Communication Barriers
People who have communication disabilities and who use ways other speech to communicate may experience a number of communication barriers when accessing your goods and services. Most of these barriers are about what you do or don’t do.
Societal Barriers
You may feel nervous about communicating with a person who has a communication disability. You may not know what to do or you may make false assumptions regarding the person’s
cognitive abilities or behave in ways that are disrepectful. You might ignore the person or talk to someone who is with them rather than talking directly to them. You might ask Yes and No questions rather than listen to what the person is communicating. Or you might pretend to understand a person’s message when you haven’t. Having information about what to do
when you meet a client who has a communication disability will help you to address these barriers.
Interaction Barriers
You may not know how the person communicates using his / her communication device or display. You may not know the role of the person’s communication assistant, whether to guess when you think you know what they are spelling, whether to interupt or what to do when you don’t understand the person’s message or when they do not understand what you are saying. This also includes being able to communicate with people who have communication disabilities over the telpehone or finding ways other than the telephone for them to access your services. Learning techniques to use when interacting with a person who has a communication disability will help you to reduce these barriers and increase access to your goods and services.

People who have communication and physical disabilities may require accommodations to complete consent or order forms, surveys or questionnaires, take notes or sign documents. You can learn how to make accessible forms as well as note taking and a range of signature options on our website.
