SCOPE Applicable to soybeans. SAMPLING AND ANALYSIS OF VEGETABLE OIL SOURCE MATERIALS APPARATUS 1. Forced-draft oven—AOCS Specification H 1-39. 2. Aluminum moisture dishes—minimum 30 gauge, approximately 50 × 20 mm with tight-fitting slip-over covers; Sargent- Welch (20 mL WLS 25725-B, 50 mL WLS 25725-D), or equivalent (see Notes, 1). 3. Desiccator—containing an efficient desiccant. Calcium chloride is not satisfactory. See AOCS Specification H 9-87 for alternatives. 4. Boerner sampler or divider—36-pocket size (see Notes, 1). 5. Sieve—20-gauge metal, with round hole perforations 0.32 cm in diameter (see Notes, 2). 6. Airtight sample containers of convenient size. PREPARATION OF TEST SAMPLE 1. Spread the laboratory sample out on the sieve, shake and remove by hand picking all foreign matter that does not go through the sieve. 2. Reduce the cleaned laboratory sample through the Boerner sampler to 113–227 g. Preserve this test sample in airtight containers and use for all subsequent analyses. PROCEDURE 1. Weigh 10 g of the whole beans into a tared moisture dish. 2. Dry in the forced-draft oven at 130 ± 3°C for 3 hr. Remove from the oven, cover immediately, cool in a desiccator to room temperature and weigh. CALCULATIONS 1. Moisture and volatile matter, % = loss in mass, g mass of test portion, g 100× NOTES 1. For test samples with high moisture and volatile content, the use of lightweight, coverless, disposable weighing dishes may give erroneously high results due to test portion loss from splattering during heating. 2.
