The ancient city of Liqian
Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. First of all, welcome to Gansu, welcome to China. I am your tour guide , my name is lijingyang. And I will try my best to serve you.
I hope, all of you must have had a good sleep last night and can enjoy the travel, right? Well, today our destination is the ancient city of Liqian, situated in southwest of Yongchang County in Jinchang city, Gansu Province. Now we are on the way to it. It will be half an hour for us to get there. Before our arrival, please let me give you a brief introduction of it.
Liqian is a mysterious and unique place, and maybe you have heard something about this city. Yes, compared with culture of other Chinese cities, the culture of Liqian differs from them in view and local customs. For example, Liqian people, are officially recognized as Han Chinese by Chinese government. But many of them have light colored hair and Caucasian features, which are sharply different from Han Chinese and most of the national minorities. They're European-looking. DNA tests in 2005 confirmed some of the villagers were indeed of Caucasian origin. And they have a traditional food like European pizza, even they worshipped bulls and their favorite game was similar to the ancient Romans' bull-fight. In the 1990s, Chinese archeologists were surprised to find the remains of an ancient fortification in Liqian, a remote town in Yongchang county on the edge of a desert area, that was strikingly similar to Roman defence. All these special things lead many experts to conclude they are descendants of an ancient Roman army headed by general Marcus Crassus. I guess you get confused now, what kind of connection can be between Liqian and Roman legions? There is a long story about it. But don't worry, I will make it more concise.
Long ago, at that time, China was reigning the Han Dynasty, when Europe was in the flourishing period of ancient Rome. In order to expand
national territory and plunder wealth, in 53 B.C., Crassus, archon of Rome, sent his seven legions to the eastern borders. Unfortunately, this legion was defeated and beheaded by the Parthians, a tribe occupying the territory, which now belongs to Iran, putting an end to Rome's eastward expansion. But an army of six thousands soldiers led by Crassus' eldest son apparently disappeared and was never found again. But according to the historical record
in 36 BC, the governor of the Western Regions in Western Han Dynasty was Ganyanshou. When he was fighting with the Huns, he captured a very peculiar mercenary. At that time, their tactics only used by Romans. After the war, he brought them back to China, arrived with them in Gansu Yongchang, one place is called “Liqian County”, and let them live down. In 592 A.D.,Yangjian ,emperor
of Sui Dynasty, issued an order that merge Liqian County into Fanhe County. By that time, Liqian County was built for 628 years. The village center near the Zhelai stockade road is “Liqian ruins”, the county
government has been erected stelae, and used chains to protect the site. Nowadays in the center of the ancient wall is erected a stone tablet, engraved four Chinese characters meaning “Liqian ruins”. In the back of the monument engraved the inscription about Liqian county's history. Of course, there are still some debates in science society about Liqian County's history. Sinologist of Oxford University Homer Hasenpflug Dubs thinks that ancestor of Liqian people was Roman prisoner. But professor of Fudan University Gejianxiong doesn't agree with this idea. He believes they just were some Roman merchants. Whatever the case, Liqian County has special history is a truth.
Now, in the 312 national road in Yongchang County, there are three human granite statues, two men and a woman, looking out the distance deeply. In the center of them, it is a Han Dynasty official with robe costume. And other two people have sturdy body,deep eyes and curly hair, one can recognize them from the western region people in the first
sight. A sheep standing next to the woman, and the man with a bunch of corn .It means these ancient Roman got the government's placement and engaged in agriculture and animal husbandry in the local. Finally, they blended in with Chinses. This special memorial atrraction was built in 1994 by local government. Next to the ruins, restored a new Liqian City. This new city is a square castle building, there are ancient Rome style residence, Pantheon, Rome street and the ancient Rome Square(Bernini Square). The core of the building is Pantheon, it is the copy of the Pantheon in Rome. All the building in the new city are very majestic and marvelous, and you can see them by yourself later.
