheer fabric--like candlelight. (They padded her breasts and added curves--Cinna wouldn’t let them alter her surgically.) 5. How does it make Katniss look (what is the effect & how is she portrayed)? She looks young & innocent, harmless. This effect is meant to convince President Snow (and the people of the Capitol) that she is innocent in her suicide attempt--that she was really doing it out of love for Peeta, not to make fools of the Gamemakers, like it seems. 6. In your opinion, what is Cinna’s motivation for this design? Cinna is not like the other people from the Capitol (clues, perhaps, that he really isn’t, maybe??). He somehow knows that President Snow is upset with Katniss & he (Cinna) wants to help her. 7. What is Haymitch’s warning to Katniss? Why didn’t he have to tell Peeta? Haymitch warns that she better act crazy in love & be convincing. He didn’t have to warn Peeta-- it was never an act for him. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chapter 27 1. How had Cinna helped Katniss with his wardrobe choice for her? He knew she needed to look as girlish and innocent as possible. 2. How did the Capitol filmmakers edit Rue’s death? (Which part(s) did they eliminate?) They omit the part where Katniss covered her in flowers. 3. Why did the filmmakers edit that part or parts? Because it “smacked of rebellion.” Showing the tributes as real people, grieving for one another. Not just contestants; not just their “pawns.” If the Capitol audience feels this empathy toward the tributes, they won’t be able to continue the Games--there will be an uprising. Then how could they punish the districts?? 4. As part of their victors’ duties, what will Peeta & Katniss have to do in a few months? Go on a victory tour to all the districts (so the Capitol can remind the people that the Hunger Games never really go away). 5. What is Katniss’s & Peeta’s relationship like at the end of the book? Why? Strained-- Katniss keeps thinking of Gale & what will happen when she goes home. She knows she has lost her old identity & is struggling with her new one. She doesn’t know what she feels for Peeta because she has tried so hard not to allow herself to love anyone. She tells Peeta she’s confused. He is hurt, then distant and hollow.
