EF Extra: Understanding ‘Tag Questions’
(adapted from Englishtown Level 5 Unit 1 Overview)
Tag questions are short, contracted forms of negative or affirmative questions.
We use them to confirm information that is stated in the first part of the sentence.
Negative tag questions are constructed from verbs like be, do, have, or can and
the pronoun. They come at the end of the sentence. For example:
Basketball is popular in China, isn't it?
Chinese use chopsticks, don’t they?
*Notice that because the main verb is positive, the tag question verb is negative.
Positive tag questions are also constructed from verbs like be, do, have,
or can and the pronoun. They also come at the end of the sentence.
Hockey isn't popular in China, is it?
Chinese usually don’t use a fork, do they?
*Notice that, in this case, the main verb being negative, the tag question verb is
positive.
Rising intonation = speaker is uncertain; Falling intonation = speaker is confirming
