AmericanclothingcultureInmanyregionsoftheworld,peopleweartraditionalcostumesatfestivalsorholidays,andsometimesmoreregularly.Americans,however,donothavedistinctivefolkattirewithalongtradition.ExceptforthevariedandcharacteristicclothingofNativeAmericanpeoples,dressintheUnitedStateshasrarelybeenspecifictoacertainregionorbasedonthecarefulpreservationofdecorativepatternsandcrafts.AmericandressisderivedfromthefabricsandfashionsoftheEuropeanswhobegancolonizingthecountryinthe17thcentury.Earlysettlersincorporatedsomeoftheformswornbyindigenouspeoples,suchasmoccasinsandgarmentsmadefromanimalskins(BenjaminFranklinisfamousforflauntingaraccooncapwhenhetraveledtoEurope),butingeneral,fashionintheUnitedStatesadaptedandmodifiedEuropeanstyles.DespitethenumberandvarietyofimmigrantsintheUnitedStates,Americanclothinghastendedtobehomogeneous,andattirefromanimmigrant'shomelandwasoftenrapidlyexchangedforAmericanapparel.Americandressisdistinctivebecauseofitscasualness.Americanstyleinthe20thcenturyisrecognizablymoreinformalthaninEurope,andforitsfashionsourcesitismoredependentonwhatpeopleonthestreetsarewearing.Europeanfashionstaketheircuesfromthetopofthefashionhierarchy,dictatedbytheworld-famoushautecouture(highfashion)housesofParis,France,andrecentlythoseofMilan,Italy,andLondon,England.Parisdesigners,bothtodayandinthepast,havealsodressedwealthyandfashionableAmericans,whocopiedFrenchstyles.AlthoughEuropeandesignsremainasignificantinfluenceonAmericantastes,Americanfashionsmoreoftencomefrompopularsources,suchastheschoolandthestreet,aswellastelevisionandmovies.BluejeansareprobablythesinglemostrepresentativearticleofAmericanclothing.TheywereoriginallyinventedbytailorJacobDavis,whotogetherwithdry-goodssalesmanLeviStrausspatentedtheideain1873asdurableclothingforminers.Bluejeans(alsoknownasdungarees)spreadamongworkersofallkindsinthelate19thandearly20thcenturies,especiallyamongcowboys,farmers,loggers,andrailroadworkers.TheclothingofNativeAmericanswascloselyrelatedtotheenvironmentinwhichtheylivedandtheirreligiousbeliefs.Rangingfromtropicalanddesertregions,towoodlandsandmountains,toArctictundra,NativeAmericansdevelopeddiversestylesofclothing.Inthewarmestregions,littleclothingwasworn.AmongthepeoplesofCalifornia,forexample,menwerenormallynaked,butwomenworesimpleknee-lengthskirts.Inthecoolerregions,moreclothingstylesdeveloped.ThanksForYourListening!
