Nasruddin said that cold weather did not trouble him, and in fact, he could stay, if necessary, all night without any heat.“If you stand all night in the village square without warming yourself by any other means, we with treat you to a feast,”they said, with looks of total disbelief.“But if you fail, you will treat us all to dinner.”Nasruddin accepted the bet. The very night, Nasruddin stood in the village square till morning despite (尽管) the bitter cold. In the morning, he ran proudly to his friends and told them that they should keep their promise. “But as a matter of fact you lost the bet,”said one of them.“At about midnight, I saw a candle burning in a window about three hundred yards away from where you were standing. That certainly means that you warmed yourself by it.” “How can a candle behind a window warm a person three hundred yards away?” Nasruddin argued. But no matter what he said, the men were not convinced. And it was decided that he had lost the bet. He had to invite all of them to dinner that night at his home. They all arrived on time, laughing and joking, awaiting the feast. But dinner was not ready. Nasruddin told them that it would be ready in a short time, and left the room to prepare the meal. A long time passed, and still no dinner was served. Finally, they went into the kitchen. What they saw, they could not believe. Nasruddin was standing by a huge pot which hung from the ceiling. There was a lighted candle under the pot. “Be patient, my friends,”Nasruddin told them.“Dinner will be ready soon.” “Are you out of your mind, Nasruddin?”they shouted.“How could you with such a tiny flame boil such a large pot?” “If the flame of a candle behind a window three hundred yards away can warm a person, surely the same flame will boil this pot which is only three inches away,”answered Nasruddin. 21(According to Paragraph 1, the attitude of Nasruddin’s friends toward what he said was _____. A(supportive B(worried C(satisfied D(doubtful 22(Nasruddin’s friends insisted that _____. A(he stayed inside a house that night B(he ran quickly to keep warm that night C(he warmed himself with a candle D(he spent that night in a wrong place 23(What did Nasruddin’s friends find in the kitchen? A(Nasruddin was not in the kitchen at all. B(Nasruddin was boiling his pot with a candle. C(There was only an empty pot on the ground. D(There was no fire to boil the large pot. B Falling through thin ice kills many people every year. Knowing the conditions and thickness of the ice can save your life or the life of someone close. Snow-covered ice makes it difficult to check the thickness. Stay away from cracks or darker areas. It is always a good idea for ice fishers to drill (钻孔) test holes as they go further out onto the lake. This is because ice can vary (变化) in thickness from one part of the lake to the other. Daily changes in temperature can cause ice to change so be sure to ask the locals before you set out. Four inches of ice is okay for a group of people to walk on, six inches for snowmobiles, twelve inches for an automobile and fifteen inches for a truck. During the early winter it is advised to double these figures. When you are not sure of the ice you should also be wearing a life jacket and carry a cellphone. If someone falls through be sure to act quickly by calling 911. Try to reach the victim with a long pole, a rope, or something long. If you can’t do that, throw the victim a life jacket or wood or something else that you can find. Only go to the victim if you can’t do anything else. Do this by forming a human chain where everyone lies down and grabs the person in front by the ankles (踝). After the victim is saved, his wet clothing should be removed and replaced with dry clothing quickly, or he would be freezing. If possible, you should put the victim in a sleeping bag. Immediately take him to the hospital for further treatment. With this knowledge you can have safer ice fishing and save someone’s life. 24(Why are ice fishers advised to drill holes as they go further out onto the lake? A(Because in different areas the thickness of ice is different. B(Because ice fishers can catch fish through these holes. C(Because ice fishers can look for fish through the holes. D(Because there are many cracks in the ice of the lake. 25(How thick should the ice be for a truck to drive on in the early winter? A(Twelve inches. B(Fifteen inches. C(Twenty inches. D(Thirty inches. 26(What should people do to go to the victim according to the passage? A(Rush to him and pull him out. B(Jump into the water to save him. C(Throw a life jacket and help him swim out. D(Lie on the ice forming a human chain to save him. 27(After saving the victim, one should immediately _____. A(put him into a sleeping bag B(change his wet clothes for dry ones C(give him first aid D(take him to hospital C Every weekday, I begin my morning with water aerobics (有氧运动). What a wonderful start to the day! And as our exercise group work out, there is plenty of talk and laughter. Last Friday, we had a long conversation about the importance of laughter to health. During the conversation, I mentioned one of my life-changing books—“Anatomy of an Illness” by Norman Cousins. In this book, Cousins tells how laughter was important in his healing when he was fighting against a deadly disease. Friday’s exercise group was made up of 20-somethings to 70-somethings, and, to my surprise, no one remembered Cousins. How quickly we forget! Norman Cousins (1915 to 1990) was the editor of Saturday Review for 30 years and a well-known political journalist. In 1964, after returning from a visit to Moscow, he became suddenly ill. He was told he had Anklyosing Spondylitis, a deadly illness of unknown cause. When he was told he had only a short time to live, he left the hospital and moved to a hotel with his wife. Then, with the permission of his doctor, he took charge of his healing using a positive attitude, laughter and large amounts of vitamin C. He watched funny movies and shows, such as Marx Brothers movies and“Candid Camera”. And he laughed heartily. The treatment proved to be so effective (有效的) that in very little time Cousins was off all painkillers and sleeping pills. At the end of one month, Cousins returned to the hospital for a checkup. The doctors found no sign of the killer disease. He completely recovered! Then he returned to work and wrote about his experimental treatment in his book“Anatomy of an Illness”. It was with this book that Cousins inspired a“humor therapy”movement. When I first read“Anatomy of an Illness”30 years ago, I was struck by the idea that if laughter could heal illness, why wait to get sick. As a result, we watch at least one old situation comedy every day and purposely laugh as hard as we can. Cousins said,“Hearty laughter is a good way to jog (慢跑) without having to go outdoors.”So why not try it today? 28(The first two paragraphs are used to _____. A(introduce a good book B(bring the topic up C(explain the cause of a disease D(show the value of exercise 29(What do we know about Norman Cousins? A(He was fully healed just after a month. B(He recovered mainly because of vitamin C. C(He was treated in a local hospital. D(He was a doctor before he fell ill. 30(The author’s attitude towards Cousins’ experimental treatment is that of _____. A(unconcern B(satisfaction C(doubt D(belief 31(In the passage, the author intends to tell us _____. A(sport is important for health B(where there is life, there is hope C(laughter is the best medicine D(good health is more important than wealth D More than half of all parents believe modern life is so hectic that it is impossible to devote enough time to playing with their children, new research reveals. The study blames (指责) the pressures of modern life for harming childhood. It finds that long working hours, lengthy journeys to work and“unavoidable duties”have left millions disappointed by the lack (缺乏) of opportunities to have fun with their families. More homework is also considered as something that takes a lot of time away from children. “Children—especially younger ones—want to play with their parents, and their parents want it too. But this research shows they are missing out,”said Adrian Voce, director of Play England. The vast majority (大多数) of adults think lack of play leaves children bored and less happy, reduces their concentration and makes them naughtier. “It makes us question whether schools are getting the balance right. Children need time to relax and to form the friendships that are so important. It helps them to go back into the classroom to learn,”said Voce, who argued that unstructured play led to an instinctive (本能的) form of learning that formal lessons could never match. But some parents said they felt that there were not enough places for their children to play safely. Others felt that children were so used to having things bought for them that they did not know how to make up games any more. Parents are so busy that they think they can make up by buying things—and the result is that children are always looking for something that is paid for. When Amanda Allard, 43, puts her son James Bailes, six, to bed he sometimes says: “Mummy, in the morning I want you to play the Playmobil with me.” “And I know that is going to be impossible,”says Amanda.“I wish I could say‘No problem, let’s play with the Playmobil’. It is not like they are asking to go to Legoland—they just want to spend time with their parents.” 32(What does the underlined word“hectic”in the first paragraph mean? A(Limited. B(Simple. C(Busy. D(Hard. 33(According to Voce, playing will make children _____. A(learn something effectively in class B(unable to pay attention in class fail to finish their homework on time C( D(get smarter and naughtier 34(What will happen to children if parents always buy things for them? A(They will spend money as they please. B(They will be less creative in making up games. C(They will be unhappy about something cheap. D(They won’t understand how hard it is to make money. 35(What is the main idea of the passage? A(Many families can’t stand the pressures of life. B(Most parents worry about children’s safety in playing. C(Many children improve their behaviors in playing together. D(Most parents can’t find enough time to play with their children. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多 余选项。 Are you stressed out, scared or worried all the time? Anxiety is your brain’s way of telling you about danger. It is anxiety that helps you jump out of the way if a car is speeding towards you. But if it gets out of hand, anxiety can get in the way of your getting on with life and can become a real problem. 37 Anxiety is a normal part of life. 38 There are lots of reasons for this. So, if you are involved in a car crash, it’s quite likely that you will be more worried than other people around cars and driving. 39 If your parents suffer from anxiety, then you are more likely to be anxious, too. What we should do is just to keep on trying, one thing at a time, until we make it, ignoring the difficulties that have come in our way. Playing the violin was once my dream, but for lack of practice and playing skills, I did very badly in the beginning, so I was often teased by other students. But I never lost confidence in myself, because I felt that as long as I kept practicing, things were sure to turn up. Just as my teacher told me,“Nothing is easy. Pain and struggle are the vital parts of our life.”By pushing myself harder to practice it I made slow but steady progress. Eventually I won first place in a violin competition. For the first time, I tasted the flavor of success after my struggle. From my experience I’ve learnt that it is pain and struggle that lead us to success. Whatever difficulties we are faced with, as long as we don’t give up and learn even one bit at a time, we are sure to succeed.
