Alice'sAdventuresinWonderlandAuthorLewisCarrollCountryUnitedKingdomLanguageEnglishGenreFictionFollowed byThroughtheLooking-GlassPlotChapterOne–DowntheRabbitHole: Alice,agirlofsevenyears,isfeelingboredanddrowsywhilesittingontheriverbankwithhereldersister.Shethennoticesatalking,clothed WhiteRabbit withapocketwatchrunpast.Shefollowsitdownarabbitholewhensuddenlyshefallsalongwaytoacurioushallwithmanylockeddoorsofallsizes.Shefindsasmallkeytoadoortoosmallforhertofitthrough,butthroughitsheseesanattractivegarden.Shethendiscoversabottleonatablelabelled"DRINKME,"thecontentsofwhichcausehertoshrinktoosmalltoreachthekeywhichshehasleftonthetable.Sheeatsacakewith"EATME"writtenonitincurrantsasthechaptercloses.ChapterTwo–ThePoolofTears:ChapterTwoopenswithAlicegrowingtosuchatremendoussizeherheadhitstheceiling.Aliceisunhappyand,asshecries,hertearsfloodthehallway.Aftershrinkingdownagainduetoafanshehadpickedup,Aliceswimsthroughherowntearsandmeetsa Mouse,whoisswimmingaswell.ShetriestomakesmalltalkwithhiminelementaryFrench(thinkinghemaybeaFrenchmouse)butheropeninggambit"Oùestmachatte?"("Whereismycat?")offendsthemouseandhetriestoescapeher.ChapterThree–TheCaucusRaceandaLongTale:Theseaoftearsbecomescrowdedwithotheranimalsandbirdsthathavebeensweptawaybytherisingwaters.Aliceandtheotheranimalsconveneonthebankandthequestionamongthemishowtogetdryagain.TheMousegivesthemaverydrylectureon WilliamtheConqueror.A Dodo decidesthatthebestthingtodrythemoffwouldbeaCaucus-Race,whichconsistsofeveryonerunninginacirclewithnoclearwinner.Aliceeventuallyfrightensalltheanimalsaway,unwittingly,bytalkingabouther(moderatelyferocious)cat.ChapterFour–TheRabbitSendsaLittleBill:TheWhiteRabbitappearsagaininsearchoftheDuchess'sglovesandfan.Mistakingherforhismaidservant,MaryAnn,heordersAlicetogointothehouseandretrievethem,butonceshegetsinsideshestartsgrowing.ThehorrifiedRabbitordershisgardener, BilltheLizard,toclimbontheroofandgodownthechimney.Outside,Alicehearsthevoicesofanimalsthathavegatheredtogawkathergiantarm.Thecrowdhurlspebblesather,whichturnintolittlecakes.Aliceeatsthem,andtheyreduceheragaininsize.ChapterFive–AdvicefromaCaterpillar:Alicecomesuponamushroomandsittingonitisablue Caterpillar smokinga hookah.TheCaterpillarquestionsAliceandsheadmitstohercurrentidentitycrisis,compoundedbyherinabilitytorememberapoem.Beforecrawlingaway,thecaterpillartellsAlicethatonesideofthemushroomwillmakehertallerandtheothersidewillmakehershorter.Shebreaksofftwopiecesfromthemushroom.Onesidemakeshershrinksmallerthanever,whileanothercauseshernecktogrowhighintothetrees,whereapigeonmistakesherforaserpent.Withsomeeffort,Alicebringsherselfbacktohernormalheight.Shestumblesuponasmallestateandusesthemushroomtoreachamoreappropriateheight.ChapterSix–PigandPepper:AFish-Footmanhasaninvitationforthe Duchess ofthehouse,whichhedeliverstoaFrog-Footman.Aliceobservesthistransactionand,afteraperplexingconversationwiththefrog,letsherselfintothehouse.TheDuchess'sCookisthrowingdishesandmakingasoupthathastoomuchpepper,whichcausesAlice,theDuchess,andherbaby(butnotthecookorgrinning CheshireCat)tosneezeviolently.AliceisgiventhebabybytheDuchessandtohersurprise,thebabyturnsintoapig.TheCheshireCatappearsinatree,directinghertothe MarchHare'shouse.HedisappearsbuthisgrinremainsbehindtofloatonitsownintheairpromptingAlicetoremarkthatshehasoftenseenacatwithoutagrinbutneveragrinwithoutacat.ChapterSeven–AMadTea-Party:Alicebecomesaguestata"mad"teapartyalongwiththe MarchHare,the Hatter,andaverytired Dormouse whofallsasleepfrequently,onlytobeviolentlywokenupmomentslaterbythe MarchHare andthe Hatter.ThecharactersgiveAlicemanyriddlesandstories,includingthefamous'Whyisaravenlikeawritingdesk?'.TheHatterrevealsthattheyhaveteaalldaybecauseTimehaspunishedhimbyeternallystandingstillat6 pm(teatime).Alicebecomesinsultedandtiredofbeingbombardedwithriddlesandsheleavesclaimingthatitwasthestupidestteapartythatshehadeverbeento.ChapterEight–TheQueen'sCroquetGround:Aliceleavestheteapartyandentersthegardenwhereshecomesuponthreelivingplayingcardspaintingthewhiterosesonarosetreeredbecause TheQueenofHearts hateswhiteroses.Aprocessionofmorecards,kingsandqueensandeventheWhiteRabbitentersthegarden.AlicethenmeetstheKingandQueen.TheQueen,afiguredifficulttoplease,introduceshertrademarkphrase"Offwithhishead!"whichsheuttersattheslightestdissatisfactionwithasubject.Aliceisinvited(orsomemightsayordered)toplayagameofcroquetwiththeQueenandtherestofhersubjectsbutthegamequicklydescendsintochaos.LiveflamingosareusedasmalletsandhedgehogsasballsandAliceonceagainmeetstheCheshireCat.TheQueenofHeartsthenorderstheCattobebeheaded,onlytohaveherexecutionercomplainthatthisisimpossiblesincetheheadisallthatcanbeseenofhim.BecausethecatbelongstotheDuchess,theQueenispromptedtoreleasetheDuchessfromprisontoresolvethematter.ChapterNine–TheMockTurtle'sStory:TheDuchessisbroughttothecroquetgroundatAlice'srequest.Sheruminatesonfindingmoralsineverythingaroundher.TheQueenofHeartsdismissesheronthethreatofexecutionandsheintroducesAlicetothe Gryphon,whotakeshertothe MockTurtle.TheMockTurtleisverysad,eventhoughhehasnosorrow.Hetriestotellhisstoryabouthowheusedtobearealturtleinschool,whichtheGryphoninterruptssotheycanplayagame.ChapterTen–LobsterQuadrille:TheMockTurtleandtheGryphondancetotheLobsterQuadrille,whileAlicerecites(ratherincorrectly)"'TistheVoiceoftheLobster".TheMockTurtlesingsthem"BeautifulSoup"duringwhichtheGryphondragsAliceawayforanimpendingtrial.ChapterEleven–WhoStoletheTarts?:Aliceattendsatrialwherebythe KnaveofHearts isaccusedofstealingtheQueen'starts.Thejuryiscomposedofvariousanimals,including BilltheLizard,theWhiteRabbitisthecourt'strumpeter,andthejudgeisthe KingofHearts.Duringtheproceedings,Alicefindsthatsheissteadilygrowinglarger.ThedormousescoldsAliceandtellshershehasnorighttogrowatsucharapidpaceandtakeupalltheair.Alicescoffsandcallsthedormouse'saccusationridiculousbecauseeveryonegrowsandshecannothelpit.Meanwhile,witnessesatthetrialincludetheHatter,whodispleasesandfrustratestheKingthroughhisindirectanswerstothequestioning,andtheDuchess'scook.ChapterTwelve–Alice'sEvidence:Aliceisthencalledupasawitness.SheaccidentallyknocksoverthejuryboxwiththeanimalsinsidethemandtheKingorderstheanimalsbeplacedbackintotheirseatsbeforethetrialcontinues.TheKingandQueenorderAlicetobegone,citingRule42("Allpersonsmorethanamilehightoleavethecourt"),butAlicedisputestheirjudgementandrefusestoleave.SheargueswiththeKingandQueenofHeartsovertheridiculousproceedings,eventuallyrefusingtoholdhertongue.TheQueenshoutsherfamiliar"Offwithherhead!"butAliceisunafraid,callingthemoutasjustapackofcards;justastheystarttoswarmoverher.Alice'ssisterwakesherupfromadream,brushingwhatturnsouttobesomeleavesandnotashowerofplayingcardsfromAlice'sface.Aliceleaveshersisteronthebanktoimagineallthecurioushappeningsforherself.
