Reading Comprehension Passage A The concept of “environment” is certainly difficult and may even be misunderstood; but we have no handy substitute. It seems simple enough to distinguish between the organism and the surrounding environment and to separate forces acting on an organism into those that are internal 1 第1页 共10页 and biological and those that are external and environmental. But in actual practice this system breaks down in many ways, because the organism and the environment are constantly interacting so that the environment is modified by the organism and vice versa(反之亦然). In the case of man, the difficulties with the environmental concept are even more complicated because we have to deal with man as an animal and with man as a bearer(持有者)of culture. If we look at man as an animal and try to analyze the environmental forces that are acting on the organism, we find that we have to deal with things like climate, soil, plants and such-like factors common to all biological situations; but we also find, always, very important environmental influences that we can only class as “cultural”, which modify the physical and biological factors. But man, as we know him, is always a bearer of culture; and if we study human culture, we find that it, in turn, is modified by the environmental factors of climate and geography. We thus easily get into great difficulties from the necessity of viewing culture, at one moment, as a part of the man and, at another moment, as a part of the environment. 1. Which of the following words can best describe the popular understanding of “environment” as the author sees it? A. Elaborate. B. Prejudiced. C. Faultless. D. Oversimplified. 2. In analyzing the environmental forces acting on man the author suggests that ________. A. biological factors are less important to the organism than cultural factors to man B. man and other animals are modified equally by the environmental forces C. man is modified by the cultural environment as well as by the natural environment D. physical and biological factors exert more influence on other organisms than on man 4. As for culture, the author points out that ________. A. it develops side by side with environmental factors B. it is also affected by environmental factors C. it is generally accepted to be part of the environment D. it is a product of man’s biological instincts 5. In this passage, the author is primarily concerned with _______. It's always building and repairing, feeding and cleansing itself. Its goal is to be ready for your every movement, breath, and thought. The quality of your 2 第2页 共10页 life depends on how well your body works. And how well your body works depends on how much energy it gets. Energy comes from the food you eat. Food contains nutrients that your body needs for growth and energy. By eating a balanced diet, your body gets the six essential nutrients it needs. Minerals are nutrients that build bones and teeth. Minerals also form red blood cells and other substances. Water aids digestion and waste removal. Carbohydrates give your body its main source of energy. Two carbohydrates are sugars from foods such as fruits and vegetables and starches(淀粉)found in rice, potatoes, and bread. Fats help build cell membranes(膜). Proteins repair and grow body tissues. Finally, vitamins help your body use carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has created a nutritional food pyramid. It shows the daily number of servings you should eat from five food groups. The food pyramid has four levels. The base of the pyramid is the largest level. It contains the bread, cereal, rice, and pasta(面点)group from which you need six to eleven servings. The next level has two food groups: vegetables and fruits. The USDA recommends three to five servings of vegetables and two to four servings of fruit. The third level also has two groups: the milk, yogurt, and cheese group and the meat, poultry, fish, dry beans, eggs, and nuts group. You need two to three servings from each of these groups. The top of the pyramid is the smallest level. It contains fats, oils, and sweets. These foods have few nutrients, so eat them sparingly. 6. The title for this passage is probably________. A. A nutrient is ________. A. a substance that gives the body energy B. a type of blood cell C. a body tissue D. the food you eat 3 第3页 共10页 Passage C A is for always getting to work on time. B is for being extremely busy. C is for the conscientious ( 勤勤恳恳的 ) way you do your job. You may be all these things at the office, and more. But when it comes to getting ahead, experts say, the ABCs of business should include a P, for politics, as in office politics. Dale Carnegie suggested as much more than 50 years ago: Hard work alone doesn't ensure career advancement. You have to be able to sell yourself and your ideas, both publicly and behind the scenes. Yet, despite the obvious rewards of engaging in office politics—a better job, a raise, praise—many people are still unable—or unwilling—to "play the game." "People assume that office politics involves some manipulative (工于心计的) behavior," says Deborah Comer, an assistant professor of management at Hofstra University. "But politics derives from the word 'polite'. It can mean lobbying and forming associations. It can mean being kind and helpful, or even trying to please your superior, and then expecting something in return." In fact, today, experts define office politics as proper behavior used to pursue one's own self-interest in the workplace. In many cases, this involves some form of socializing within the office environment—not just in large companies, but in small workplaces as well. "The first thing people are usually judged on is their ability to perform well on a consistent basis," says Neil P. Lewis, a management psychologist. "But if two or three candidates are up for a promotion, each of whom has reasonably similar ability, a manager is going to promote the person he or she likes best. It's simple human nature." Yet, psychologists say, many employees and employers have trouble with the concept of politics in the office. Some people, they say, have an idealistic vision of work and what it takes to succeed. Still others associate politics with flattery(奉承), fearful that, if they speak up for themselves, they may appear to be flattering their boss for favors. Experts suggest altering this negative picture by recognizing the need for some self-promotion. 11. "Office politics" (Line 2, Para. 4) is used in the passage to refer to . A. the code of behavior for company staff B. the political views and beliefs of office workers C. the interpersonal relationships within a company D. the various qualities required for a successful career 12. To get promoted, one must not only be competent but ______________. A. give his boss a good impression B. honest and loyal to his company C. get along well with his colleagues D. avoid being too outstanding 13. Why are many people unwilling to "play the game" (Line 4, Para. 5)? A. They believe that doing so is impractical. B. They feel that such behavior is unprincipled. C. They are not good at manipulating colleagues. D. They think the effort will get them nowhere. 4 第4页 共10页 14. The author considers office politics to be . A. unwelcome at the workplace B. bad for interpersonal relationships C. indispensable to the development of company culture D. an important factor for personal advancement 15. "It might seem strange that people still want to listen to instead of watching television, but this is an unusual art form whose time has come again, "said David Amibrose, director of Beyond the Border, an international storytelling festival(节)in Wales. "Some of the tales, like those of the Inuit from Canada, are thousands years old. So our storytellers have come from distant lands to connect us with the distance of time. " he said early this month. Two Inuit women, both in their mid 60s, are among the few remaining who can do Kntadjait, or throat singing, which has few words and much sound. Their art is governed by the cold of their surroundings, forcing them to say little but listen attentively. Ambrose started the festival in 1993, after several years of working with those reviving(coming back into use or existence)storytelling in Wales. The flashes reflected light could be seen several miles away. The enemy did not know what the flashes meant, 6 第6页 共10页 but other Greek soldiers could understand the messages. Roman soldiers in some places built long rows of signal towers. When they had a message to send, the soldiers shouted it from tower to tower. If there were enough towers and enough soldiers with loud voices, important news could be sent quickly over distance. In Africa, people learned to send messages by beating on a series of large drums(鼓). Each drum was kept within hearing distance of the next one. The drum beats were sent out in a special way that all the drummers understood. Though the messages were simple, they could be sent at great speed for hundreds of miles. In the eighteenth century, a French engineer found a new way to send short messages. In this way, a person held a flag in each hand and the arms were moved to various positions representing different letters of the alphabet. It was like spelling out words with flags and arms. Over a long period of time, people sent messages by all these different ways. However, not until the telephone was invented in America in the nineteenth century could people send speech sounds over a great distance in just a few seconds. 25.
