TodaywecelebratethemysteryofAmericanrenewal.Thisceremonyisheldinthedepthofwinter,butbythewordsweeakandthefacesweshowtheworld,weforcethering.Aringrebornintheworld'soldestdemocracy,thatbringsforththevisionandcouragetoreinventAmerica.WhenourfoundersboldlydeclaredAmerica'sindependencetotheworld,andourpurposestotheAlmighty,theyknewthatAmerica,toendure,wouldhavetochange.Notchangeforchangesake,butchangetopreserveAmerica'sideals:life,liberty,thepursuitofhaine.
Thoughwemarchtothemusicofourtime,ourmiionistimele.EachgenerationofAmerican'smustdefinewhatitmeatobeanAmerican.Onbehalfofournation,Isalutemypredeceor,PresidentBush,forhishalf-centuryofservicetoAmerica,andIthankthemillioofmenandwomenwhosesteadfastneandsacrificetriumphedoverdepreion,fascismandcommunism.
Today,agenerationraisedintheshadowsoftheColdWaraumesnewreoibilitiesinaworldwarmedbythesuhineoffreedom,butthreatenedstillbyancienthatredsandnewplagues.Raisedinunrivalledproerity,weinheritaneconomythatisstilltheworld'sstrongest,butisweakenedbybusinefailures,stagnantwages,increasinginequality,anddeepdivisioamongourownpeople.
WhenGeorgeWashingtonfirsttooktheoathIhavejustsworntouphold,newstravelledslowlyacrothelandbyhorseback,andacrotheoceanbyboat.Nowthesightsandsoundsofthisceremonyarebroadcastitantaneouslytobillioaroundtheworld.Communicatioandcommerceareglobal.Investmentismobile.Technologyisalmostmagical,andambitionforabetterlifeisnowuniversal.
WeearnourlivelihoodinAmericatodayinpeacefulcompetitionwithpeopleallacrotheEarth.Profoundandpowerfulforcesareshakingandremakingourworld,andtheurgentquestionofourtimeiswhetherwecanmakechangeourfriendandnotourenemy.ThisnewworldhasalreadyenrichedthelivesofmillioofAmericawhoareabletocompeteandwininit.Butwhenmostpeopleareworkingharderforle,whenotherscaotworkatall,whenthecostofhealthcaredevastatesfamiliesandthreatetobankruptourenterprises,greatandsmall;whenthefearofcrimerolawabidingcitizeoftheirfreedom;andwhenmillioo
