Script: Do you check your work emails when you're on holiday? Do you call your colleagues to ask what's happening in the office even on a day off? I do. When I see no signal on my mobile phone in a busy shopping centre or no wi-fi in the hotel by the beach, I get anxious. Yes, I'm addicted to work. Technology fuels our need to stay connected all the time. Portable gadgets allow us to work from home, free from the nine-to-five routine, but they also make it more difficult for us to relax and recharge our batteries. Dr. Christine Grant is an occupational psychologist at Coventry University in Britain. She's been studying workers' inability to relax when off duty. She says: "In my research I found a number of people who were burnt out because they were travelling with technology all the time, no matter what time zone they were in." Indeed, not all employers want us to be connected all the time. German car maker Daimler, for example, has offered to automatically delete emails sent to employees while they're on holiday. The sender of the email receives a message asking them to get in touch with another employee who's on duty, or to re-send the message at a later date. Does the sender get offended? No, says the company spokesman Oliver Wihofszki. According to him: "The response is basically 99% positive, because everybody says, 'that's a real nice thing, I would love to have that too.'" Perhaps we should all take some time out to consider whether we are addicted to work, addicted to technology, or both. It's good to switch off once in a while. Key: 1. D 2. B 3. C 4. D 5. Conversation 1 M: Janet, why did you become a nurse? F: I think I always wanted to be a nurse. I want to work with people and help people, and I like the fact that nursing is a very important job. M: What qualities should a nurse have? F: First, nurses must be clever and also practical. They should be able to think for themselves. But they must be able to work well in a team, but I think the most important quality is to be able to laugh at things, and not get too worried. M: What kind of training have you had? F: Well, my training had three parts. They were Nursing, Patient and Illness. The course was a mixture of theory and practice. We had one week of theory, followed by eight weeks of practice in a hospital. We mainly learned through practice, and it’s really hard work to do all that studying! M: Well, now, what don’t you like about your job? F: Well, first, it’s very hard work. We work 37.5 hours a week, but we often have to do extra work, because there aren’t enough nurses in the hospital. The next problem is night duty. Working at night is very tiring and difficult. The third problem, of course, is that you get very low pay for your hard work. Oh, finally, it’s very hard during your training because you have to study when you are tired. Question 1. M: As you can see, my strongest subjects were art subjects. My best subject was history and my second best was geography. However, my favorite subject was math and the results I got in the math paper were quite reasonable. F: That's true. Now can you tell me why you think these subjects will help you in this job? M: Well, ma'am, I understand that you manufacture computers, prepare software and advise clients on how to use them. Is that right? F: That's right. M: And I've been told that working with computers needs the logical mind rather than great skills in mathematics. That's especially true, I believe, when it comes to writing programs. So I think my results show that I have some ability in logic and in mathematics as well. F: So you would like to write material for computers, would you? M: Yes, ma'am, that's what interests me most about computers: writing programs. But I think the computer industry itself is still expanding enormously. I am sure that career prospects in the industry will be very good no matter what sort of job I went into. F: I see. Well, thank you. I've enjoyed our talk, we'll be writing to you.
