The Semester #1 starts on late September and ends at the end of January. The Semester #2 starts on March and ends on the second week of June. 2. When do you recommend Erasmus students to start a turn at your university? Are there any introductory courses offered by your department? Where can students find information about these courses? All the general information about courses can be found at the faculty’s web page (www.fcsh.unl.pt); detailed information on the courses provided by the History Department are at its web page (www.fcsh.unl.pt/deps/historia). In order to study at our university students should start gatering information at least 2 or 3 months before the deadline for submitting applications. 3. What subjects of history do you offer? What are main research interests at your department? Our History Department offers a graduate course on general history, with a special focus on European History and Portuguese History. 4. What form does teaching at your department take (seminars, lectures...)? At a graduate level our department offers mostly lectures. Seminars are offered at a post-graduate level (Master’s course). 5. Are Erasmus students free to take part in all courses offered? Yes. 6. Does your department offer instruction in English? ththYes. Up to now a course entitled ?The Portuguese Colonial Experience (16-18 centuries)?. New courses are envisaged on Contemporary History of Portugal and Medieval and Early-Modern history of Portugal. 7. Do you recommend certain courses? In principle the courses on Portuguese history are likely to be the most original for foreign students. 8. What do you expect from students as course participants (attendance, participation in discussion, oral or written exams, research papers...)? Students area expected to attend to most classes, take part in discussion and do all the obligatory evaluations (tests, research papers and exams). 9. How do you register for courses? Are there guaranteed places for Erasmus students? All courses are open to Erasmus students. 10. Who is the contact person for Erasmus students at your department? Prof. Doctor Amélia Aguiar Andrade. 11. Do you have any particular wishes, ideas and proposals concerning Erasmus students? One suggestion: try to find roommates that are Portuguese, so the Erasmus students have the opportunity to speak and practice Portuguese. 12. Have language skills of former foreign students from our department been satisfactory? It depends. Some have improved a lot, whereas other have not. It all depends on how hard they try to learn Portugueses.
