10.01.09 two pie charts [TASK1] The charts below show the reasons why people chose to left England and stay there. [TASk2] Some people believe that the charity organizations should give aid to those in greatest need, wherever they live. Some people believe that the charity organisations would better concentrate on helping people who live in own country instead. Discuss both views and give your opinion. View point: Charity organization should help those who are in great need of help, instead of putting the condition or location before it. Reason 1. It is the basic purpose of these charity groups. Reason 2. All the help would make a difference in the world. /The help offered by these groups can make a difference in the future. Under some special circumstances, aid from outside world would be indispensible. e.g: people who live in Africa would appreciate the aid from the international charity organization very much. Common example, under the emergency, like Haiti has been suffering from not only the earthquake but also the cholera. So the Red Cross is trying its best to curve the situation of spreading of the disease. The international community is trying their best to assistant the local government to handle the situation. Opposite view: To offer aids to the local people, the charity organization from the region would have a better chance to do something efficient and effective. The local charity groups would have a better understand of culture and language, these would enable them to work more appropriately. But if the situation is out of control or simple beyond the capacity of any regional group, the outside help and assistance would be considered essential. Promotion: All the charity organizations should join hands in hands to help the people globally. Like the old saying goes, One for all, and all for one. Only in this way, could our world become a better place to live in. 10.01.14 table [TASK1] The table below shows the number of the journeys in England in 2002, the transport type and purpose. [TASk2] In today's world, it is private companies rather than government who pay for and carry out most on scientific research. Do you think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages? Private company, individual groups, big firms, multi-national corporations. Money-driven, profit-making companies, Pros and cons, benefits and drawbacks, positive and negative, the ups and downs, the bright side and darks, the right and wrong. View point Advantages outweigh the disadvantages. The positive effects are far more obvious than the negative effects. Reason 1 It is profit-making firms that have the funds available for the research. Government or official groups may have the fund but it turned out to be insufficient. Reason 2. Beside funds, they also set up special group from managerial teams to monitor and supervise the research process. Example: IBM and Microsoft both have the labs and research centre under the headquarters. The only reason why they do that is that their money-driven nature decides their behavior and everything around it. Genetic fix to Alzheimer, this research is conducted by a private pharmaceutical group whose major product is a medicine on Alzheimer. Genetic cure for Cancer Opposite view: All the research should not be conducted by these private firms. For the major concern of these corporations is how to make maximum profits. Under this aim, there are some side effects and negative wash-back effects. But the government alone cannot do every possible scientific research, so it is practical rather than necessary for them to carry out some researches. /It is a practicality rather than a necessity Promotion: The best solution is that both the government and private groups coordinate with each other to carry out the researches in the scientific field. Win-win results will be produced under this collaboration. 10.01.23 map [TASK1] 关于一个叫Huntingdon的现在和对未来的规划. [TASk2] The gap between the rich and the poor is becoming much wider, the rich much richer, the poor even much poorer. What problems can the situation cause and give the solutions? Income tax, taxation policy. Government should issue the regulations on social wealth distribution. Paragraph 1 In the modern society, it is getting much severe that the imbalance of income leads to the large disparity between the rich and the poor. The people who live in the poverty would live in much worse situations, but the people who have much social resources would continue to be more prosperous. This situation has caused economic as well as social troubles. For the economic problems, there are more people in the talent market looking for jobs. Or people who suffer from the poverty without life income would increase and lead to severe economic recessions. From the whole society, the conflicts between the rich and poor would cause class conflicts or domestic chaos. South Africa has become a haven for violent crimes. Solution: As the government has the irreplaceable duty to solve the problem/ curve the situation. It should issue policies as well as regulations and laws to equally distribute the social resources and wealth. Besides, heavy tax should be paid by the rich class, even their belongings should be taxed like real estate properties or companies. So the government should have enough funds to aid the poor class by offering more subsidies and allowances. 10.01.30 bar chart [TASK1] The chart below shows different modes of transport (walk, car, cycle, bus and walk) for the children aged 5 to 12 in New Zealand to travel to school in 1997 and 2003.Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant. [TASk2] Many people believe that today there is a general increase in anti-social behaviour and lack of respect for others. What might have caused this situation? How to improve it? Report: Materialism, material satisfaction, ~ demand. In the 21st century, there seems to be an increasingly obvious trend that more people behave in a counter-society way and disrespectfully than ever before. The reason behind the phenomenon I think lies in two factors. One is that our society is coming to a transitional period due to economic crisis. Another is that the traditions and virtues are lost among the younger generations. In the good old days, people used to believe good deeds would be returned and valued. But as triggered by American subprime crisis, the global economy has been slowing down, to some extent, it is nearly coming to a halt. Under this circumstances, people especially younger generations are getting much worried about the material well-being than anything else. As a result, there is a competition that every young people is involving in for the “better life” or money-driven life style. In doing so, their life aim altered. Nobody really cares about the traditions and virtues anymore. Example: lots of young people would event sacrifice their privacy for exchange of fame and cash. Some Chinese internet icons, So the glories and life mottos are at the lost. Solution: It is the high time that government as well as families should launch a campaign against this abnormal trend. We should positively let the general public be aware of the traditional value and virtues. So the younger generation would understand a fact that their living and existence would be meaningful unless they pay the respects to others and society as a whole. 10.02.06 pie charts [TASK1] The chart below shows the percentage of working time in typical US office in 1980 and 2006. [TASk2] Air travel can only benefit the richest people in the world. Ordinary people can get no advantage with the development of air travel. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Viewpoint: Air flight travelling should bring more convenience to the ordinary. Reason 1: The air travel companies should realize that their profits come from the ordinary group not the top rich class. Quantity and times. Big time, a boom /boost Reason 2: The common people would enjoy more from the air travel than from other forms of travels. e.g: for its time-saving results and comforts. Comparison: train travel v.s air travel. Opposite view: The richest people can enjoy more of VIP services from the air journey than from others. But they only count in a small number. For future of air industry lies in the hands of common people. Promotion: We should not make air travel a privilege of the richest people, actually it is a way of transportation rather than a discrimination. For both the consumer and air travel industry, it is better to develop without the social and economic prejudice. 10.02.11 bar chart [TASK1] The bar chart shows the proportion of part-time job conducted by different genders in different age group in New Zealand in 2002. [TASk2] Some people think that politicians have the greatest influence on the world. Other people, however, believe that scientists have the greatest influence. Discuss both of views and give your opinion. Science v.s. politics Viewpoint: Scientists have more influence on the world. It is scientists who pose a great contribution to the future and well-being of human race. Reason 1. The driving force of world is technology which is conducted and innovated by scientists in different fields. A better living, working, and studying environment is created, maintained and developed by the scientific researchers. Science people Reason 2. The future of our race lies in the space technology. Example: Living on Mars will become reality after continual efforts by scientists in generations. Opposite view: Of course, the impact of politicians cannot be overlooked. They would propose, impose, or dispose something in harsh situations or at turning points or even under the emergency. Promotion: To realize the ultimate well-being and prosperity of human society, we need collaboration between and scientists and politicians. There is no better way around it. 10.02.20 three pie charts [TASK1] The pie charts below give information about percentage of four types of courses chosen by students at a college in 1984,1994 and 2004. [TASk2] Most countries want to improve standard of living through economic development, however, others think social value is lost as a result. Do you think the advantages of economic development outweigh the disadvantages? Living standard and economic development Viewpoint: The benefit from economic development outstands its drawback. Reason 1. The improvement of living standard lies in the advancement of social economy. Reason 2 Economic development can be the symbol of social welfare and stability. e.g: the social security needs the continuous effort and input from a strong financial basis. Opposite view: Financial well-being cannot overtake the tradition and value of people. The real essence of social development is the respect and enhancement of tradition and culture. But the pre-condition is the economic well-being. Promotion: The final realization of prosperity of human society is based on the economic success, on that condition can we demand the social value, tradition and culture. 10.02.27 table [TASK1] The table shows the population in UK in 1885, 2005 and the projected number in 2015 in terms of 6 age groups. [TASk2] Technological progress in the past century has its negative effect, despite its remarkable contribution. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Environmental pollution, nuclear threats: human existence. Viewpoints: Indeed, the downside of technological advancement posed great threat to human in both environment and existence. Reason 1. Environment: The consumption of fossil fuel by modern machines and industries powered by technological innovation has turned our world into a smoggy place. Reason 2 Our life and prosperity of human race are endangered by some of the technologies we created. Eg. Nuclear weapons. Opposite view: Our capacity of everyday life has been promoted ever before. We have been used to the air-conditioned places, and we don’t have to be troubled by storage of fire wood for winter. But all these go at the expense of environment. Promotion: In the new century, we should curve all the faults bought by old technological progress. We should rather use the environmental friendly technology as well as energy to maintain the harmony of human and earth. 10.03.06 two pie charts [TASK1] The pie charts below give information about the distribution of the time that male and female students spent in various websites. [TASK2] Surveys show that in many countries, people are living longer but increased life expectancy has many implications for the aging individuals and for society as a whole. What are the possible effects of longer living for individuals and society? Organ banks Longer life expectancy is a symbol of well-being society. Background: With the advancement of medical science and well-being of society, people are having a longer life span. Effect on individual: 1. physically effects for individual. Old age syndromes: Alzheimer, hypertension, strokes. Language difficulties, 2. family effects: There would need more care and attention from your family, which means more burdens to family members. Large scale: Society: 1.more pension and medical expenses. 2.the innovation of a country will be dragged by the large number of old people. Solution: Face it with strategy instead of escaping from its. Develop to old-age economy. 10.03.18 two bar charts [TASK1] The table below gives information on the ratios of male to female workforce in different fields of work in New Zealand in 1993 and 2003. [TASK2] Some people think zoos are cruel and all the zoos should be closed. However, some people think zoos are useful to protect the rare animals. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Viewpoint: It is better to protect animals without the zoos. Reason 1 Zoos cannot replace animals’ natural inhabitants. Reason 2 Zoos can only keep the animals genetically, but not practically. e.g: many zoo animals lost their nature and cannot return to their own world. Gazelles in the zoo cannot run fast so as not to be caught by lions. Opposite view: For some rare animals, zoos do offer a better protection. For the nature is cruel and hard for these animals to survive. But zoos cannot be their life-time havens / paradise. So one day they need to go back to nature. Promotion: the best way to protect animals is not to encase them into the zoos, but maintain their living and surviving places. 10.03.20 two bar charts [TASK1] The bar charts compare the different proportion of two genders who took the secondary school and higher education in four selected regions in 2000. [TASK2] In today's society, more and more work is done by machines. Do you think the positive effects of the development overweigh the negative effects on individuals and society? View points: Agreed With the development of science and technology, machines are becoming more reliable instead of human. Whether the robots or mechanic equipments will replace man power completely is becoming a heated debated. In my view, I have every reason to believe this trend stands for more bright sides/ aspects than the gloomy ones. Reason 1. It boosted the efficiency of the modern industries. Steam engine first industrial revolution. Electricity, robots Reason 2. It freed men from dangerous and health-risk jobs. Examples: working under the heavy radiation. Pollution investigation. Toxic material transportation. Opposite view: That is not to say that it only provide the positive aspects. Of course, its drawbacks are obvious that machines cannot feel, think, and judge the actual situation, which needs human control and supervision. Not to mention the unemployment and instability caused by the popularity of them. But after all, these drawbacks can be fixed by further training of staff and maintenance positions. Promotion: We must hold the view that it is human who invented machine, it must be human who decide what are the benefits and drawbacks they can bring, it should be human again who tell the future of these machines. 10.03.27 table [TASK1] The pie charts below give information about annual salaries of five employment sectors in Australia in 200. What measurement and methods can be used to tackle with it? Cause and solution: Social causes: TV contents are more attractive/ appealing to children, colorful pictures, vivid sound and contents, eye-catching effects. In the past, when TV was less appealing / at its initial stage. Children spent hours reading book, doing sports, or simply playing creatively with their peers. Now, TV means everything to them. They gradually lose their interests in fairy tales, games, and exercises. They look fat, dumb, and foolish. Family causes: parents are busy with their work. But they agreed anonymously that TV is the ideal babysitter. Even some of them use TV-watching as a reward for their kids. Solution: Social atmosphere should be altered to focus on creative thinking and active doings. Family should realize the importance of quality family time. Eg: bedtime stories. [TASK2] Some people think the recent increase in cheap air travel brings benefits, while other people think it has drawbacks to the environment and the world's resources. Discuss both views and give your opinion. Cheap air travel v.s. environment Benefits. View point: As the competition of air travel gets severe, air-line travel becomes less dear to us. Some people think it is positive, but others says it negative to our living environment as well as resources. The less expensive air-travel cost means huge mobility of personnel resources as well as services, which eventually would benefit the world as a whole. Viewpoint Reason 1 Low costs means more people would choose air-travel as their transportation. Mobility of people will become frequent and less troublesome. Reason 2. Many people would drive less frequently, which means gas consumption will be decreased. E.g: long-distance travel becomes cost-effective to people, they would not suffer from tiring long-hour driving. In this way, it saves not only the money for petrol, but also gas itself. Opposite view: That is not to say it brings all the good points. Of course, the biggest threat to nature and resources is plane travel cost air pollution in the sky. But apparently, there wouldn’t be as many planes as cars. The negative effects in the sky can be ignored. Promotion: the further advancement of modern technology would be the answer of cost-effective travel as well as environmental protection. 10.04.15 table [TASK1] The table shows the proportion of different households in a country in South America in 1970 and 2003.
