1. A good paragraph focuses on a main idea.
2. A good paragraph has a complete structure including topic sentence, developing sentences and sometimes concluding sentence.
3. The central idea of a paragraph is often introduced by a topic sentence.
4. A topic sentence is the most general statement in a paragraph.
5. A good paragraph is coherent, which means each sentence in the paragraph leads naturally and logically to the next in explaining the central idea.
6. A topic sentence may be a phrase like “the importance of computer” which appears at the very beginning of a paragraph.
7. Sentences irrelevant to the central idea in a paragraph should be left out.
8. Cohesive devices in texts are expressions (words or phrases) which serve as signals for the meaning and structure of the text. They tell us how the ideas are organized.
