Choose the best word or phrase for each numbered blank and mark A, B, Cot Don ANSWER SHEET 1. Many people want to become famous, but don't know how. Here I'd like to tell about how to become known or get closer to people.    There are certain qualities that you have to remember while  (1)   people, be it a friend, a neighbour or anybody  (2)   you. The first thing is to remember their names and birthdays and never  (3)   them if you want to get closer to them, because this is  (4)   you start getting closer to people. One of the important  (6)   which can be used to get closer to people is to listen to them.  (7)   in today's management studies, listening is a very basic necessity in  (8)   such as business negotiations and international exchanges.  (9)   people to speak about themselves and be  (10)   interested in them.    Another quality you will have to  (11)   is to appreciate people because everybody needs appreciation, but do not  (12)   it too far. If you are appreciating, let it be from the  (13)   of your heart. Everybody has got some good qualities or other which can be  (14)  . So appreciate the good qualities. See to it that they don't feel  (15)  .    Always remember to have a smile  (16)   your face whenever you meet people, because people don't like crying faces. Develop a good  (17)   of humour. Most important of all is to be  (18)  . So by all these you must know the  (19)   to reach people. Try those essentials  (20)   you will see people getting closer to you. A treating B introducing C handling D greeting 【正确答案】:A 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 考查动词辨义和上下文理解。 A around B beside C before D except 【正确答案】:A 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 考查介词辨义和上下文理解。 第3题 A overlook B lose C forget D disturb 【正确答案】:A 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 考查动词辨义和上下文理解。 部分考生误选了[C]项,是因为他们把填入动词的宾语them认为是前面所说的their names and birthdays(他们的名字和生日),但仔细分析之后,尤其是根据空格后if you want to get closer to them中的them指代的是人这一点,我们认为选overlook最为恰当。 A when B what C where D why 【正确答案】:C 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 考查从句连接词。 boast about oneself指“自夸”,与后面的listening a lot(听别人的意见)正好形成对比。 第6题 A techniques B standards C resources D functions 【正确答案】:A 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 考查名词辨义和上下文理解。由上下文文意不难看出,此处填入的词应指“方法,技巧”,故选techniques(技术,技巧,方法)。 A Even B Only C For D Though 【正确答案】:A 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 考查副词和上下文逻辑。 第8题 A circumstances B consultations C correspondences D communications 【正确答案】:A 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 考查名词辨义和上下文理解。 是对应填入名词的一种举例说明,而能够概括business negotiations(生意谈判)和international exchanges(国际交流)两种事物的只能是circumstances(情况,事件,场合),故本题选[A]。 第13题 A bottom B core C essence D faith 【正确答案】:A 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 考查名词辨义和习惯用法。from the bottom of one's heart是个习惯表达,指“发自心底,发自内心深处”,因此本题选[A]。 第14题 A discovered B estimated C imagined D recognized 【正确答案】:A 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 考查动词辨义和上下文理解。 A across B in C on D over 【正确答案】:C 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 考查介词用法。 第17题 A sense B habit C concept D meaning 【正确答案】:A 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 考查名词辨义和用法。(a) sense of humour是个常用表达,指“幽默感”。 第18题 A self-confident B self-oriented C self-conscious D self-satisfied 【正确答案】:A 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 考查形容词辨义和上下文理解。 A and B for C or D then 【正确答案】:A 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 考查连词用法。 二、Reading Comprehension(共10小题,共20.0分)Read the following three texts.Answer the questions on each text by choosing A, B, C or D. 第1题 Companies have the legal right to monitor employees' e-mail and instant messaging. Many do, whether they warn their workers or not. Last month the University of Tennessee released the e-mail correspondence between an administrator and a married college president in which the administrator wrote of her love for him, and of her use of drugs and alcohol to deal with her unhappiness. Employers, including The New York Times and Dow Chemical, have fired workers for sending improper e-mail.    But the fastest-growing area for Internet spying is the home. SpectorSoft, a leading manufacturer of spyware, at first marketed its products to parents and employers. Sales jumped enormously, however, when the company changed its pitch to target romantic partners. "In just one day of running Spector on my home PC, I was able to identify my boyfriend's true personality," a message on the company's website declares.    What can you expect if someone puts SpectorSoft's Spector 2.2 on your computer? It will take hundreds of records an hour of every website and e-mail that appears on your screen, and store them so that someone who is spying on you can review them later. A new product, SpectorSoft's eBlaster, will send the spy detailed e-mail reports updating your computer activities frequently. These products keep the people being spied on totally unaware.    SpectorSoft has sold 35 000 copies of its spyware, and it has only a piece of a flourishing market. WinWhatWhere, another big player, sells primarily to businesses, but what it calls the "discontented family member" market has been finding WinWhatWhere. Many smaller companies have sites that sell relatively crude "key-loggers", software that records every keystroke typed on a computer.    Isn't all this spying on loved ones a little creepy? Not to SpectorSoft president Doug Fowler. "If you're in a committed relationship and you get caught because of evidence online, as far as I'm concerned you deserve to be caught," he says. Richard Eaton, president of WinWhatWhere, recognizes that in a perfect world users would reveal that they have placed monitoring software on a computer. But WinWhatWhere Investigator has a feature that allows it to be completely hidden. "Our customers demanded it," he says. From the text we learn that most companies in the US ______. A forbid their employees to get online at work B respect the online privacy of their employees C reveal the privacy of their employees publicly D monitor the online activities of their employees 【正确答案】:D 【本题分数】:2.0分 【答案解析】 细节题。 The future of spyware is the most promising when it comes to ______. A standardizing individual online patterns B overseeing personal online behaviors C diversifying present online patterns D regulating various online behaviors 【正确答案】:B 【本题分数】:2.0分 【答案解析】 分析推理题。 其余三项中,[A]中的standardizing(使标准化)、[C]中的diversifying(使多样化)在原文中都没有体现,由常识也可知不对;[D]项中的regulating( 规范 编程规范下载gsp规范下载钢格栅规范下载警徽规范下载建设厅规范下载 )在原文中没有体现,而various online behaviors(不同的上网行为)所指也太泛。 Form the text we know that SpectorSoft's Spector 2.2 works ______. It will take hundreds of records...can review them later(它会将你的电脑屏幕上出现的每一个网站、每一封电子邮件都 记录 混凝土 养护记录下载土方回填监理旁站记录免费下载集备记录下载集备记录下载集备记录下载 下来,每小时能记录几百条,让监控你的人过后可以浏览这些记录)。由这一句显然无法说明这一软件是creatively(有创造性地)、precisely(精确地)或quickly(迅速地)。 These products keep the people being spied on totally unaware(这些产品都让被监控的人毫无察觉),表明这些软件(包括Spector 2.2)运行时都是secretly(秘密地,隐秘地),故本题答案是[C]。 What might WinWhatWhere do in the future? A Purchase small software companies. B Turn its attention to at-home net users. C Follow the keystrokes of computer users. D Focus its attention on the business circles. 该句前一分句先指出WinWhatWhere这个公司的软件主要销售给公司,而后一分句紧接着指出:but what it calls the “discontented family member” market has been finding WinWhatWhere(但其所称的“牢骚满腹的家人”这一市场一直都在找寻WinWhatWhere)。 WinWhatWhere Investigator is characterized by its ability ______. A to cover its whole functioning up B to monitor exact online behaviors C to reveal its existence on the computer D to gather every piece of online information 【正确答案】:A 【本题分数】:2.0分 【答案解析】 细节题。 But WinWhatWhere Investigator has a feature that allows it to be completely hidden(但WinWhatWhere Investigator这个软件具有完全隐形的特点),句中的feature对应于题目中的characterized,而be completely hidden则对应于该项中的cover its whole functioning up。 The technology of the North American colonies did not differ strikingly from that of Europe, but in one respect, the colonists enjoyed a great advantage. Especially by comparison with Britain, Americans had a wonderfully plentiful supply of wood.    The first colonists did not, as many people imagined, find an entire continent covered by a continuous forest. Even along the Atlantic seaboard, the forest was broken at many points. Nevertheless, all sorts of fine trees abounded, and through the early colonial period, those who pushed westward encountered new forests. By the end of the colonial era, the price of wood had risen slightly in eastern cities, but wood was still extremely abundant.    The availability of wood brought advantages that have seldom been appreciated. Wood was a foundation of the economy. Houses and all manner of buildings were made of wood to a degree unknown in Britain. Secondly, wood was used as a fuel for heating and cooking. Thirdly, it was used as the source of important industrial compounds, such as potash, an industrial alkali; charcoal, a component of gunpowder, and tannic acid, used for tanning leather.    The supply of wood conferred advantages but had some negative aspects as well. Iron at that time was produced by heating iron ore with charcoal. Because Britain was so stripped of trees, she was unable to exploit her rich iron mines. But the American colonies had both iron ore and wood; iron production was encouraged and became successful. However, when Britain developed coke smelting, the colonies did not follow suit because they had plenty of wood and besides, charcoal iron was stronger than coke iron. Coke smelting led to technological innovations and was linked to the emergence of the Industrial Revolution. In the early nineteenth century, the former colonies lagged behind Britain in industrial development because their supply of wood led them to cling to charcoal iron. Which of the following is a common assumption about the forests in North America during the colonial period? A Their economic value was little known. B They contained only a few types of trees. C They covered almost the entire continent. D They existed only along the Atlantic seaboard. The first colonists did not,as many people imagined, find an entire continent covered by a continuous forest(最初的殖民者并未像许多人所想像的那样,找到一处被连绵不断的森林全部覆盖的大陆)。 What can be inferred about houses in Britain during the period mentioned in the text? A They were more expensive than American houses. B They were generally built with imported materials. C They were usually built from materials other than wood. D They were typically smaller than homes in North America 【正确答案】:C 【本题分数】:2.0分 【答案解析】 分析推理题。 Houses and all manner of buildings were made of wood to a degree unknown in Britain(房屋和所有建筑在某种程度上来说都由木材建成,这在英国却不为人知),据此即可推知英国树木较少,房子都少用木材,而用其他材料建成,故选[C]。 Why does the author mention gunpowder in Paragraph 3? A To remind readers that the colonial era ended in warfare. B To give an example of a product made from wood consumption. C To illustrate some negative aspects of some industrial processes. D To suggest that wood was not the only important product of the colonies. 短文第三段提到gunpowder(火药)的地方是在其最后一句:it was used as the source of important industrial compounds, such as...a component of gunpowder…(它被用作一些重要的工业化合物的原料,比如…… Why was the use of coke smelting advantageous according to the text? A It led to advances in technology. B It stimulated the demand for wood. C It was less expensive than wood smelting. D It produced a stronger type of iron than charcoal smelting. What does the text mainly discuss? A The roots of the Industrial Revolution. B The advantages of using wood in the colonies. C The difference between charcoal iron and coke iron. D The effects of an abundance of wood on the colonies. You should write your responses to both Part A and Part B of this section on ANSWER SHEET 2. You have an appointment with Mr John Smith, your client, in his office the day after tomorrow. But you won't be able to meet him, as your boss has just told you to deal with some urgent business in another city.    Write an e-mail to Mr John Smith,    (1) to apologize for postponing the appointment;    (2) to explain why the appointment has to be postponed; and    (3) to make a new appointment.    You should write approximately 100 words. Do not use your own name at the end of your e-mail message. Use "Wang Lin" instead. Dear Mr John Smith,    I'm writing to apologize for not being able to keep our appointment in your office the day after tomorrow. The fact is that my boss has just told me to deal with some urgent business in Guangzhou. But I might be back this Friday. And I'll come to your office at 2 p. m that day if that is convenient for you. I'll check my mailbox tomorrow to see if there is a message from you. Otherwise, I'll see you at that time. I sincerely hope that you will accept my deep apology and the new arrangement. Below is a list of estimates of the average temperature rise in China in the 21st century. Look at it and write an essay of about 120 words making reference to the following two points:    (1) a description of the listed information; and    (2) your comment on it. From the picture, we can see that the average temperature in China will rise quickly in the near future. For example, it will rise 1.3 to 2.1 centigrade in 2020, 1.5 to 2.8 centigrade in 2030, 2.3 to 3.3 centigrade in 2050, and even 3.9 to 5.0 centigrade in 2090.    The reason for the rise is obvious: the Greenhouse Effect caused by human pollution. As we all know, today we have more and more cars, buses, trucks, trains and airplanes. They do have brought much convenience to us,  but at the same time they have brought some serious environmental problems, one of which is the Greenhouse Effect.    The numbers in the diagram warn us that we human beings should make efforts to protect our environment. First of all, we should try to use some less pollutive transport, such as bicycles, and encourage public transportation. Secondly, we should learn to make good use of the green energies, such as solar energy and wind power. Finally, all human beings should remember the fact that we have only one earth. Only we all realize the importance of environmental protection can our sky be bluer, our rivers be clearer, and our next generations live a happier life. Lee Beaty:    Your "Health For Life" articles give excellent advice on simple lifestyle changes to improve health. Whenever possible, I ride my bicycle to work. While I was a student, I also rode to class. We need to educate motorists about sharing the road with cyclists, and create bike lanes to encourage more people to go from point A to point B while getting some exercise, saving fuel and improving the environment.    Roberto Anson:    You had a fascinating exploration in your "Health For Life" articles. Technology often makes us give up responsibility for our health. The United States has the best medical technology but unequal access to care. The point is that, increasingly, only the healthy and well-off can afford health care. Your advice to skip the heart scan and spend the money on a health club membership shifts the focus from technology to personal responsibility.    Fred Leeds:    Dr Nancy Rigotti's "Kicking the Habit" is tried, but not necessarily true advice. As a former three-pack- a-day smoker, I tried these approaches many times with no success until I finally accepted a fundamental truth about myself. Only after I got my mind set to the point where my desire to quit smoking was stronger than the desire to continue was I able to put the cigarettes down.    Bill Wittig:    It is well documented that people with the Type D personality have chemicals in their brains that differ from those of normal people. Many of them never get mental health treatment because they work, have families and by all observable criteria are functioning well. They do not realize their problem. What might prevent the Type D personality from having a heart attack is some psychological treatment as well as fish oil.    Kristin Linklater:    Your magazine tells me that not only must I exercise to avoid heart attacks, but I must be happy. I must laugh a lot, or my heart will be starved of necessary chemicals. I must have friends and community to support me, or I'll certainly die soon. I tried to take the Type D personality test that will determine whether I'm going to die of negativity, but your column headings, "False, Less false, Neutral, Less true, True" make it impossible to figure out my behavior.  Statements [A] You can hardly force yourself to do a thing until you feel like doing it. [B] Mental health treatment may help prevent some physical problems. [C] We'd better count more on regular exercise than medical care. [D] I'm not interested in taking any behavior test proposed in magazines. [E] Cycling is good for health as well as for our surroundings. [F] To save money and improve health, I quit driving to work. [G] I'm still puzzled as to whether your advice and the listed personality details suit me or not. Your advice to skip the heart scan...to personal responsibility(你们建议不去做心脏扫描而把钱花在健身俱乐部上,这正是把重心从医疗技术转移到个人责任上来),其意就是他赞同重视日常锻炼、不过分依赖医疗技术的观点,由此可知应选[C]。 Dr Nancy Rigotti's “Kicking the Habit” is...not necessarily true advice,然后用自己的亲身经历为例,说明了一个truth:Only after I got my:mind set to the point...was I able to put the cigarettes down(只有当我下定决心,戒烟的愿望压过继续吸烟的欲望时,我才能真正把烟放下)。 第5题 Kristin Linklater 【正确答案】: [G] [本题分数]: 1.0 分 【答案解析】 最后一个人一开始就用多个含must的句子表明,按照杂志的建议自己该如何如何做;然后在最后一句用but一转话锋,指出:but your column headings,“False,Less false,Neutral,Less true,True” make it impossible to figure out my behavior(然而你们栏目的标题“误,较误,中性,较真,真”使得根本无法弄清我的行为属于哪一种),说明无法根据杂志上的类型将自己对号入座。 五、Listening Comprehension(共25小题,共25.0分) 第1题 What does the man propose to do first? A Go downtown. B See the movie. C Get the tickets. D Have a meal. 【正确答案】:D 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 [听力原文] W: Tony, there is an interesting new movie in town. We really must go and see it. C The name of the college. D The address of the college. Could you tell me how to get to The King's College, please? M: Yes, walk straight up this road till you come to the traffic lights. The college is around the corner. You won't miss it.    关键在于听懂女士问话中的how to get to The King's College一处,这表明她是在问路。 Why does the woman ask about the time? A She does not have a watch. B She is nervous about the appointment. C John's watch keeps good time. D John is afraid to be late. 【正确答案】:B 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 [听力原文] W: John, what time is it now? M: It's still early, just after two. W: Well, as you know, this is a very important appointment. I can't be late, can I? What are the speakers talking about? A Their best friend. B Their favourite colour. C The clothes the woman is wearing. D A present the man has bought. 【正确答案】:C 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 [听力原文] M: That's a nice dress you're wearing. W: Thank you. My father gave it to me as a birthday present. He knows red's my favourite colour. What do the speakers decide to do? A The man will bring some food back for dinner. B They will go to their friend's home for supper. C The woman will fill the refrigerator before supper. D They will eat out for dinner. 【正确答案】:D 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 [听力原文] W: Mike, there's not much left in the refrigerator. M: Well, I might be able to pick up a few things after work, but I have to be back rather late today. B Relieved. C Upset. D Sarcastic. 【正确答案】:B 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 [听力原文] W: Why on earth are you so late? I've been waiting for more than half an hour! M: Why? Because I was almost killed. Some awful driver hit the back wheel of my bicycle and sent me onto the pavement. W: Oh, my God! Are you hurt? M: No, fortunately I'm fine. W: Thank goodness for that! What is the most probable relationship of the two people? A Salesperson and customer. B Doctor and patient. C Receptionist and tourist. D Lawyer and client. Could I ask you to register, please? M: Certainly. What do I do? A Fashion. B Music. C A film. D A book. 【正确答案】:D 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 [听力原文] M: Mary, do you know anything about this author's latest best-seller? W: Sure. I've just finished it. I strongly recommend it. What do we learn from the man's reply? A He doesn't care if it is turned off. B He thinks the woman is right. C He is reluctant to turn it off. D He wants the woman to watch the game, too. 【正确答案】:C 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 [听力原文] W: Do you mind if I turn the TV off? M: Can't you see the football match hasn't finished yet? W: But the baby is already in bed. M: Oh, all right. You always get your way. You always get your way(你总是有办法)表达的则是无可奈何的语气,表明他不愿关电视,选[C]。 How does the man feel about the result? A He thinks it is unbelievable. B He thinks it was too hard for Henry. C He thinks Henry worked too hard. D He thinks Henry was not given a chance. 【正确答案】:A 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 [听力原文] W: Do you know? Henry didn't win that speech contest. M: Didn't he? I thought for sure he would. He worked so hard on it. W: Maybe that's why he lost. They thought he was simply reciting. How old is Katie? A 16. B 17. C 18. D 19. Please take a seat. W: Thank you. M: I'm Paul Adams, Branch Manager. W: Katie Thomas. Pleased to meet you. M: I take it you're looking for temporary office work. W: That's right. M: How old are you, Katie? W: I'm eighteen. M: That's rather young. What experience have you had? W: Well, I've just left school, actually, and I'm looking for a job between now and when I go to college. M: It doesn't sound as though we can help, Katie. You see, our clients are very demanding — especially when it comes to the new office technology. W: Oh, that's no problem. I took extra classes in office skills at school. M: Oh, perhaps you'd like to outline what you've been doing? W: I started by learning keyboard skills. Then I went on to learn about word processing. M: Good. You seem qualified from the technical point of view. But how well do you think you'll get along with people in an office? W: I think I'm quite adaptable. I belonged to the drama society, as well as working on the school magazine. And I played a bit of sport. So I'm used to working as part of a team. M: Sounds promising. Let's see... There's a request from Johnson's Imports for "a bright youngster ... What kind of job is Katie looking for? A A part-time job for a school magazine. Er, I'm arriving at the airport at 9 o'clock and taking off at 10 o'clock. W: What are you going to do in Italy? Lie on the beach and get nicely sun-tanned? M: I enjoy sunbathing on the beach. But this holiday is going to be a bit different. It's more of a cultural holiday. I hope to visit some museums, art galleries, taste a bit of the food and the drink, and experience the lifestyle of Italy. W: Sounds pretty interesting. M: Yeah, I've got a whole list of museums and art galleries. And in fact, I'm hiring a car in Milan so I can drive around a bit. W: That's a good idea. Hiring a car makes it easier to see the city. Well, actually I'm going to have a holiday which is rather different from yours. M: Where are you going then? W: Haven't decided yet. I may go to the beach and stay in a small hotel where I can watch the sea. I just want to take it easy, you know. M: I understand. You've worked too hard this semester. A bit of rest will do you good. W: That's true. Oh, Gosh! I've got to go now. Have a nice holiday! M: Thanks. You too! Bye. How will the man travel to the airport? A By bus. B By coach. C By taxi. M: I guess not much different from everyone else. I'm interested in sport, and I run about 3 miles every day. I particularly enjoy cross-country running, where you have to run across fields, jump over streams and so on. While I'm running I think about all sorts of things, and at the end of a run I'm sometimes surprised to find that I've managed to solve a problem that was on my mind.    Next year I'm going to try the London Marathon. It's a long, hard race — 26 miles, or 42 kilometres — and you have to be tough to finish, but I very much want to do it. I worry a bit about getting old and I'd like to prove to myself that I'm still almost as fit as I was twenty years ago.    I'm interested in climbing as well as running. I'll never become an expert climber, but I know what I'm doing in the mountains. I successfully completed a course in snow and ice climbing when I was younger, and I've done a series of easy climbs in the Alps during the last few years. My wife doesn't share my interest in mountains. She agreed to go climbing with me once, but she found that she felt ill as soon as she got above 1 000 metres, so we decide to follow different hobbies. W: You certainly seem to enjoy various types of recreation. All right, Mr Smith. Thanks for your interesting talk. I'm interested in climbing as well as running一句,其前的部分介绍的是跑步,而其后介绍的是爬山,因此答案是[C]。 What is the main reason for the man to run every day? B Several months ago. C A year ago. D Two years ago. 【正确答案】:C 【本题分数】:1.0分 【答案解析】 [听力原文] 22-25 W: Dr Smith, you were a political journalist in America and I was told that you've chosen to live here, a mountain village like this in the Himalayan Community. Could you please tell me why you came to India and settled down here? M: Yes, of course. I came to India a year ago to have a better understanding of the country. After I arrived, I had to find a place where I could live and write. Of course there were many places for me to choose. But after some months I settled down happily in this village because I like the countryside better and it is a little cooler than those in the plains. W: Have you ever thought of a typical village as a better choice? M: Yes, I have. Yet no such thing exists. In fact I wasted a lot of time looking for the typical village. Conditions vary too widely. But the villages I stayed in had much in common— poverty, dirt, and ignorance. W: But in spite of all this, you still feel very happy. Is the experience in this country so important to you that you came all the way from the United States? M: Well, that's also the question that the villagers ask me. They think that I'm crazy to give up my comfortable life in the United States and isolate myself from the outside world in this remote village, like a retired old man Why have I come? I've put aside my work as a political journalist because my ideas have changed. I've come to believe that what is happening in the Third World is more important than anything else. But to understand how three-quarters of the world's people live, and how their future might affect the rest of the world, I feel that I first have to try and share their way of life. W: I must say I find your view on this issue very convincing. I'm sure when you go back to your own country you'll find your stay here very rewarding. Why did Dr Smith come to settle down in a village in the Himalayas? A To change his ideas. B To understand the Third World better. C To start a new career there. D To enjoy his retirement.
