Warming-up questions 1. How much do you know about Nelson Mandela? 2. Do you know apartheid? (in South Africa) government policy of racial segregation, separating the whites and the blacks种族隔离 3. What personality do you find about Mandela from the text? Mandela never compromised his political principles and was always a source of strength for the other prisoners. He had faith for his cause. He never gave up his struggle against apartheid even behind bars on Robben Island. 4. Do you think faith is vital to one’s success? If it is possible, please give some examples. What qualities do you think people need when they want to achieve success in their career? 5. What do you think is his greatest contribution to his country and whole human being? Sayings about faith: Faith is like radar that sees through the fog. Reason is our soul's left hand, faith her right. Doubt is a pain too lonely to know that faith is his twin brother. Fear knocked at the door. Faith answered. And lo, no one was there. If there was no faith there would be no living in this world. We couldn't even eat hash with safety. Faith, to my mind, is a stiffening process, a sort of mental starch. Faith is spiritualized imagination. Faith is a passionate intuition. To me faith means not worrying. Faith is courage; it is creative while despair is always destructive. 2 Every tomorrow has two handles. We can take hold of it by the handle of anxiety, or by the handle of faith. Faith is the bird that sings when the dawn is still dark. Faith is raising the sail of our little boat until it is caught up in the soft winds above and picks up speed, not from anything within itself, but from the vast resources of the universe around us. In faith there is enough light for those who want to believe and enough shadows to blind those who don't. Faith is believing in things when common sense tells you not to. Feed your faith and your fears will starve to death. ?. About Nelson Mandela (1918-) Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born in Transkei, South Africa on July 25th, 1918. His father was Chief Henry Mandela of the Tembu Tribe. Mandela himself was educated at University College of Fort Hare and the University of Witwatersrand and qualified in law in 1942. He joined the African National Congress (ANC) in 1944 and was engaged in resistance against the ruling National Party's apartheid policies after 1948. He went on trial for treason in 1956-1961 and was acquitted in 1961. Mandela married Winnie in 1958. It was a love story, tempered tragically by the political ambitions of its two larger-than-life protagonists. He felt guilt for what Winnie had endured because of years of imprisonment. But Winnie and his family always came second to his other great love, the ANC and the liberation struggle. On June 12, 1964, eight of the accused, including Mandela, were sentenced to life imprisonment. From 1964 to 1982, he was incarcerated at Robben Island Prison, off Cape Town; thereafter, he was at Pollsmoor Prison, nearby on the mainland. During his years in prison, Nelson Mandela's reputation grew steadily. He was widely accepted as the most significant black leader in South Africa and became a potent symbol of resistance as the 3 anti-apartheid movement gathered strength. He consistently refused to compromise his political position to obtain his freedom. . Finish the exercises after the text. 2. Write a brief introduction to Nelson Mandela. ?. 14 15
