It was first published in 1847 in the name of Ellis Bell. Emily Bronte was born in July 30, 1818, and died in December 19, 1848. She was a British novelist and poet, now best remembered for her this only novel. Emily was the second eldest of the three surviving Bronte sisters, between Charlotte and Anne. The narrative of Wuthering Heights is a story of love and hatred. Many of the comments concentrate mainly on the human nature shown in the book, both on the pleasant and desperate side. Nevertheless after finishing the book, the most impressive plot to me is the love triangle between Senior Catherine, Edgar Linton and Heathcliff. The story has several flashbacks, and two narrators - Mr. Lockwood and Ellen "Nelly" ean. The novel opens in 1801, with Lockwood arriving at Thrushcross Grange, a grand D house on the Yorkshire moors. He is renting from the surly Heathcliff, who lives at nearby Wuthering Heights. Lockwood catches a cold, so he lives in Wuthering Heights. One night, Lockwood finds a book of a girl named Catherine Earnshaw, in which she and Heathcliff were children. Then Lockwood dreams a terrible dream of Catherine's ghost coming in through the window, deathly pale and frightening, and begging him to let her into the home. Heathcliff awoken and runs into Lockwood’s room as Lockwood shouts in fear. His mood changes soon when Lockwood tells him of Catherine's ghost. The following morning, Lockwood sets off to Thrushcross Grange where he asks Nelly Dean. And Nelly begins to tell the story of Heathcliff, Catherine, and Wuthering Heights. Thirty years ago, Heathcliff, a foundling on the streets of Liverpool, was brought to Wuthering Heights by the then-owner, the kindly Mr. Earnshaw, and raised as his own. Ellen said that Heathcliff might have been descended from Spanish or American origins. He was often described as "dark" or "gypsy". Earnshaw's daughter Catherine became Heathcliff's inseparable friend. Her brother Hindley, however, resents Heathcliff, seeing him as an interloper and rival. Mr. Earnshaw died three years later, and Hindley took over the estate. He brutalized Heathcliff, forcing him to work as a hired hand. Catherine becomes friends with a neighbour family, the Lintons of Thrushcross Grange, who mellow her initially wild personality. Catherine was attached to the refined and mild young Edgar Linton, the son of neighbor family, the Lintons of Thrushcross Grange. A year later, Hindley's wife died after giving birth to a son, Hareton; Hindley took to drink. Some two years after that, Catherine agreed to marry Edgar. This crushed Heathcliff, and Heathcliff overheard Catherine's explanation that it would be "degrading" to marry him. Heathcliff stormed out and left Wuthering Heights, not hearing Catherine's continuing declarations that Heathcliff was as much a part of her as the rocks are to the earth beneath. Catherine married Edgar, and was initially very happy. Some time later, Heathcliff returned, intent on destroying people who prevent him from being with Catherine. He had mysteriously become very wealthy. Through loaning to the drunken and dissipated Hindley then Hindley cannot repay. In order to ruining Edgar, Heathcliff eloped with Edgar's sister Isabella. Catherine became very ill after Heathcliff's return and died a few hours after giving birth to a daughter also named Catherine, or Cathy. Heathcliff became only more bitter and vengeful. Isabella fled a month later, and gave birth to a boy, Linton. At around the same time, Hindley died. Heathcliff took ownership of Wuthering Heights, and vowed to raise Hindley's son Hareton with as much neglect as he had suffered at Hindley's hands years earlier. Twelve years later, the dying Isabella asked Edgar to raise her and Heathcliff's son, Linton. However, Heathcliff found out about this and took the sickly, spoiled child to Wuthering Heights. A few years later, Heathcliff attempted to persuade young Cathy to marry Linton. Cathy refuses, so Heathcliff kidnapped her and forced the two to marry. Soon after, Edgar Linton died, followed shortly by Linton Heathcliff. This left Cathy a widow and a virtual prisoner at Wuthering Heights, as Heathcliff had gained complete control of both Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange. It was at this time that Lockwood arrived, renting Thrushcross Grange from Heathcliff, and hearing Nelly Dean's story. Shocked, Lockwood left for London. The love between Catherine and Heathcliff was like fire, burning inside their hearts. Anything tempting to stop this emotion would be burnt down to ash. Heathcliff disappeared when Catherine married Edgar, and when he was back, he was a whole other man, a man strong enough to destroy all the barriers ahead of his love. He did not care even on bit about the others except Catherine. They love each other only for the reason that they are just two people portrayed out of the same flesh and bones with the same soul. This love is pure and valuable, but overwhelming for the world, even for themselves. It’s what the author was aspiring after deep inside her heart. During his absence, however, events reached a climax that Nelly described when he returned a year later. Cathy gradually softened toward her rough, uneducated cousin Hareton, just as her mother was tender towards Heathcliff. When Heathcliff was confronted by Cathy and Hareton's love, he seemed to suffer a mental break from reality and saw Catherine's ghost. He abandoned his life-long vendetta and died broken and tormented, but glad to be rejoining Catherine. Heathcliff is buried next to Catherine (the elder), Cathy and Hareton married. at Catherine’s funeral, Heathcliff picked out Edgar’s hair and put his together with her. However when he was away, Catherine’s daughter again picked up the hair of Edgar and put it back. The hair of the three people tangled and could not be separated. I suppose that this description is for the symbolic meaning that the two kinds of love were of equal important in the lady’s life. They may not appear in the same way or of the same base, but they are all love. In the end, after their death, ‘the three headstones on the slope next the moor: on middle one grey, and half buried in the heath; Edgar Linton’s only harmonized by the turf and moss creeping up its foot; Heathcliff’s still bare.’ The sleepers underground were finally in peace, but the rivalry of two kinds of loves continued, and the choice once Catherine made will keeping on bothering different people. The story concludes with Lockwood visiting the grave, sorry that he had not courted Cathy, and unsure of what to feel. The whole story make people’s mood heavy. Fortunately, the end is happy. When this book came out, it received a lot of critical comments. It sold poorly, and many people thought Wuthering Heights was a sordid, vulgar, unnatural, or fantastic, and unworthy reading book at that time. Many years after Emily Bronte died, people found this book’s value. And Emily Bronte became a famous and important woman writer in history of British literature. Although this book is complicated, I still think it is worth of reading. It shows a human nature personality and a tragic love story caused by prejudice in that age.
