Rent a sea kayak (皮划艇) (100 baht, which is around ,2 an hour) and go around the corner to Than Morakot (the Emerald Cave), a winding cave that opens up to a bay walled by thick leaves and often visited by groups of monkeys. It is very inspiring, but to fully appreciate it, be sure to prepare it, be sure to prepare a light to avoid knocking into cave walls and other kayaks. To avoid being crowded, make the trip in the late afternoon. Where to eat The Ko Yao Viewpoint Restaurant is the best place for tourists. Drink the sweet cocktails in favour of an icy Chang beer and enjoy the last rays of the bay. I had never talked with a botanist before, and I found him very interesting. I sat there absorbed and listened while he spoke of unusual plants and his experiments (he even told me astonishing facts about the simple potato). I had a small indoor garden of my own—and he was good enough to tell me how to solve some of my problems. As I said, we were at a dinner party. There must have been a dozen other guests, but I broke an important rule of politeness. I ignored everyone else and talked for hours to the botanist. Midnight came. I said good night to everyone and departed. The botanist then turned to our host and said many nice things about me, including that I was a “most interesting conversationalist”. An interesting conversationalist? I had said hardly anything at all. I couldn’t have said anything if I had wanted to without changing the subject, for I didn’t know any more about plants than I knew about sharks. But I had done this one thing; I had listened carefully. I listened because I was really interested. And he felt it. Naturally that pleased him. That kind of listening is one of the best ways to show respect to others, and it makes them feel great too. “Few human beings,” wrote Jack Woodford in Strangers in Love, “can resist the sweet effect of rapt attention.” I went even further than that. I was “sincere in my admiration and generous in my praise”. I told him that I had been hugely entertained and instructed. I told him I wished I had his knowledge. I told him that I should love to wander the fields with him. What’s more, it was all true. And so I had him thinking of me as a good conversationalist when, in reality, I had only been a good listener and had encouraged him to talk. 24. From Paragraph 1, we can learn that the writer__________. A. was deeply moved by the botanist’s talk B. was amazed by what he was hearing C. was not in a comfortable situation D. behaved politely and properly 25. Which of the following does the writer describe as a rule of politeness at dinner parties? A. Avoiding discussions about politics and religion. B. Listening carefully to what another guest says. C. Arriving and leaving at the appropriate time. D. Giving attention to all those in attendance. 26. The underlined expression “rapt attention” in Paragraph 4 is closest in the meaning to__________. A. full understanding B. strong interest C. great uncertainty D. little curiosity 27. According to the writer, which of the following is an important characteristic of a good conversationalist? A. Listening attentively and encouraging the other side to continue. B. Encouraging the other side by sharing his/her own opinions. C. Promising a future meeting for more communication. D. Expressing respect by nodding his/her head. C The World Health Organization warns that millions of people are dying every year from indoor air pollution. The WHO finds that poor cooking, heating and lighting technologies are killing millions of people each year. Indoor air pollution results from the use of dangerous fuels and cook-stoves in the home. WHO experts note some new, safe and low-cost technologies that could help are already available. In India, you can buy an induction (电磁) stove for about $ 8.00. And in Africa you can buy a solar lamp for less than $ 1. 00. But, this, the agency says, is just a start. The importance of health in developing countries D The time-honored lamp and lantern business in Pingyao county, Shanxi province was popular back when there were large festivities or celebrations and corporations, institutions and government offices needed lanterns to decorate their halls and streets. Then the central government started calling for budget cuts, and no unnecessary celebrations, so the industry was staring at a depressed market and a number of enterprises just shut down and the Pingyao faced a challenge. But, now it is on an innovative (创新的) path that has led to success and the market downturn has passed and it is seeing a second peak. It has stopped using the mass production lines that targeted big festivals and has turned instead to traditional lantern arts and culture and brought in new technology and developed new products to meet diverse demands from customers all across the country. Li Xiaoqian, head of one shop, says that they have turned from single-product groups to arts and crafts and are “making culture” instead of just products. Previously, they only catered (迎合) to Shanxi culture, but now they embrace Fujian, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Taiwan cultures as well and even got the invitation from the city of Taichung, Taiwan to take part in 2015 lantern show during Spring Festival there. And, Li goes on, even though this may not bring in big profits, it could be a good way to increase their influence through cultural exchanges. In their research, they also discovered a trend among museums and tourist spots that valued Chinese civilization and culture so they considered combining the traditional lantern business with tourism as another pathway and are now sorting through all kinds of historical materials and preparing for indoor exhibitions by cooperating with museums and exhibition centers. So, it looks as if, in the battle for the market, this crafts shop has finally come out a winner. 32. The lamp and lantern industry declined after __________. Which is the main factor in Li’s crafts shop winning the competition? A. Their technique. B. Their talent. C. Their creativity. D. Their devotion. 35. One of the purposes of the news story is probably__________. A. to provide an example for other businesses to follow B. to ask more people to take part in 2015 lantern show C. to introduce a good lamp and lantern shop to readers D. to call for a yet more booming market in the business 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余 选项。,如果所用的答题卡没有E、F、G选项~则选E涂A、B~选F涂A、C~选G涂A、 D。, Making Peace with Your Parents As a teen, you’re going through big changes physically and mentally. Your interests are expanding. 36 Here is the challenge: Kids need to explore the world in new ways, and parents need to protect them from the dangers that are out in that world. These conflicts can easily set off fireworks in otherwise calm houses. Sometimes conflicts can’t be avoided. But by paying attention to the building blocks of successful relationships, you can work towards making home a happy and healthy place for you and your parents. For instance, try to find a time to talk when your parents are not angry, tired, distracted, or hungry. A good time to talk is when you’re all relaxed. Timing is everything. If the conversation begins to turn into an argument, you’d better calmly and coolly ask to stop the conversation — for now. 37 Listen to what your parents are saying, and repeat it back to them. This shows them that you’re listening. 38 Respect is the building block of good communication. People who respect each other and care about each others’ feelings can disagree without things getting ugly. 39 How do you build trust? Trust comes by actually doing what you say you’re going to do. Some teens find that doing fun activities with their parents can improve their relationships. Sometimes we forget that parents are more than rule-makers — they’re interesting people who like to watch movies, and go shopping — just like their teenagers! What do you do if you are trying your best, but your relationship with your parents continues to be rocky? 40 You can find supportive adults, such as a teacher or a coach, who can lend an ear. Remember you can only change your own behavior; your parents are the only ones who can change theirs. A. It also gives them a chance to clear things up if you’re not on the same page. B. You can pick it up again when everyone’s more relaxed. C. And then you’ll be able to accept what your parents say. D. Faced with the challenge, children don’t know what to do. E. You are more likely to get along with your parents and have more independence if your parents believe in you. F. And your desire to take control of your own life is growing. G. You may consider seeking outside help. When traveling around the world, I came across a beautiful town called Trancoso in Brazil. Let me tell you about my experience in the Young Elephant Training Center in Thailand, which is very impressive. In the center, when an elephant is born, he or she remains with the mother for the first three years of life. Then, In July of the year of the youngster’s third birthday, it’s off to school. Just like us humans, the mother elephant may not want her baby to leave, and the little one may be reluctant to go to school, but it has to be done. The mother must return to her own work routine and the “baby” must be educated for his future career. The elephant school semester runs from June until February the following year, and the young pupil will go to school five days a week.
