[Laughs]. And how many of you here have never been to China? Never been, never been to China. Don’t do it.‖ There’s only one person who said ―Jack, I trust you. I don’t know what that is, but if you want to try it, go ahead, try it. I started my first company, my wife and I and a school mate. We borrowed [start] from US $1,000 we start the business. It was so difficult. I called myself like a blind man riding on the back of blind tigers. Jumping around for the past 20 years I survive today. For the first three years life was really bad. I remember I tried to borrow US $3,000 from the banks. I invited ten media friends to my apartment. I want to tell them I’m not telling a lie. There is a network called Internet. We waited three hours and a half to see the first – to download the first picture. And people said ―Is that thing going to work?‖ And I say ―Yeah, it’ll work, but not today. Nobody want to sell because nobody come to buy. So first week we have seven employees, we buy and sell ourselves. The second week somebody start to sell on a website. We buy everything they sell. We have two rooms full of things we bought for New Year’s, [all garbage] for the first two weeks. In order to tell people that it works. It was not easy. Since 1995 to 1999 we failed. We believed China we don’t have a lot of big companies, we have so many small business, and small business it’s so difficult for them to survive. And we should not helping small guys to save cost, because small business know how to save the cost, but small business should learn how to make money. And people are curious – why 102 years? Because Alibaba was born in 1999, last year we had – last century we had one year, this century 100 years, next century one year. 102 across three centuries. We give a clear goal to any employees. Don’t say we are successful, no matter how much money we raised, no matter how much money we make, no matter how much we have achieved. Don’t forget we want to live 102 years. Now, 16 years passed, we have another 86 years to go. Because in next 86 years, if any time we die we’re never successful. When I heard this club is 108 years old I was surprised and shocked. You’re like Amazon.‖ Because in American point of view Amazon probably is the only business model for e-commerce. And we do not own inventories, but we do have more than 350 million buyers. We have more than 120 million buyers coming to shop every day on our site. And also, we sell – our revenue last – our sales last year were US$ 390 billion. And this year, possibly, we are going to be bigger than Walmart globally. Because here e-commerce is commerce, in China e-commerce is a lifestyle. Young people, they using e-commerce to exchange ideas, they communicate, they build up the trust, they build up a record. It’s just like Starbucks – you never go to Starbucks to test how wonderful coffee is. It’s a lifestyle. We are proud of that but we are more proud because we create direct [and indirect] job, 14 million jobs for China. And we’ve created jobs in the countryside. We created a lot of jobs for women. Our future is that we have to focus on globalizing our business. It's not only sell more things. We want to make, to globalize the infrastructure of eCommerce. Why Internet eCommerce grow so fast in China than in the USA? Because the infrastructure of commerce in China was too bad. Not like here. You have [Click] Motors. You have all the shops offline, Walmart, Kmart, everything everywhere. It's complementary to the main business. But in China it becomes the main course. We created the infrastructure. So we think if we globalize our infrastructure — the payment, the logistics center, the transparent platform all around the world. Helping the small business around the world to sell everywhere. Help the global consumers to buy everywhere. Our vision is in ten years we will help two billion consumers in the world to shop online anywhere in the world. You're shopping online with 72 hours you'll receive the product. And anywhere in China you shop online, you will receive the products within 24 hours. It's difficult to get a booth, finally, we got a small booth, we got the booth, but very few people found us. So we think that there must be a problem, and the problem is that we have to find a solution, that how we can be a company can live long and healthily like Mercedes-Benze, Siemens. If any industry can not live more than 3 years, if all the companies can not live happily for 3 years, this industry will never become the mainstream, this industry can never become the deep economy, So, what we want to do is that how we can find the solution. The world is changing so fast, most people don't realize what is IT, what is Internet, we’re moving very very fast today to technology. IT technology and digital technology, is not the technology difference, is the differences of people, the way people think, the way people deal with the world . We don't know what the world will look like in 30 years, and we don't know what the data will look like, but we are sure that the whole world in next 30 years will be changed . If the first and the second innovation and technology revolution relief all liberate the human strength, the physical strength, this revolution release a liberate the strength of human brain, the brain in innovation. The future world, we believe we’ll be connected not by oil, not by other things, but by datas. The future world, the business will be C2B notB2C, C2B is consumer to business, not business to consumer. because there will be a lot of datas, because of the datas, the manufacturer must do customerlized things, otherwise manufacturer will be very difficult. In the future, all the manufacturers, they make the machines, the machines can not only produce products, the machines must talk, the machine must think, And the machine is not going to be supported by oil, by electricity, the machine is going to be supported by datas. The future world, business will not focus on the size, business will no longer focus on standardization and power, they will focus on the flexibility, nimbleness, personalization and user friendly. And I also strongly believe the future world, we are going to have a lot of women leaders, because in the future, people will not only focus on muscles, powers, and they focus on wisdom, they focus on careless and responsibility. And I think the Internet must find the missing part,This missing part is how the clickers and motors can work together, and how we can make sure in the next 30 years, the internet and clickers and moters can work together, only clickers and moters can work together, the Internet and companies can survive, can live happily for next 30 years, and if that comes, that is what we called D-economy, is not just the digital economy, which I called data economy, and everything is going to be changed. And I also believe that the world is going to be beautiful, but also very challenging. Apple may not be the future, but Apple tells us what the future will look like, that is something in the machine is moving, that is data. We are at a great time of innovation, inspiration, invention and creativity, and I think everybody is working hard, try to realize their dreams. Today you see here, a real world of workers, truck drivers and game players, and also all these senior people, everybody in the ancient time, nobody can use technology to realize their dreams. But today, because of datas, everything becomes true. And I strongly believe, it’s not the technology that changed the world, it’s the dreams behind the technology that changed the world. If the technology changed the world, I'll never be here, I’m not betrained to be a science and technology experts. I know nothing about computer, and I know very little about the Internet, but I have a strong dream that we want to help small business. So, 14 years ago so we came here to sell Chinese products to Europe, that didn’t work. 14 years later, we try to help the European small business to China, to the world by using the Internet. It’s the dreams that drives the world, it’s not only the technology. So Ladies and gentlemen, let's work hard together, it is a fantastic world, it is a world belongs to young people, it is a world belongs to the future. He has performed a miracle, growing from a common teacher to a successful entrepreneur . Bill Gates said, “ The next Bill Gates is Mayun.” Forbes in America valued him as a person who has a short and thin figure as Napoleon, but also great aspirations the same as Napoleon. Almost everyone knows Alibaba and millions of people are surfing taobao.com to shopping online. It is Ma yun who make it more convenient for us to enjoy our life. Today I want to share with you something about how mayun succeeded and I hope his example not only benefits but all of you! The first is never give up! I never thought that I would have a chance in my life to be in the United Nations. I learned my English by myself when I was 12 years old, for whatever reasons, I don't know. I just felt in love with this language. Every morning from 5 o?clock I rode a bicycle for 40 minutes, to the Hangzhou hotel looking for foreign tourists to teach me English. I showed them around the city, they taught me English. Since then, I began to have a habit. You should use your own brain to think about it, just one more minutes. When everything about it is yes, wait one minute. When everybody says no, wait for one minute. Think about it carefully. ?Cause if you look at the world from a different way, you may do it in a different way. And tonight, I?m so honored to be inspired by all the Game Changer partners. By listening to their stories, I know there are so many things I should do, I can do better. There are so many things. And I think that here today I not represent of myself, but represent all the small guys, all the small business that I?ve been working with. 1995 when I left my University, I told my president of university that I?m going to be an entrepreneur, do the internet. He said: “What is Internet?” I said: “I don't know.” And he listened to me for two hours, and said: “Jack, I know you want to do something, I don't know what you do. I say: “Ok, ten years later, I will do that.” I know as a teacher as I said, teachers always believe the future, you believe that knowledge can change people's lives, you believe and you hope that your students are better than you are.
