Shower with a friend.” Now, Wuhan University has come up with another system for the campus bathhouse. It charges students for the amount of time in a shower. Before entering the bathhouse, students pay for the amount of time they want in the shower with cash or their student ID card. The clock starts ticking the minute the tape is turned on. It pauses when a button is pressed for soap. An integrated circuit(IC) card reader at each tap shows the time. No money, no water. The benefits of the new system can be seen with the old system, which charged 1 Yuan for each person regardless of time in the shower. The university used about 320 tones of water daily under the old system, but only 160 tons now. Many students use the new system but opinions on it are divided. Some students say it is bad because bathing had become a sort of race. Many people using it for the first time are not sure how long they need to shower. Some might be embarrassed if their time is up and they’re still covered in soap. They have to ask the bathhouse worker to help them buy extra time. “It’s a flaw in the system that you can not buy extra time on the ID card,” said Ren, a freshman in Wuhan University. The university is also considering some students’ suggestions that they be allowed to pay after they’ve finished the shower. Not surprisingly, some are complaining about losing the hour shower. But many students say the move helps them develop a water-saving sense. Without the time limits, most students tended to shower for 30 to an hour in the bathhouse. Some even used the hot water to wash their clothes. “In my experience, 10-20 minutes is enough,” said Dai Zhihua, a third-year student who usually takes 8 minutes. A similar system has been installed in other universities. Shanghai Normal University introduced it at its Fengxiang Campus in September. The bathing fee there is 0.2 Yuan per minute. One male student responded by setting a record with a two-minute shower. 25.The underline word “flaw” (Paragraph3) most probably means______. And you do not have to spend a lot of money to feed them. 36 One male and two females will produce in a year as many as fifty more rabbits. That is enough to provide a good supply of meat for a family. 37 Rabbit houses are easy to make with wood and wire fencing material. They do not have to be very big. But each rabbit must have its own little room in the house. This is very important. Each room should be about 75 centimeters wide, 60 centimeters high and one meter deep. Fencing is used for the sides and floor of the rabbit house. The holes in the wire fencing should be about one centimeter square. 38 This keeps the rabbit house clean and dry. Rabbits need a lot of fresh air and sunlight. Cover the sides of the rabbit house only to protect it from rain. 39 Feeding containers hung on the outside of the house let the rabbits eat whenever they want. They simply pull the grass and leaves through the holes in the wire fence. Each room should have fresh water. The water containers should be heavy so the rabbits cannot turn them over. 40 One month after mating, female rabbits give birth to about eight babies. In two months, a baby rabbit should weigh about two kilograms. This is big enough to make a meal for a small family. A. Rabbits eat mostly grass and leaves. B. Rabbits are also valuable for their fur. C. Or you can tie the containers to the wire. D. Rabbit meat is high in protein and low in fat. E. Many people enjoy keeping rabbits as friendly pets. F. Then they began to develop the Solar Roadway. The Solar Roadway is an intelligent road that provides clean renewable energy using power from the sun while providing safer driving conditions, along with power and data delivery. They predict that the Solar Roadway will pay for itself through the generation of electricity along with other forms of income and that the same money that is being used to build and resurface current roads can be used to build the Solar Roadways. Each Solar Road Panel measures roughly 4 meters by 4 meters and contains a microprocessor (微处理器) that monitors and controls the panel, while communicating with neighboring panels and the vehicles traveling overhead. The inventors suggest that this provides a communications device every 4 meters on every road which could be used for example to warn drivers of cars which are moving across a centre line and various other speed control problems. The top of the Solar Road panels is made of super-strong glass that would offer vehicles the tractions (抓地力) they need. According to the inventors, the Solar Roadway creates and carries clean renewable electricity and therefore electric vehicles can be recharged at any conveniently located rest stop, or at any business that has paved Solar Road Panels in their parking lots. The inventors say their Solar Roadway has many functions and advantages from main roads to driveways, parking lots, bike paths, sidewalks and runways. The Federal Highway Administration has given Brusaw $100,000 to develop the invention and Brusaw hopes to build a smart-road parking lot in the coming spring . 24. In the inventors’ opinion, the Solar Roadway _____. A. is too expensive to build at present B. will bring them a large sum of money C. can provide as many data as present computers D. costs no more money than current roads 25. The underlined word “they” in Paragraph 2 refers to _____. A. the panels B. the vehicles C. the researchers D. the inventors 26. It can be inferred from the text that _____. A. the Solar Roadway is not available for gas-powered cars B. $100,000 is only enough to build a smart-road parking lot C. the Solar Roadway has already been put into use D. future electric vehicles can be charged anytime and anywhere 27. What can be the best title for the text? A. The influence the Solar Roadway has on people B. The great changes on the roadway C. Solar-powered smart road of the future D. The Solar Road — a much faster road B Ask most people how they define the American Dream and chances are they’ll say, “Success.” The dream of individual opportunity has been home in American since Europeans discovered a “new world” in the Western Hemisphere. Early immigrants like Hector St. Jean de Crevecoeur praised highly the freedom and opportunity to be found in this new land. His glowing descriptions of a classless society where anyone could attain success through honesty and hard work fired the imaginations of many European readers: in Letters from an American Farmer (1782) he wrote. “We are all excited at the spirit of an industry which is unfettered (无拘无束的) and unlimited, because each person works for himself … We have no princes, for whom we toil (干苦力活),starve, and bleed: we are the most perfect society now existing in the world.” The promise of a land where “the rewards of a man’s industry follow with equal steps the progress of his labor” drew poor immigrants from Europe and fueled national expansion into the western territories. We Americans have heard many illustrations of the American success stories. There’s Benjamin Franklin, the very model of the self-educated, self-made man, who rose from modest origins to become a well-known scientist, philosopher, and statesman. In the nineteenth century, Horatio Alger, a writer of fiction for young boys, became American’s best-selling author with rags-to-riches tales. The conception of success haunts us: we spend million every year reading about the rich and famous, learning how to “make a fortune in real estate with no money down,” and “dressing for success.” The myth of success has even affected our personal relationships: today it’s as important to be “successful” in marriage or parenthoods as it is to come out on top in business. But dreams easily turn into nightmares. Every American who hopes to “make it” also knows the fear of failure, because the myth of success inevitably implies comparison between the haves and the have-nots, the stars and the anonymous crowd. Under pressure of the myth, we become indulged in status symbols: we try to live in the “right” neighborhoods, wear the “right” clothes, eat the “right” foods. These symbols of distinction assure us and others that we believe strongly in the fundamental equality of all, yet work as hard as we can to separate ourselves from our fellow citizens. 28. What is the essence of the American Dream according to Crevecoeur? A. People can fully enjoy individual freedom. B. People who are honest and work hard can succeed. C. People are free from exploitation and oppression. D. People are free to develop their power of imagination. 29. By saying “the rewards of a man’s industry follow with equal steps the progress of his labor” (Para. 1), the author means _____. A. laborious work ensures the growth of an industry B. a company’s success depends on its employees’ effort C. the more hard-working one is, the bigger his returns D. a man’s business should be developed step by step 30. The characters described in Horatio Alger’s novels are people who _______. A. succeed in real estate investment B. became wealthy after starting life very poor C. earned enormous fortunes by chance D. became famous despite their modest origins 31. What is the contradiction of American culture according to the author? A. The American road to success is full of nightmares. B. Status symbols are not a real indicator of a person’s wealth. C. What Americans chase is not often consistent with their beliefs. D. The American Dream is nothing but an empty dream. 家长签字:___________________ 签字日期:___________________ 第四天英语作业 1.根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填人空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Writing a news article is different from writing other articles or informational pieces, because news articles present information in a specific way. 36 And additionally you can exercise your writing skills and convey information clearly and concisely. 1 .Start with the lead. 37 News articles begin with a leading sentence that is meant to grab the readers' attention and interest them. Talks went smoothly but differences remained. So Martin Bayer himself, the CEO of the German Company, decided to come to Moscow to head the talks. Besides caring about his business, the CEO wanted to go to Russia to hunt bears. Martin Bayer was one of the greatest hunters of our time (and the Russians knew about it). He went to the Sahara more than hundred times and hunted lions, crocodiles; he hunted polar bears in the North Pole and tigers in the rain forests of India. But he had never hunted Russian bears. So the Russians decided to organize a bear hunt for Mr. Bayer to sweeten the talks. This wasn't a simple task. Some people in the west still believe that bears may be found and seen everywhere in Russian cities just like squirrels may be seen in our back yards. This is not true. The closest place one may find bears in the wild is maybe 2,500 miles away from Moscow. However, a solution was quickly found. The Russian businessmen went to Moscow Circus(马戏团)and for $2,000 bought a very old bear. This bear used to amuse and amaze audiences in many countries for 30 years, but got and looked too old, and was retired. “Be careful, the Russian bears are very dangerous, and frightening,” they told to Mr. Bayer. “If compared to the Russian bears, your African lions are nothing more than harmless cats.” The bear was brought to a forest 50 miles from Moscow and was left there. Mr. Bayer was told that bears were plentiful in that forest and that many cattle and even people had been eaten in the surrounding villages. Meanwhile, an 18-year old female drove through the forest on a motorcycle and suddenly saw a bear (no bears had been seen in those places for 200 years). She was frightened, fell, left her helmet and her motorcycle and ran away. Mr. Bayer was excited and ready to hunt. This could become the most successful part of his extraordinary hunting experience. The next moment Mr. Bayer saw a bear in a helmet driving on a motorcycle through the forest in front of him. The bear had a happy expression on his face, as he was doing something he had been doing in the circus for 30 years: circling on a motorcycle! Mr. Bayer lives in a private mental institution near Hamburg happily ever after. The equipment was never sold to Russia. It was sold to Iraq instead. 21. Why did the Russians invite Mr. Bayer to hunt bears? A. Russian bears are famous for their cruelty. B. They managed to find a bear for hunting. C. They expected the trade to be successful. D. There was a bear in Moscow Circus. 22. Why did the Russians say “Be careful, the Russian bears are very dangerous, and frightening”? A. To tell Mr. Bayer that many people had been killed by bears. B. To make Mr. Bayer feel the hunting really challenging. C. To warn Mr. Bayer to mind his safety while hunting. D. To tell Mr. Bayer that the bear is really dangerous. 23. We can infer from the last paragraph that __________. A. Mr. Bayer has gone mad B. the bear injured him badly C. he has worked in a mental institution since then D. the trade has gone smoothly between Russian and Iraq 2.阅读下面材料,在空白处填入适当的内容(不多于3个单词)或括号内单词的正确形式。 Owls are birds that sleep during the day and hunt __61__ night. It was probably the first thing we did together, long before we would share our lives. We grew up in a small Oregon mountain community where dances were held almost every Saturday night. Dar was seventeen, and l was thirteen, when we first danced. He was one of the best dancers on the floor, and so was I. We always jitterbugged. No slow dancing for us; nothing remotely romantic. Our fathers would stand along the wall and watch. Every once in a while, Dar’s dad would smile a little and say, to no one in particular, but my dad could hear, “Boy, my kid can sure dance.” My dad never blinked an eye; he acted like he’d never heard. But a while later he would say, to no one in particular, “That girl of mine can sure dance.” Our dancing together stopped for five years while Dar was in the South Pacific in World War II. When we met again, Dar was twenty-two, and l was eighteen. We began to date and dance again. We were as good together as we remembered, and this time we added slow dancing. For us, life is a dance, a movement of rhythms, directions, stumbles, missteps, at times slow and precise, or fast and wild and joyous. We did all the steps. Two nights before Dar died, the family were with us. We all ate dinner together, and Dar sat with us. He hadn’t been able to eat for several days. After dinner, I put on a Nat King Cole tape. Dar took me in his arms, weak as he was, and we danced and smiled. No tears for us. We were doing what we had loved to do for more than fifty years. It was our last dance-forever unforgettable.1 wouldn’t have missed it for the world. 1. The author first danced with Dar when_________. Mayflower, the first ship that came over from England to Massachusetts Bay, actually carried more beer than water. In fact the Founding Fathers of America liked a drink-Samuel Adams was a partner in his father’s brewery, and Thomas Jefferson was famous for importing European wines. Early Americans took a healthful small drink for breakfast, whiskey was a typical lunchtime drink, ale (麦芽酒) accompanied supper and the day ended with another drink called nightcap. Most Americans in 1790 consumed an average of 5.8 gallons of pure alcohol a year. In 1830, consumption reached 7.1 gallons a year and alcoholism was starting to have a serious influence on communities. Women and children might be in physical danger if the man of the house began drinking. If he became ill or lost his job through drinking, there was no social safety net to support or protect his family. Eventually, alcoholism was being treated as a disease. By the late 19th Century, support for Prohibition, banning the manufacture and sale of alcohol, was powerful. The first arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol was in 1897. On 16 January 1919, Prohibition was set into law. However, by the 1930s when American economy was experiencing a hard time it was widely believed that making alcohol legal again would provide badly-needed jobs and taxes. So in February of 1933, Prohibition was ended. Still, Prohibition had a great influence on alcohol drinking in this country. In 1955, Americans drank an average of 2.3 gallons of pure alcohol a year. The Prohibition movement was still quite strong after Prohibition ended and it led to a lot of local prohibition on alcohol. The American presidency has done a lot to rehabilitate alcohol and make it respectable again. Presidents Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, Ronald Reagan and Barack Obama can all be seen on film drinking socially and making official toasts with international celebrities. 32. Which is TRUE about the Puritans according to the passage? A. Their ancestors came to America to sell alcohol. B. They founded the breweries in European countries. C. They had a habit of alcohol drinking. D. They were the major importer of alcohol. 33. In what way was an alcoholic’s family affected by alcoholism? A. His family couldn’t afford the drink. B. His family might suffer financially. C. His wife and children might become ill. D. His family might not be treated equally. 34. What can be learned about Prohibition in America? A. It came into law in the 19th century. B. It discouraged alcohol drinking. C. Its effect disappeared after its removal. D. It failed to forbid drunk driving. 35. The passage mainly talks about ________. A. the brief history of alcohol drinking in America B. American presidents’ affection for alcohol drinking C. the Puritans’ bad reputation in America D. the reasons why Prohibition came into law 第九天英语作业 1. 阅读理解 Since the beginning of time never has there been another with my mind, my heart, my eyes, my ears, my hands, my mouth. None that came before, none that live today, and none that come tomorrow can walk and talk and move and think exactly like me. I’m a unique creature. Vain attempts to imitate others no longer will I make. Instead will I place my uniqueness on display in the market place. I will begin now to highlight my differences; hide my similarities. I am rare, and therefore I am valuable. I am the end product of thousands of years of evolution; therefore, I am better equipped in both mind and body than all the emperors and wise men before me. But my skills, my mind, my heart, and my body will weaken, rot, and die for fear that I put them to good use. I have unlimited potential. Only a tiny part of my brain do I employ; only a small amount of my muscle do I apply. So never again will I be satisfied with yesterday's accomplishments nor will I lose myself, anymore, in self-praise for deeds which in reality are too small to even acknowledge. I can accomplish far more than I have, and I will. I am not on this earth by chance. I am here for a purpose and that purpose is to grow into a mountain, not to shrink to a grain of sand. Henceforth(从今往后) will I apply all my efforts to become the highest mountain of all and I will strain my potential until it cries for mercy. I will increase my knowledge of mankind, myself, and the goods I sell. I will practice, and improve, and polish the words I speak to multiply my sales, for this is the foundation on which I will build my career. Also will I seek constantly to improve my manners and graces, for they are the sugar to which all are attracted. I have been given eyes to see and a mind to think and now I know a great secret of life that all my problems, discouragements, and heartaches are, in truth, great opportunities in disguise. I am nature’s greatest miracle. And nature knows not defeat. Eventually, she achieves victory and so will I, and with each victory the next struggle becomes less difficult. 24. This is where Mind Mapping can help you. Mind Mapping is a useful technique that helps you learn more effectively, improves the way that you record information, and supports and enhances creative problem solving. By using Mind Maps, you can quickly identify and understand the structure of a subject. You can see the way that pieces of information fit together, as well as recording the raw facts contained in normal notes. 36 , as they help your mind recall and review. Popularized by Tony Buzan, Mind Maps abandon the list format of conventional note taking. They do this in favor of a two-dimensional structure. A good Mind Map shows the 'shape' of the subject, the relative importance of individual points, and the way in which facts relate to one another. 37 . 1. Write the title of the subject you're exploring in the center of the page, and draw a circle around it. 2. As you come across major subdivisions or subheadings of the topic (or important facts that relate to the subject) draw lines out from this circle. Label these lines with these subdivisions or subheadings. 3. As you "burrow" into (挖掘) the subject and uncover another level of information (further subheadings, or individual facts) belonging to the subheadings, draw these as lines linked to the subheading lines. 4. 38 . 5. As you come across new information, link it in to the Mind Map appropriately. 39 . Sub-topics and facts will branch off these, like branches and twigs from the trunk of a tree. You don't need to worry about the structure you produce, as this will evolve of its own accord. 40 . If you do any form of research or note taking, try experimenting with Mind Maps. You will find them surprisingly effective! A. To draw a Mind Map, follow these steps: B. Mind Mapping is an extremely effective method of taking notes. C. They help you to associate ideas and make connections that you might not otherwise make. D. A complete Mind Map may have main topic lines radiating in all directions from the center. E. Then, for individual facts or ideas, draw lines out from the appropriate heading line and label them. F. More than this, Mind Maps help you remember information G. When created using colors and images or drawings, a Mind Map can even resemble a work of art! 3. Dear Bob, Thank you for your last letter asked about our library. Their arrival celebrated the bicentenary(二百周年) of Charles Dickens’s birth. This Grip was the third of the Tower ravens to be named after the novelist’s own pet bird. One of his predecessors(前辈) was resident during World War Two; he and his mate Mabel were the only ravens to survive a bombing attack on the Tower. Dickens’s Grip, who had an impressive vocabulary, appears as a character in the author’s fifth novel, Barnaby Rudge. On 28 January 1841, Dickens wrote to his friend George Cattermole: “my notion is to have [Barnaby] always in company with a pet raven, who is immeasurably more knowing than himself. To this end I have been studying my bird, and think I could make a very distinctive character of him.” Unfortunately, just a few weeks after Dickens wrote that letter, Grip died, probably as a result of having stolen and eaten paint some months earlier. The bird had developed a strange habit – tearing sections off painted surfaces (including the family's carriage) and even drinking a quantity of white paint out of a tin. Dickens mourned his loss and wrote a humorous letter to his friend, the illustrator Daniel Maclise, about the raven’s death. He related how, when Grip began to show signs of sickness, the vet was called and “administered a powerful dose of castor(蓖麻) oil”. Initially this seemed to have a positive effect and the author was thrilled to see Grip restored to his usual personality when he bit the coachman (who was used to the raven and took it in good humor). The following morning, Grip was able to eat “some warm porridge”, but his recovery was short lived. As Dickens wrote to Maclise, “On the clock striking twelve he appeared slightly upset, but soon recovered, walking twice or thrice along the coach-house, stopped to bark, exclaimed ‘Hello old girl’ (his favorite expression) and died. He behaved throughout with a decent manner, which cannot be too much admired... The children seem rather glad of it. He bit their ankles. But that was play.” 32. Which of the following is right about Dickens’s pet Grip? A. he liked painting a lot. B. he could speak English fluently. C. he was quite ill before his death. D. he and Mabel survived a bombing attack. 33. Why did Dickens study his bird Grip? A. Because the bird was very strange looking. B. Because Dickens liked the bird immeasurably. C. Because Barnaby needs a companion who was always with him. D. Because Dickens wanted to base one character of his novel on him. 34. What caused the death of Dickens’s Grip? A. His old age. B. His strange diet. C. The killing of the coachman. D. His bad habit of biting people. 35. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage? A. A bird in a novel. B. The writer’s bird. C. The death of a bird. D. Dickens and his bird Listening to music while you drive can improve your speed and ability to get away from accidents, according to Australian psychologists(心理学家). But turning your car radio up to full volume could probably make you end up in an accident. The performance of difficult tasks can be affected if people are subjected to loud noise. The experience of pulling up at traffic lights alongside cars with loud music made some psychologists in the University of Sydney look into whether loud music has something to do with driving. The psychologists invited 60 men and women aged between 20 and 28 as subjects and tested them on almost the same driving tasks under three noise conditions: silence、rock music played at a gentle 55 decibels(分贝) and the same music at 85 decibels. For 10 minutes the subjects sat in front of a screen operating a simple machine like a car. They had to track a moving disk on screen, respond to traffic signals changing color and brake(刹车)in response to arrows that appeared without warning. On the tracking task. there was no difference in performance under the three noise conditions. But under both the loud and quiet music conditions. the performers “braked” at a red light about 50 milliseconds sooner than they did when there was no rock music at all. That could mean a reduction in braking distance of a couple of meters actually. the difference between life and death for a pedestrian(行人). When it came to the arrows that appeared across the visual field. the psychologists found that when the music was quiet. people responded faster to objects in their central field of sight by about 50 milliseconds. For the people listening at 85 decibels. response times dropped by a further 50 milliseconds—a whole tenth of second faster than those “driving” with no music. “But there’s a trade-off.” the psychologists told the European Congress of Psychology. “They lose the ability to look around the whole situation effectively. ” In responding to objects that suddenly appeared. people subjected to 85—decibel rock music were around 100 milliseconds slower than both the other groups. Since some accident—such as children running into the road—take place without any notice. drivers listening to loud music must be less safe as a result. 25. Which of the following is the best way to make driving safer? A. Loud music. B. Quiet music. C. Silence. D. Heavy metal music. 26. What does the phrase “the pulling up” in paragraph two mean? A. Stopping. B. Giving somebody a lift. C. Putting up with. D. Driving. 27. Where did the researchers do the experiment? A. At crossroads. B. At a police traffic station. C. In a crowed street. D. Under the same conditions as those of the streets. 28. Which of the following is NOT true of loud music? A. It helped the performers to brake sooner at red lights. B. It helped the performers to be more careful. C. It helped the performers to respond faster to objects stepping in the way. D. It can do more good than harm to drivers. 2. One day, little Tony went to a shopping center with his parent. Lives There is no denying that safety plays an important part in our daily life. Recently our school has carried out a program aimed at making our campus a safe place to stay on. As we all know, as a student,we spend most of our time staying on campus, so it is very necessary for us to obey the school rules. To protect ourselves from being hurt, we shouldn’t chase each other in the hallway and in the school yard after class; we should keep in order when on the stairs; Even when we are doing sports, we should attach importance to the safety and avoid being hurt; Sometimes we are likely to get into trouble with our classmates. Once coming into conflict, we ought to remain calm and avoid any form of fighting, because it may only bring suffering and pain to us mentally and physically. In my opinion, I consider this program as indeed a good practice, which will make us aware that safety should always come first in our daily life. We parents should know first aid in order to deal with common injuries who at which may happen to your children. When a person is bite by an animal, wash the wound with cold our bitten running water before he is taken to see a doctor. When a person is burnt, wash and cool the area of the skin under the cold tap for a while. Then put a piece of dry clean cloth over the burn. If a person is bad burnt, take him to the doctor. If a person cut his finger, clean it and put a the badly cuts piece of paper round the cut. Everybody should know some first aid in order not to save other people’s life. Only by strengthening our security awareness, can we make ourselves safe and sound on campus. That is so much for my idea about this activity. Thank you for listening.
