heISO/IECDirectives,Part2.ThemaintaskoftechnicalcommitteesistoprepareInternationalStandards.DraftInternationalStandardsadoptedbythetechnicalcommitteesarecirculatedtothememberbodiesforvoting.PublicationasanInternationalStandardrequiresapprovalbyatleast75%ofthememberbodiescastingavote.Attentionisdrawntothepossibilitythatsomeoftheelementsofthisdocumentmaybethesubjectofpatentrights.ISOshallnotbeheldresponsibleforidentifyinganyorallsuchpatentrights.ISO16852waspreparedbyTechnicalCommitteeISO/TC21,Equipmentforfireprotectionandfirefighting.©ISO2008–AllrightsreservedvNormen-Download-Beuth-BraunschweigerFlammenfilterGmbH-KdNr.381813-LfNr.4051302001-2008-06-0906:28B55EB1B3C7662F79D1B59483A53B9F2F82C98BEEB79391946AC566ADC1FE069461F44B1AC2DB479E9DA165B04E4AC188E532CDD81CF05018982D08A0749C34896C65EAF7692836A2542B000B0CBE2268F0B9782AB6ACBF9EFA7569C45D9D4321E803BF8F94ISO16852:2008(E)IntroductionFlamearrestersaresafetydevicesfittedtoopeningsofenclosuresortopipework,andareintendedtoallowflowbutpreventflametransmission.Theyhavewidelybeenusedfordecadesinthechemicalandoilindustry,andavarietyofnationalstandardsisavailable.ThisInternationalStandardwaspreparedbyaninternationalgroupofexperts,whoseaimwastoestablishaninternationalbasisbyharmonizingandincorporatingrecentnationaldevelopmentsandstandardsasfarasreasonable.ThisInternationalStandardaddressesmanufacturers(performancerequirements)andtestinstitutes(testmethods),aswellascustomers(limitsforuse).Onlyrelativelygeneralperformancerequirementsarespecifiedandthesearekepttoastrictminimum.Experiencehasshownthatexcessivelyspecificrequirementsinthisfieldoftencreateunjustifiedrestrictionsandpreventinnovativesolutions.Thehazardidentificationofcommonapplicationsfoundinindustryleadstothespecificationofthetestmethods.Thesetestmethodsreflectstandardpracticalsituationsand,assuch,formtheheartofthisInternationalStandardbecausetheyalsoallowclassificationofthevarioustypesofflamearrestersandthendeterminationofthelimitsofuse.Aconsiderablenumberoftestmethodsandtestconditionshadtobetakenintoaccountfortwomainreasons:a)differenttypesofflamearrestersarecoveredwithrespecttotheoperatingprinciple(static,hydraulic,liquid,dynamic),andeachtypeclearlyneedsitsspecifictestset-upandtestprocedure;b)itisnecessarytoadaptflamearresterstothespecialconditionsofapplication(gas,installation)becauseoftheconflictingdemandsofhighflamequenchingcapabilityandlowpressureloss;thissituationiscompletelydifferentfromtheotherwisesimilarprincipleofprotectionbyflameproofenclosure(ofelectricalequipment),wheretheimportanceofgasflowthroughgapsisnegligible.Consequently,inthisInternationalStandard,thetestingandclassificationrelatedtothegasgroupsandtheinstallationconditionshasbeensubdividedmorethanisusuallythecase.Inparticular,⎯explosiongroupIIAissubdividedintosub-groupsIIA1andIIA,⎯explosiongroupIIBissubdividedintosub-groupsIIB1,IIB2,IIB3andIIB,and⎯thetype“detonationarrester”isdividedintofoursub-types,whichtakeintoaccountspecificinstallationsituations.Thetestconditionsleadtothelimitsforusewhicharemostimportantforthecustomer.ThisInternationalStandardspecifiesthissafetyrelevantinformationanditsdisseminationthroughthemanufacturer'swritteninstructionsforuseandthemarkingoftheflamearresters.Thelimitsforusearealsoalinktomoregeneral(operational)safetyconsiderationsandregulations,whichremaintheresponsibilityofnationalorcorporateauthorities.AnnexesB,CandDoffersomeguidanceinthisfield.vi©ISO2008–AllrightsreservedNormen-Download-Beuth-BraunschweigerFlammenfilterGmbH-KdNr.381813-LfNr.4051302001-2008-06-0906:28B55EB1B3C7662F79D1B59483A53B9F2F82C98BEEB79391946AC566ADC1FE069461F44B1AC2DB479E9DA165B04E4AC188E532CDD81CF05018982D08A0749C34896C65EAF7692836A2542B000B0CBE2268F0B9782AB6ACBF9EFA7569C45D9D4321E803BF8F94INTERNATIONALSTANDARDISO16852:2008(E)Flamearresters—Performancerequirements,testmethodsandlimitsforuse1ScopeThisInternationalStandardspecifiestherequirementsforflamearrestersthatpreventflametransmissionwhenexplosivegas-airorvapour-airmixturesarepresent.Itestablishesuniformprinciplesfortheclassification,basicconstructionandinformationforuse,includingthemarkingofflamearresters,andspecifiestestmethodstoverifythesafetyrequirementsanddeterminesafelimitsofuse.ThisInternationalStandardisvalidforpressuresrangingfrom80kPato160kPaandtemperaturesrangingfrom−20°Cto+150°C.NOTE1Indesigningandtestingflamearrestersforoperationunderconditionsotherthanthosespecifiedabove,thisInternationalStandardcanbeusedasaguide.However,additionaltestingrelatedspecificallytotheintendedconditionsofuseisadvisable.Thisisparticularlyimportantwhenhightemperaturesandpressuresareapplied.Thetestmixturesmightneedtobemodifiedinthesecases.ThisInternationalStandardisnotapplicabletothefollowing:⎯externalsafety-relatedmeasurementandcontrolequipmentthatmightberequiredtokeeptheoperationalconditionswithintheestablishedsafelimits;NOTE2Integratedmeasurementandcontrolequipment,suchasintegratedtemperatureandflamesensorsaswellaspartswhich,forexample,intentionallymelt(retainingpin),burnaway(weatherhoods)orben
