1.BriefintroductionofTuYouyou2.Malaria research- artemisinin3.Inspiration1BriefintroductionTuYouyou, bornin1930inNingbo,hasbeenapharmacologistattheChinaAcademyofChineseMedicineSciencesince1965,engaginginresearchofthecombinationofTCMandWM.TCM:traditionalChinesemedicine WM:westernmedicine2Herdiscoveryofartemisininanditstreatmentofmalariaisregardedasasignificantbreakthroughof tropicalmedicine inthe20thcenturyandhealthimprovementforpeopleoftropicaldevelopingcountriesinSouthAsia,Africa,andSouthAmerica.Forherwork,Tureceivedthe2011LaskerAwardinclinicalmedicineandthe2015NobelPrizeinPhysiologyorMedicine.3In11December（BeijingTime），TuYouyoureceivedher2015NobelPrizeinPhysiologyorMedicineinSweden.4TuisthefirstChineseNobellaureateinphysiologyormedicineandthefirstcitizenofthePeople'sRepublicofChinatoreceivetheNobelPrizeinnaturalsciences.“TheProfessorofThreeNos”:nopostgraduatedegree,nostudyorresearchexperienceabroad,notamemberofanyChinesenationalacademies.5Malaria research- artemisininArtemisinin,adrugthathassignificantlyreducedthedeathrateofmalariapatients,andsavedmillionsoflivesacrosstheglobe,especiallyinthedevelopingcountry.6Tustartedher malariaresearchinChinawhentheCulturalRevolutionwasinprogress.Inearly1969,Tuwasappointedastheheadoftheproject,namedProject523researchgroupatherinstitute.Sheandhercolleaguesexperimentedwith380extractsin2,000candidaterecipesbeforetheyfinallysucceeded.7In1971,TuwasinspiredbymanyancientclassicworksonTCM. Usingapioneeringlow-temperaturemethod,Tuandherteamfirstextractedartemisininfromasweetwormwoodplant(青蒿).8 Forthesakeofdrugsafety,shehadpersonallytakingtests，whichledtoherliverpoisoning,butshestillkeptonworking,regardlessofpickingsamplesinthewild,orintheindoorexperimentstudy.9InspirationAchievingmodernizationofTCMthroughscienceandtechnology.Tu‘ssuccessshowsthatTCMhastoembracemoderntechnologiesandlaboratorytoolsand,moreimportant,sticktotheessenceofthetime-honoredmedicalscience,practicinginnovationwhenusingTCMtheories.Tu'sNobelPrizewillpromptmorebasicscientificresearchintoancientTCMtextsandwaystoexploreresearchfindings.10EffectivecombinationofTCMandWM.ThereareenormoustreasureinTCM,soitcanplayamoreimportantroleinmodernmedicine.Inaddition,asimpleapplicationofWesternmedicalstandardstoTCMwon'twork,ChinesemedicinedevelopmentneedsmoreopeninclusiveofChineseandWesterntomakebreakthroughs.11Improvingtheinnovationmechanism.Chinashouldfocusoncultivatinggoodacademicresearchenvironmentandscientificresearchmechanismtoencouragemorescientists.Chinaspendsmorethan1billionyuan($156million)annuallyonTCM-relatedresearch,andthatinvestmentshouldbefurtherstrengthened.12Thankyou13
