1 Differences between countries are becoming less evident. People all over the world share the same brands, advertising, eating habits and television channels. Do you think the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages? Nowadays, due to the rapid development of transport and telecommunication, citizens are able to share the same information from different countries, such as films and brands. In this essay, I will analysis the advantages and disadvantages. It is evident that this cultural assimilation is beneficial to individuals. First of all, with less difference, misunderstanding and discrimination can be eliminated or alleviated when people travel to other countries. In the past, citizens often found themselves creating tension and conflicts with local residents when they are abroad, since they were unfamiliar to exotic custom, which was pretty different from ours. Besides, it enables citizens to make friend from foreign countries without barriers. By exposing to the same information from mass media, people are able to talk about the same topic, which, consequently, strengthen the friendship, even promote the communication between countries. However, we cannot be blind to the weaknesses accompanied by this phenomenon. Although cultural assimilation gains its popularity, it does erode the aboriginal culture and economy. There is no denying that culture invasion has never being ceasing its step in every itch of our daily life. For instance, quite a few people, especially the youngsters, are addicted to fast food when they are introduced to China. The traditional food is abandoned, such ad steamed buns, dumplings; it is harmful to not only their health but also the sense of belonging to identical culture. Even worse, it is indisputable that some small companies will go bankrupt for the products or service the have cannot catch up with foreign big companies, which is so prevailing in indigenous area. To sum up, as we individuals are incapable of stopping the sweeping trend, we should bear in mind that what suit us is the best choice 2 Some people think that employers should be required to employ equal numbers of men and women. To what extent do you agree or disagree? The gender imbalance has long been a general phenomenon in the labour market. Some analysts argue that it is impossible to eliminate the underrepresentation of women in job markets, while others propose that women should be entitled the same opportunity to be engaged in a position. The essay will compare these two opinions before giving my own opinion. From some people’s point of view, the practice that equal numbers of male and female workers should be employed is unreasonable. First, the packed-schedule of certain positions is likely to make women so busy with their jobs that their family life is neglected. Another point is that it is much easier for female workers to be influenced by marriage and motherhood, and their jobs are often interrupted by daily domestic events. To keep the continuity of work, employers are more inclined to put male workers into their top priority. Opponents of this issue hold that the positive aspects of the practice are more influential. First of all, employing equal numbers of male and female workers can help create positive working environment, for it is usually the case that men or women perform less aggressive in the face of the opposite gender. Second, there is a large possibility that men and women workers bring their respective talents into full play since men are more determined and less likely to be affected by external influence and women are generally more careful and patient. Finally, the move could be regarded as a sign of equality, for in many workplaces, employers used to limit the numbers of women workers and welcome a substantial percentage of males to join them. The practice that equal numbers of men and women workers are accepted indicates the realisation of women’s value. To sum up, it does bring drawbacks to some workplaces if equal numbers of men and women workers are employed, but this cannot deny the benefits of the practice. This essay is inclined to maintain that equal numbers of male and female workers can be employed in the same workplace given that there is a rational division of labour, with all employees developing their own particular advantages for mutual benefits. 3 When students study a foreign language, they should also study the culture and lifestyles of the people who speak the language. Do you agree or disagree? Nowadays, it is not uncommon for students to learn a new language due to a variety of reasons. These students are proposed to study a culture and lifestyle of local speakers when they study the targeted language. This proposal may be a good idea. Firstly, it makes the learning process less boring, as it can provide students with more motivation and pleasure when learning a new language. In my country, following the mathematics, language learning principle takes the second place as one of the most unwelcoming but compulsory courses. By learning the abundant and colorful culture and lifestyle, people would gain an interesting learning experience. Additionally, it would make the learning process more efficiently for providing students with language background of culture and lifestyles.  As we all know, a language born is closely related to its local culture and inhabitants’ lifestyle. If we know much about the culture and lifestyles, we would have a better command of the new language rooting in them. Therefore, the efficiency is raised. Also, the purpose of learning a foreign language is not only to reading books written in that language but also to communicate with the native speakers and then accomplishing some jobs. When it comes to communication, on no account can we ignore the importance of culture and lifestyles. People will gain more respect towards local customs and make a good impression as they know much about local culture. On the other hand, there are various aspects against this proposal. More specifically, learning a new language well depends more on individuals’ talent and learning ability than objective conditions. Culture and lifestyles of native speakers may not be the contributor of learning a new language well. Each learner has their own learning habits. No one actually can judge whether culture and lifestyles of native speakers are beneficial to language learners or not.  Furthermore, so precious and limited is time , especially for students, that they cannot waste time learning the local culture and lifestyles relevant to the targeted language. Though we cannot emphasize the importance of learning a foreign language to much, Students should be encouraged to allocate their schedule more appropriately and wisely for other courses of equal significance. In conclusion, helpful as culture and lifestyles of native speakers for some individuals to some extent, it is unfair to ask every student to learn those, as everyone has their own schedule and learning habits. 4 Schools should only offer subjects that are beneficial to students’ future career success. Other subjects, such as music and sports, are not important. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Today, education has become a priority for many people seeking to secure a good future for students in this rapidly changing world. They believe that if students apply themselves and work hard at school, then they will increase their opportunities for going to high education and eventually getting a good job. Of course they are right, and as access to the best jobs is becoming more competitive, it is true that students have to make the best of studying time when they are young. They should obtain enough knowledge and experience about their majors, which is one of the main factors for the future career. However, it is misguided that students are not allowed sufficient free time for leisure activities. Such activities are far from being a waste time for students simply because they are not academic. It is important to remember that students need to develop skills other than intellectual ones, and the best way to do this is through activities such as music, sports and playing with others. If they cannot play make-believe games, how can they develop their imagination? How can they learn physical coordination and learn important social lessons about winning and losing if they do not practice any sports? Many students form strong, personal relationships with their friends. They play with, and without the opportunity to do this, they would grow up emotionally immature. Thus, the psychological state and personality are also the essential quality to make sure a career success in the future. Finally, I think it is also important to remember that students need to relax as well as work. If everything they do must have some academic and working relevance, they will soon get tired of studying altogether, which is the last thing that people would want. 5 Some people think that high-school students should be encouraged to evaluate their teachers. Others, however, believe that will result in loss of respect and discipline in the classroom. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion. 6 Distance education delivered over the Internet or television has more advantages than classroom-based education. Do you agree or disagree? It is true that distance education has many advantages, but I do not think that distance education can replace classroom learning. There is an undoubted fact that the remote education can make learning more convenient. In fact, no matter how far the distance or how early or late the time is, we can still enjoy distance education because the educational resources online are normally easy-to-reach. For instance, in order to improve their study skills, students are encouraged to download and watch online videos that are made by some educationalists or specialists. Such resources are usually more professional for it is provided by experts or university professors.  However, there are more benefits of classroom-based education. Firstly, students develop faster socially by using this kind of education. Advocates of this believe that it is in the classroom that students make friends and learn how to interact with their peers.  This is often not possible for people who study by remote education for the simple reason that they tend to gain information and acquire knowledge at their own home. Another advantage of this is that students study efficiently. They will have opportunities to ask their teachers in face-to-face classroom if some academic issues confusing them. Furthermore, they can discuss methodologies and approaches with their peers, which may have a positive effect on how they learn. In conclusion , though there are some advantages of distance education, I think classroom-based education is better and should not be replaced, However, if we can use remote education in a more appropriate way, it is still not unrealistic for this kind of education to be adecent complement of general education. 7 Some people think that newspapers are the best source of news. Others, however, believe that news is presented better on television or the Internet. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion. The importance of news has been widely recognized in terms of its helpfulness in setting correct strategies for daily routines, commercial activities and even the national security. Newspaper once played dominantly in spreading of information, but its shine is dimmed by the current technological advancement in communication because it supplies people many more optional channels when they intend to learn. In this essay, a comparison is to be given between printed news and news broadcasted on other media. Newspaper is advantageous in news spreading for many obvious reasons. Updated every day, it keeps the news latest and fresh. For instance, the headlines constantly keep readers well-informed about domestic and international events. Furthermore, when the news is printed on papers, it will be very portable, and then audience can decide under what circumstances to read, such as at the breakfast table in the dinning room or in the train on a business trip, or even in office during the break of busy work. Finally, the newspaper wins readers in a great number by its affordable price. In the price of cents, everyone is likely to grasp a single share from the stands when they wander along the street. However, newspaper is becoming less attractive in the faces of other media. The latest model of cell phone enables its users to read news updated every minute. Comparing the news in hard copy, the TV broadcasts news with videos and pictures and then vivid description provide a more pleasant experience to learn. But the strongest opponent is internet, it not only allows everyone to access and browse news without any charge. Countless websites are established to supply free news nowadays, but also save people time to subscribe. But all of these electronic devices are only available when the power is on. Without the backup of electricity, they hardly function well. In conclusion, news published in various forms is advantageous in different ways-speed, convenience and cost. They actually compensate each other well when we take a comprehensive use. So it is hard to name which type is absolutely ideal among those options when people collect information. Audiences can enjoy the news according to their personal preferences. 8 Detailed descriptions of crimes in the media should be strictly controlled. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Detective and reasoning programs have never lost popularity among people since they are not only exciting but also mysterious. However, some people claim that detailed description of crimes on newspaper and TV can affect the society adversely, as a result, they should be restricted on media. I could not agree more with this statement. Admittedly, detailed description of crime on mass media is beneficial for public to get a better understand of crime and law. Being shown of all kinds of crimes and means on screens, people can have knowledge of how criminals commit crimes and what kinds of people are usually aimed at. In this way, citizens, especially those single women and underage children, can remind themselves and take actions to protect from being robbed or stolen. On the other hand, apart from the function of vigilance, people can also benefit from reports from various medium, the public can acquire a better ability in distinguishing right from wrong, virtue from immorality and thus take responsibility of their own behaviors. Not with understanding all these merits mentioned above, the disadvantages of showing detailed description of crimes still overweigh its advantages. To begin with, also it acts as a positive role in disseminating the knowledge of crime and law, it also provides the possibility to teach those potential criminals how to commit a crime and then escape from punishment. In order to cater to the audiences’ desire for excitement and entertainment, a majority of programs provides detailed description of crime and violence to the public, which will definitely leads to bad consequences on society. What is more, violence and crime on mass media will affect youngsters adversely. Impulsive and easily influenced, teenagers are apt to go astray if they are overwhelmed with this kind of programs all the day. More alarmingly, at present, some crimes and criminals are glorified by directors who always want to capture eyes of the public and obtain larger profits. Criminals are often portrayed as highly capable and cool guys on the wrong side of the law. Some of them even excite admiration from the young. No wonder the rate of juvenile delinquency is growing rapidly in the past decades. Consequently, strict censorship should be implemented regarding the contents of the television programs and other forms of media. Also, given the fact that a growing number of media exaggerate and make up the truth of crime, I suggest the significant events should only be reported by government and mainstream media. 9 Public libraries should only provide books and not waste their limited resources on multimedia materials such as videos or DVDs. To what extent do you agree or disagree? In recent 10 years, with the advent of IT ear, the role of library has changed a a lot. It is no longer stricted to the traditional function of lending books, but become a synthesis of educational functions. Some people insist a library should maintain its original function and resist hi-tech materials, while other think that a library should keep in pace with modern technology. Admittedly, books are the main recourses of a library, and helping people reading is the main function of a library. But the 21st century changed the traditional definition of "book". It is not only related to the printed materials, but also expands to a wider range, covering visual, audio publications, e-books, essay data bases, and websites recourses. In such an occasion, libraries have to reform its old functions, and induce new functions. Once a library become modern, it would have the ability to display all educational recourses to the public. Otherwise, it might fade out from our horizon and even become a museum. Moreover, it is the public's demand that dominates the reformation of a library. Nowadays, people ask more. They are no longer satisfied with a simple function in a library, and on the contrast, they would like to enjoy a cup of coffee as well. Therefore, libraries have to add cafe, internet bar and video room to its original design. Overall, the money spent on the relatively expensive hi-tech media would arm a library and make it more educational, as well as attractive. What it invests would definitely result in a huge return. On the other hand, some people who assert the modernization of a library is meaningless think suggest that more money be used in enhancing book capacities. To begin with, they think that a library's main function is to provide books, rather than hi-tech media. Moreover, the expensive but useless hi-tech materials would take up a large proportion of a library's budget, thus result in a waste. But actually, a lot of hi-tech materials are well welcomed by readers. All things considered, i have reasons to believe that developing hi-tech media in a library is a right choice. A library should allocate a certain part of money on updating hi-tech materials, as well as books 10 Some people think that it is more important for a building to serve a purpose than to look beautiful. To what extent do you agree or disagree? In the modern world, buildings are always built in different ways. Some practical building engineers concentrate on building’s functions, whereas some are focus on their good looking. And both views will be discussed in this essay. Construction built for a special propose suit people’s needs in terms of weather problems. For example , some of them use double windows which can reduce the heat loss in order to keep warm inside in cold winter. In addition, some special sharp buildings are earthquake-resistant which construct in earthquakes-prone regions. Specifically, the U sharp buildings, with the special physical design, can resist earthquakes up to level five even seven. These functions serve residents well, providing them security, convenience, comfort etc. However, these buildings could be average-looking. If all building were built in this way, people prone to get tired from them, which means damages to a city’s appearance.
