Good morning teachers!It’s my turn to give a brief introduction about my thesis. At the very beginning, I’d like to express my sincere thanks to all of teachers here to come and attend my thesis answered. Thank you! Now, let me show something about my thesis, the title of my thesis is .I finished this paper with much useful help of my tutor XX. Many thanks give him here! In our daily life, usually it is inevitable to meet some embarrassing, sensitive topics when we communicate with others. To avoid these unacceptable issues and achieve a pleasant communication, people tend to use more roundabout and euphemistic ways to express. This language phenomenon is called euphemism. Euphemism is a perfect approach for people to achieve a well-organized social communication. This is why I chose to have a research on this phenomenon. As to the structure of this thesis, it consists of four chapters. Chapter one is an introduction, which gives a general account of research background and the development at home and abroad. Chapter two mainly focus on the study of English euphemism, which includes its definition, classification, pragmatic characteristic. Chapter three gives a detailed analysis of the application of euphemism from pragmatic perspective. As a case study, all language materials are selected from the first season of The Desperate Housewives and are analyzed in detail to find the feature of English euphemism. Chapter four gives a summary of the whole study. From the above research, it can be seen that the ultimate purpose of using euphemism is to show politeness, to protect faces of both speakers and addresses and even the third party. Therefore, the correct application of euphemisms can improve o ne’s communication ability and avoid communication barriers. Finally, on one hand, I wish that this research will be useful for those people who are interested in this field, or those people who need these knowledgeable. On the other hand, I know I have tried my best to collect materials and do deep analysis, but there must still be some weak points. I hope you can raise questions and perfect this thesis. Thank you again!
