Part I Reading Comprehension (共20小题,每小题2分,共40分) Directions: In this part there are four passages. Each passage is followed by four comprehension questions. Read the passage and answer the questions. Then mark your answer on the Answer Sheet. Passage 1 Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage: The biggest safety threat facing airlines today may not be a terrorist with a gun, but the man with the portable computer in business class. In the last 15 years, pilots have reported well over 100 incidents that could have been caused by electromagnetic interference. The source of this interference remains unconfirmed, but increasingly, experts are pointing the blame at portable electronic device such as portable computers, radio and cassette players and mobile telephones. RTCA, an organization which advises the aviation (航空) industry, has recommended that all airlines ban (禁止) such devices from being used during “critical” stages of flight, particularly take-off and landing. Some experts have gone further, calling for a total ban during all flights. Currently, rules on using these devices are left up to individual airlines. And although some airlines prohibit passengers from using such equipment during take-off and landing, most are reluctant to enforce a total ban, given that many passengers want to work during flights. The difficulty is predicting how electromagnetic fields might affect an aircraft’s computers. Experts know that portable device emit radiation which affects those wavelengths which aircraft use for navigation and communication. But, because they have not been able to reproduce these effects in a laboratory, they have no way of knowing whether the interference might be dangerous or not. The fact that aircraft may be vulnerable (易受损的) to interference raises the risk that terrorists may use radio systems in order to damage navigation equipment. As worrying, though, is the passenger who can’t hear the instructions to turn off his radio because the music’s too loud. 1. The passage is mainly about ________. A) a new regulation for al airlines B) the defects of electronic devices C) a possible cause of aircraft crashes D) effective safety measures for air flight 2. What is said about the over 100 aircraft incidents in the past 15 years? 南师专转本冲刺模拟考试卷 内部资料 严禁翻印 A) They may have been caused by the damage to the radio systems. B) They may have taken place during take-off and landing. C) They were proved to have been caused by the passengers’ portable computers. D) They were suspected to have resulted from electromagnetic interference. 3. Few airlines want to impose a total ban on their passengers using electronic devices because ________. A) they don’t believe there is such a danger as radio interference B) the harmful effect of electromagnetic interference is yet to be proved C) most passengers refuse to take a plane which bans the use of radio and cassette players D) they have other effective safety measures to fall back on 4. Why is it difficult to predict the possible effects of electromagnetic fields on an airplane’s computers? A) Because it is extremely dangerous to conduct such research on an airplane. B) Because it remains a mystery what wavelengths are liable to be interfered with. C) Because research scientists have not been able to produce the same effects in labs. D) Because experts lack adequate equipment to do such research. 5. It can be inferred from the passage that the author ________. A) is in favor of prohibiting passengers’ use of electronic devices completely B) has overestimated the danger of electromagnetic interference C) hasn’t formed his own opinion on this problem D) regards it as unreasonable to exercise a total ban during flight Passage 2 Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage: For some time past it has been widely accepted that babies-and other creatures-learn to do things because certain acts lead to “rewards”; and there is no reason to doubt that this is true. But it used also to be widely believed that effective reward, at least in the early stages, had to be directly related to such basic physiological (生理的) “drives” as thirst or hunger. In other words, a baby would learn if he got food or drink of some sort of physical comfort, not otherwise. It is now clear that this is not so. Babies will learn to behave in ways that produce results in the world with no reward except the successful outcome. Papousek began his studies by using milk in the normal way to “reward” the babies and so teach them to carry out some simple movements, such as turning the head to one side or the other. Then he noticed that a baby who had had enough to drink would refuse the milk but would still go on making the learned response with clear signs of pleasure. So he began to study the children’s responses in situations where no milk was provided. He quickly found that children as young as four months would learn to turn their heads to right or left if the movement “switched on” a 南师专转本冲刺模拟考试卷 内部资料 严禁翻印 display of lights, and indeed that they were capable of learning quite complex turns to bring about this result, for instance, two left or two right, or even to make as many three turns to one side. Papousek’s light display was placed directly in front of the babies and he made the interesting observation that sometimes they would not turn back to watch the lights closely although they would “smile and bubble” when the display came on. Papousek concluded that it was not primarily the sight of the lights which pleased them, it was the success they were achieving in solving the problem, in mastering the skill, and that there exists a fundamental human urge to make sense of the world and bring it under intentional control. 6. According to the author, babies learn to do things which ________. A) are directly related to pleasure B) will meet their physical needs C) will bring them a feeling of success D) will satisfy their curiosity 7. Papousek noticed in his studies that a baby ________. A) would make learned responses when it saw the milk B) would carry out learned movements when it had enough to drink C) would continue the simple movements without being given milk D) would turn its head to right or left when it had enough to drink 8. In Papousek’s experiment babies make learned movements of the head in order to ________. A) have the lights turned on B) be rewarded with milk C) please their parents D) be praised 9. The babies would “smile and bubble” at the lights because ________. A) the lights were directly related to some basic “drives” B) the sight of the lights was interesting C) they need not turn back to watch the lights D) they succeeded in “switching on” the lights 10. According to Papousek, the pleasure babies get in achieving something is a reflection of ________. A) a basic human desire to understand and control the world B) the satisfaction of certain physiological needs 南师专转本冲刺模拟考试卷 内部资料 严禁翻印 C) their strong desire to solve complex D) a fundamental human urge to display their learned skills Passage 3 Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage: When a consumer finds that an item she or he bought is faulty or in some way does not live up to the manufacturer’s claim for it, the first step is to present the warranty (保单), or any other records which might help, at the store of purchase. In most cases, this action will produce results. However, if it does not, there are various means the consumer may use to gain satisfaction. A simple and common method used by many consumers is to complain directly to the store manager. In general, the “higher up” the consumer takes his or her complaint, the faster he or she can expect it to be settled. In such a case, it is usually settled in the consumer’s favor, assuming he or she has a just claim. Consumers should complain in person whenever possible, but if they cannot get to the place of purchase, it is acceptable to phone or write the complaint in a letter. Complaining is usually most effective when it is done politely but firmly, and especially when the consumer can demonstrate what is wrong with the item in questions. If this cannot be done, the consumer will succeed best by presenting specific information as to what is wrong, rather than by making general statements. For example, “The left speaker does not work at all and the sound coming out of the right one is unclear” is better than “This stereo (立体声音响) does not work.” The store manager may advise the consumer to write to the manufacturer. If so, the consumer should do this, stating the complaint as politely and as firmly as possible. But if a polite complaint does not achieve the desired result, the consumer can go a step further. She or he can threaten to take the seller to court or report the seller to a private or public organization responsible for protecting consumers’ rights. 11. When a consumer finds that his purchase has a fault in it, the first thing he should do is to ________. A) complain personally to the manager B) threaten to take the matter to court C) write a firm letter of complaint to the store or purchase D) show some written proof of the purchase to the store 12. If a consumer wants a quick settlement of his problem, it’s better to complain to ________. A) a shop assistant B) the store manager C) the manufacturer D) a public organization 13. The most effective complaint can be made by ________. A) showing the faulty item to the manufacturer 南师专转本冲刺模拟考试卷 内部资料 严禁翻印 B) explaining exactly what is wrong with the item C) saying firmly that the item of poor quality D) asking politely to change the item 14. The phrase “live up” (Para. 1, Line 2) in the context means ________. A) meet the standard of B) realize the purpose of C) fulfill the demands of D) keep the promise of 15. The passage tells us ________. A) how to settle a consumer’s complaint about a faulty item B) how to make an effective complaint about a faulty item C) how to avoid buying a faulty item D) how to deal with complaints from customers Passage 4 Questions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage: Cancer is feared by everyone. And this fear is reaching epidemic(流行性) proportions. Not the disease itself — there is no such thing as a cancer epidemic. Except for lung cancer, mostly caused by cigarette smoking, the incidence rates are leveling off, and in the case of some kinds of cancer are decreasing. But the fear of cancer is catching, and the country stands at risk of an anxiety, The earth itself is coming to seem like a huge carcinogen(致癌物). The ordinary, more or less scientific statement that something between 80 and 90 percent of all cancers are due to things in the environment is taken to mean that none of us will be safe until the whole environment is “cleaned up.” This is not at all the meaning. The 80-percent calculation is based on the unthinkable differences in the incidence of cancer in various societies around the world — for example, the high proportion of liver cancer in Africa and the Far East, stomach cancer in Japan, breast cancer in Western Europe and North America, and the relatively low figures for breast cancer in Japan and parts of Africa and for liver cancer in America. These data indicate there may be special and specific environmental influences, largely based on personal life-style, that determine the incidence of various forms of cancer in different communities — but that is all the data suggest. The overall incidence of cancer, counting up all the cases, is probable roughly the same everywhere. 16(Which of the following is closest to meaning to the phrase “leveling off”? A) Became very popular B) Reached its lowest level in popularity C) Stopped being popular D) Stopped increasing its popularity 17(According to the passage, the incidence of cancer is generally believed _____. A)to be based on inactive life style B)to be due to anxiety C)to result from environmental influences 南师专转本冲刺模拟考试卷 内部资料 严禁翻印 D)to be caused by heavy smoking 18(It can be inferred from the passage that the writer’s opinion about the relationship between cancer and environment is_____. A) cancer risk is on the rise B) the whole earth resembles a huge carcinogen C) the risk of catching cancer is not so great as most people conceive D) cancer can be cured sooner or later 20(Which of the following would be the best TITLE for the passage?
