Reading Comprehension (30 points) Directions: In this section there are four passages. Each of them is followed by some questions. For each question there are four suggested answers marked A),B),C),and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. Questions 21-25 are based on the following passage. By far the most common snake in Britain is the adder (奎蛇). In Scotland, in fact, there are no other snakes at all. The adder is also the only British snake with a poisonous bite. It can be found almost anywhere, but prefers sunny hillsides and rough open country, including high ground. In Ireland there are no snakes at all. Most people regard snake bites as a fatal (致命的) misfortune, but not all bites are serious, and very few are fatal. Sometimes attempts at emergency treatment turn out to be more dangerous than the bite itself, with amateurs (外行人) heroically, but mistakenly, trying do-it-yourself surgery (手 术) and other unnecessary measures. All snakes have small teeth, so that all snakes can bite, but only the bite of the adder presents any danger. British snakes are shy animals and far more frightened of you than you could possibly be of them. The adder will attack only if it feels threatened, as can happen if you take it by surprise and step on it accidentally, or if you try to catch it or pick it up, which it dislikes intensely. If it hears you coming, it will normally get out of the wa6y as quickly as it can, but adders cannot move very rapidly and may attack before moving if you are very close. The effect of a bite varies considerably. It depends upon several things, one of which is the body-weight of the person bitten. The bigger the person, the less harmful the bite is likely to be, which is why children suffer far more seriously from snake bites than adults. A healthy person will also have better resistance against the poison. Very few people actually die from snake bites in Britain, and though these bites can make some people very ill, there are probably just as many cases of bites having little or no effect, as there are of serious illness. 21. Adders are most likely to be found _______. A) in wider parts of Britain and Ireland B) in Scotland but nowhere else C) on wild land through Britain D) in the countryside in England 22. If you are with someone who is bitten by an adder, you should ______. A) try to catch the snake B) not treat the bite yourself C) not worry too much about the victim D) operate him as soon as possible 23. We are told that adders _______. A) normally friendly towards people B) unlikely to bite except in self-defense C) likely to attack people whenever they see them D) not afraid of human beings 24. If an adder hears you approaching, it will usually ______. A) move out of your path B) take no notice of you at all C) disappear very quickly D) wait until you are close and then attack 25. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A) Adders are more likely to attack children than adults. B) The adder prefers to bite a person with a heavy body. C)The danger of adder bites is different from person to person. D)In most cases adder bites are more serious than other illnesses. Questions 26-30 are based on the following passages. Only the government can ensure that the American people have clean air and pure water. Congress must pass laws to stop manufacturers from polluting the air and water with the waste from their factories. Unless anti-pollution standards are enforced for all, companies that care about a clean environment will go out of business. For example, if Automobile Company X spends money to put an air-pollution control device on their automobiles, their cars will be more expensive than the cars produced by another company. People who don’t have the extra money or who don’t care about pollution will not buy the more expensive cars. Automobile Company X will go bankrupt (破产); that is, it won’t make enough money to pay its workers and to buy materials. It will then go out of business. Of course, no automobile company will make itself go bankrupt on purpose, and the pollution of the land and air and water will go on. But if the government says that all automobile manufacturers must make cars with air-pollution control devices, the cost of all manufacturers will be equal. So the government cannot let companies decide whether or not they want to stop pollution. The government must force manufacturers to clean up the environment by setting anti-pollution standards for everyone. 26. If a company cares about a clean environment while others don’t, it will have to _______. A) change the anti-pollution standards for its products B) sell its products at a more expensive price C) buy materials at a higher price D) pay more money to its workers 27. The writer gives the example of Automobile Company X to show that _______. A) manufacturers will not take care of pollution control on their own will B) few manufacturers are aware of the importance of air-pollution control C) air-pollution control devices are more expensive than other devices D) people like to buy cars that are equipped with pollution control devices 28. According to the writer, anti-pollution standards ensure that ______. A) no manufacturer will go bankrupt for spending money on pollution control B) less money will be spent in buying pollution control devices C) manufacturers know how to control pollution more effectively D)all manufacturers have to take measures to control pollution 29. The purpose of this passage is _______. A) to describe how a company can go bankrupt B) to emphasize the urgent need of cleaning up the environment C) to stress the importance of the government’s role In preventing pollution D) to tell how difficult it is to keep the environment free from air-pollution 30. What can be inferred from thin passage? A) Companies have not been given an equal chance to develop their business. B) A company will go bankrupt if its cars have to be installed with pollution control devices. C) The US government has not set up standards on pollution control for car producers. D) It is necessary to persuade producers to take effective pollution control measure. Questions 31-35 are based on the following passages. Large-scale production in a large market brings advantages: mass production helps to reduce the manufacturing costs of consumer goods and the single market also makes it easier to specialize. Together, these two considerations improve businesses’ chance of making profit. Within the single market, the Community (欧共体) is making clearly strict European industrial standards which help European industry compete with imported products and conquer new markets, as well as making high-quality products available to the consumer. The European commission’s competition policy serves to ensure that the common interest prevails over individual business interests. At the same time, it is flexible enough to allow co-operation between small firms. Business are being encouraged to operate outside the country in which they are based by measures designed to ensure that they are no longer taxed twice for doing so. The days when taxes are an obstacle to Europe-wide business operation will soon be gone. In addition to creating a favorable business environment, the community’s industrial policy is also concerned with developing specific strategies. The objective is to carry out long-term plans to develop industries such as the electronics industry, information technology, biotechnology (生物 技术) and textiles. These measures, at national and community level, will influence the quality of products, the technology used to manufacture them, the training the workforce receives, and the development of new outlets. In short, a whole range of instruments will be created to protect the future of European technology. These projects will require extra funding at Community level for training, research and development and communications networks. The extra Community funding will be used as rationally as possible in a way which maximizes the benefit to European industry. 31. The European Community has found ______. A) a single market to carry out mass production B) the Community market to produce high quality goods C) a large market to increase business with other countries D) a new market to make it easier to get profits 32. We can infer from the passage that the community’s general policy ______. A) helps the small firms to do business flexibly B) encourages big firms to conquer the small ones C) emphasizes the interest of the Community as a whole D) brings the customer more imported goods 33. One of the main changes in the market in Europe is that _______. A) there are more home produced goods that imported goods on the market B) companies only have to pay one tax when operating in a member country C) there are no more Europe-wide business operations D) small companies are allowed to combine into larger ones 34. America put more people in prison in the 1990s than in any decade in its history. That started a debate over the wisdom of spending billons of dollars to keep nearly 2 million people locked up. According to statistics, the United States ends 1999 with 1,983,084 men and women in prisons. That shows an increase nearly 840,000 prisoners during the 1990s and makes the United States the country with the highest prison population in the world. With the cost of housing a prisoner at about $20,000 a year, the cost in 1999 keeping all these prisoners behind bar is about $39 billion. Some experts argue that the money is well spent, saying the cost of keeping prisoners behind back doesn’t seem much in comparison to the cost of crime to society. They also point out that the rise in the prisoner population in the 1990s coincided with (与……相一致) a steady drop in the US crime rates. It is reported that serious crime has decreased for seven years continuously. ―There are a noticeable number of people who don’t do crimes because they don’t want to go to prison,‖ they say. 21. The cupboards in kitchen were full of things which she did not need. Her husband tried to advise her against buying things but failed. She dreamed of the day when the manager of the supermarket would approach her and say: ―Madam, this is Your Lucky Day. She dashed back to the supermarket, got the tea and went towards the cash-desk. The caverns have been known and used since the days of the Cherokee Indian nation. The cave expands into a series of huge rooms from a small opening on the side of the mountain. Approximately one mile from the entrance, in a room called ―The Council Room,‖ many Indian artisfacts have been found. Some of the items discovered include pottery, arrowheads, weapons, and jewelry. For many years there were persistent rumors of a large underground lake somewhere in a cave, but it was not discovered until 1905. In that year, a thirteen-year-old boy named Ben Sands crawled through a small opening three hundred feet underground. He found himself in a large cave half filled with water. Today tourists visit the Lost Sea and ride far out onto it in glass-bottomed boats powered by electric motors. More than thirteen acres of water have been mapped out so far and still no end to the lake has been found. Even though teams of divers have tried to explore the Lost Sea, the full extent of it is still unknown. 66. The Lost Sea is unique because it is ________. Eating breakfast at the start of the day, we have all been told, and told again, is as necessary as putting gasoline in the family car before starting a trip. But for many people the thought of food first thing in the morning is by no means a pleasure. So despite all the efforts, they still take no breakfast. Between 1977 and 1983, the latest year for which figures are available, the number of people who didn’t have breakfast, increased by 33 percent. For those who feelpain of guilt about not eating breakfast, however, there is some good news. Several studies in the last few years indicate that, for adults especially, there may be nothing wrong with omitting breakfast. ―Going without breakfast does not affect performance,‖ said Arrold E. Bender, former professor of the nutrition at Queen Elizabeth College in London, ―nor does giving people breakfast improve performance.‖ Scientific evidence linking breakfast to better health or better performance is surprisingly inadequate, and most of the recent work involves children, not adults, ―The literature‖, says one researcher, Dr. Erresto at the University of Texas, ―is poor‖. 71. The latest year for which figures could be obtained is _______. A. the year the author wrote the article B. 1977 C. any year between 1997 and 1983 D. 1983 72. For those who do not take breakfast, the good news is that _______. A. several studies have been done in the past few years B. the omission of breakfast does no harm to one’s health C. adults have especially made studies in this field D. eating little in the morning is good for health 73. ―…nor does giving people breakfast improve performance‖ means ______. A. anyone without breakfast does improve his performance B. not giving people breakfast improve performance C. having breakfast does not improve performance, either D. people having breakfast do improve their performance 74. The word ―literature‖ in the last sentence refers to _______. A. stories, poems, plays, etc. B. written works on a particular subject C. any printed material D. the modern literature of America 75. What is implied but NOT stated by the author is that _______. A. breakfast does not affect performance B. Dr. Erresto is engaged in research work at an institution of higher learning C. not eating breakfast might affect the health of children D. Professor Bender once taught college courses in nutrition in London Passage Four About 35% of all high school graduates in America continue their education in an institution of higher learning. The word college is used to refer to either a college or a university. These institutions offer four-year programs that lead to a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or Bachelor Science (B.S.) degree. Some students attend a junior college (providing only a two-year program) for one to two years before entering a four-year college as a sophomore (二 年级 六年级体育公开课教案九年级家长会课件PPT下载六年级家长会PPT课件一年级上册汉语拼音练习题六年级上册道德与法治课件 生) or junior (三年级生). It is generally easier to be accepted at a state university than at a private one. Most private schools require strict entrance examinations and a high grade point average (GPA), as well as specific college prep classes in high school. Private schools cost considerably more than state colleges and famous private schools are very expensive. Poorer students can sometimes attend, however, by earning scholarships. Some college graduates go on to earn advanced masters or doctoral degrees in grad (graduate) school. Occupations in certain fields such as law or medicine require such advanced studies. Since college costs are very high, most students work at part-time jobs. Some have full-time jobs and go to school part-time. Often some will take five or more years to complete a four-year program because of money / job demands on their time. While the college and work demands take up the great part of a student’s time, most still enjoy social activities. Sports, dances, clubs, movies, and plays are all very popular. However, gathering together for long, philosophical talks at a favorite meeting place on or near the university is probably the most popular activity. 76. College education is _______ in America. A. quite common B. very rare C. something difficult D. almost impossible 77. Which of the following is NOT required for entering most private schools. A. entrance examinations B. taking part in many activities C. GPA D. college prep classes 78. How can poor studentsattend private schools? A. Only by working at part-time jobs. B. If you hired someone to do house hold work and you were able to control what they did and how they did it, you had a household employee; this is true even if you gave the employee freedom for action. What matters is that you had the right to control the details of how the work was done. For example, you paid Betty Oak to babysit(临时照看孩子) your child and do light homework 4days a weak in your home. Betty followed your specific instructions about household and child care duties. You provided the household equipment and supplies Betty needed to do her work. Betty is your household employee. Household work is done in or around your home. Some examples of workers who do household work are: babysitters, caretakers, cleaning people, drivers, health aides(助手), housekeepers, private nurses, yard workers. If a worker is your employee, it does not matter whether the work is full or part time or whether you hired the worker through an agency or from a list provided by an agency or association. Also, it does not matter if the wages paid are for work done hourly, daily, weekly, or by the job. Cash wages include wages paid by checks, money orders, etc. Cash wages do not include value of food, lodging, clothing, or other non-cash items you give a household employee. 46. A household employee is someone ______. For years scientists have asked themselves this question. Does laughter help us to survive in any way? The answer seems to be like this: smiling and laughter help us relax, reducing tension(紧张) and preventing illnesses which are caused by stress. Laughter really is the best medicine! But if you are unhappy, it cannot do you any good to smile, can it? Not true. Obviously, the positive effects of smiling are just the same whether you feel like smiling or not. Scientists in California asked a group of actors to act five different feelings: happiness, sadness, anger, surprise and fear just using their faces. Changes in their heart rate, blood pressure and temperature were written down. Most of the feelings they acted did not cause changes, but when the actors smiled their heart rate and their blood pressure went down. So even if we feel sad inside, smiling seems to make us feel better. A sense of humor also helps to keep things on their positive side. Interfering friends or a flat tire (轮胎漏气) won’t seem so bad if you can see the funny side. So if you find yourself in a stressful situation, try to imagine how it must seem to an outside with a sense of humor and let yourself laugh it off. A scientist writes: ―If you try to show a positive reaction and start to laugh, you will actually become happier.‖ 51. According to the writer, laughter and smiling_______. In that period, he has worked in several cities including Nanchang, Wuhan, and now Nanchang. His first job, also his longest, was for a State-owned enterprise producing communication products and lasted one year. His last job, also his shortest, was in designing web pages and lasted three months. ―I am not the most frequent changer of jobs in this industry,‖ Yang said. ―Working in IT (information technology) companies, I have become accustomed to welcoming new colleagues today and to seeing them off the next month.‖ ―I have always been in a turbulent (动荡的) situation, and no job gives me a feeling of stability,‖ In sharp contrast with Yang, Wendy, a lawyer in the Nanchang branch of a Beijing-based big law firm, dared not ask for a half a day’s leave to go hospital when she was suffering from a serious cold and cough. ―The boss warns us to work 24 hours a day and you would be mad to ask for leave for illness‖ said Wendy. So she would work until midnight and give herself medicine she bought to work. ―It’s not easy to get a suitable position nowadays. The boss can easily replace you with someone from the lines of applicants waiting outside the door for your position.‖ She said. 56. Yang is an employee who_______. A) a textbook B) an advertisement C) an instruction book D) a news report Unemployment may be one of the biggest problems our people as well as our government are faced with today. According to an official report, in one big city alone, since 1986, nearly 1,000,000 adult workers have lost their jobs because of factory closing and cutbacks either temporarily laid off or permanent forced to retire. Many people, especially the policy makers, believe that forcing adult workers, those who are over 45 to retire is an effective means to relieve the tension of unemployment, for it can provide more job opportunities for the jobless young. But they fail to notice that forcing a person who is still able to work and has a family to support to retire brings serious financial problems as well as emotional and physical ones. They also fail to realize that actually, workers aged 45-60 tend to be more stable, more skillful and more experienced than workers of any other ages, that, to some extent, this age is the prime time for one’s productivity and creativity. To force them to retire is a huge waste of the nation’s best resources. On the contrary, if we turn our attention to the other end of the range of ages, a more effective way might appear. Today only 3% school leavers are allowed to go to college, leaving the majority of the young people under 18 without adequate preparation to join the labor force. If, however, more of them are able to attend college and begin fulltime employment at later age, more job opportunities will be created as the number of years that an average person works fulltime shrinks. Most importantly, we should not be merely satisfied to solve the problem of unemployment, but rather we should improve the quality of the work force at the same time by keeping the skilled adults and employing the well educated young. 61. Forcing middle aged persons to retire might cause ________. A) the loss of valuable resources B) shortage of the work force C) elderly people to feel upset D) families to be unstable 62. The word ―prime‖ in line 7, para .2. most probably means____. A) first B) early C) major D) spring 63. Which of the following suggestions did the writer make? ______. D) Policy makers should create more job opportunities. 64. What is the writer’s attitude towards the present situation of employment?__ A) Concerned B) Hopeless C) Interested D) Satisfied 65. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. Passage one Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage. In the past, a city’s major shopping district was in its downtown area. People could get downtown more easily than they could get to other parts of the city. Before the 1960s, the best way to travel in a city was on a street-car, a subway, a railroad, or an elevated train. All of these ran on tracks that led downtown. As our cities grew outward, people living far from the center of town needed a place they could drive to quickly. Driving downtown was difficult. Finding a parking space downtown was something almost impossible. People also needed a shopping place where they could park easily. To meet the shopping needs of people living in the suburbs, groups of businesses moved farther out, too. Today, most suburbs have large shopping centers. Modern and well-planned shopping centers are built on large areas of ground. They have even more space for parking than they do for stores. The shopping centers have many different kinds of stores. Often, the shoppers can do all their shopping in one place. The very large shopping centers have malls which make shopping pleasant. The mall is an area between stores set aside for walking. Shoppers can stroll(漫步)from store to store and enjoy beautiful fountains, statues, and plants. There are benches so that shoppers may rest. Some shopping centers have malls with roofs that protect shoppers from the weather outside. 21. The first paragraph tells us that in the past ________. A) few people drove cars to do shopping B) it was convenient to do shopping downtown C) people liked to live in downtown areas D) street-cars were the main vehicle within a city 22. We can conclude from the passage that ________. A) suburban areas are beautiful and pleasant places B) elevated trains will be built to connect shopping centers C) only city people visit big shopping centers D) suburban people will have more shopping centers Passage Two Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage. When I arrived in Beijing more than five years ago, I had already given blood 79 times. I wanted to continue to be a donor(献血者). But entering a Red Cross clinic(诊所)in Beijing, I was surprised to be received as a hero. For me, a blood donation was simply a good habit and gift of love to humans. In Canada, donors can give 450 ml each time, every 51 days. That means six times a year. In China, we can give only 200 ml, every four months. In 1984, there were only 19 donors in Beijing who offered their blood for free. One year later, there were 141. In 1986, 1,083, and so on until the figure reached 10,046 in 1990, 14,016 in 1992 and more than double that the following year. There were 41,037 in 1994, and my statistics stop here. I’m so glad to see that the Chinese have understood that giving blood is not dangerous, and that it’s a way to say, in a real communist spirit, ―Brother, I love you‖. In fact, every time I give blood, I think of my blood running in a man or a woman’s veins(血管). Through donation thirteen Chinese have become my relatives now. Giving blood is like giving birth. Some of these thirteen people may have died without my donation; doesn’t that make it worth becoming a volunteer(志愿者)? What makes me even happier is when I can convince a Chinese friend to come with me and become a donor too. Things have become easier since May 1, 1996. A Hong Kong donor offered a well-equipped mobile unit to the Red Cross here. The vehicle stands in front of the Xidan Shopping Mall every Wednesday and Sunday morning, from May to the end of October. Donors just need a few minutes. I hope this public example will encourage new donors, and blood donation will become a social trend among the population. 26. When the writer first went to the Red Cross clinic in Beijing to donate his blood he was surprised ____. A) how he was respected by the people there B) what a good habit blood donation is C) that donors only gave 200 ml each time in China D) that most Chinese people were willing to donate blood 27. The number of voluntary blood donors in Beijing in 1993 is ____. A) more than 30,000 B) more than 28,000 C) more than 15,000 D) more than 14,000 28. According to the writer, more and more Chinese are giving blood free because _______. A) they know the advantage of blood donation B) they have learned how to donate blood C) they have realized its great significance D) they know it’s a way to show their generosity 29. The word ―that‖ in Line 3, Para. 4 mostly probably means ____. A) Becoming a volunteer B) donating blood C) having relatives D) saving people’s life 30. Passage one Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage. College is a new and challenging experience, and new and challenging experiences tend to produce stress. Consequently, stress is a common problem that many college students must face. How to reduce stress 1. Eliminate the source of stress. Identify possible sources of stress, and work toward eliminating them. If a math course is creating stress, for instance, take action: go to the learning lab or math lab for assistance or inquire about instructions. 2. Establish a daily routine. To eliminate daily hassles(混乱) and make daily tasks as simple as possible, establish a daily routine. A routine eliminates the need to make numerous small decisions, thus giving you a sense of ―smooth sailing‖. 3. Review your achievements. When you feel pressures, stop and review what you have already achieved that day and that week. This review will give you confidence that you can handle the work load. A positive attitude goes a long way in overcoming stress. 4. Get physical exercise. Exercise often releases tension, promotes a general feeling of wellness, and improves self-concept. Many students report that as little as 30 minutes of exercises produces immediate relaxations. 5. Get involved with campus activities. Some students become so involved with their course that they do little else but study or worry about studying. In fact, they feel guilty or stressed when they are not studying. What is exactly a lie? Is it anything we say which we know is untrue? Or is it something more than that? For example, suppose a friend wants to borrow some money from you, you say: ―I wish I could help you but I’m short of money myself.‖ In fact, you are not short of money but your friend is in the habit of not paying his debts and you don’t want to hurt his feelings by reminding him of this. Is this really a lie? A scientific study of lying shows women are better liars (说谎 者) than men, particularly when telling ―a white lie‖, such as when a woman at a party tells another woman that she likes her dress when she really thinks it looks terrible. However, this is only one side of the story. Other researches show that men are more likely to tell more serious lies, such as making a promise which they have no intention (意图)of fulfilling. This is the kind of lie politicians and businessmen are supposed to be particularly skilled at: the lie from which the liar hopes to profit or gain in some way. Research has also been done into the way people’s behavior changes in a number of small, unimportant ways when they lie. It has been found that if they are sitting down at the same time, they tend to move about in their chairs more than usual. To the trained observer they are saying, ―I wish I were somewhere else now.‖ 26. This passage tells us that telling lies is ___________. A) often necessary in order to avoid being defeated B) quite bad because people ought to be honest C) sometimes necessary in order not to hurt other’s feelings D) usually bad if you are talking with a good friend 27. The writer says that women are better liars than men because __________. A) their lies are easier to be accepted by men B) men are not as skillful as women in telling lies C) they often have a good intention in telling lies D) women tell fewer lies than men do 28. A ―white lie‖ means a lie that ___________. A) is told with a good intention B) is quite unbelievable C) is almost true to the fact D) often has a bad purpose 29. Politicians and businessmen are supposed to be skilled at telling lies that______. A) will allow them to gain some benefits B) seem to be strange but interesting C) can make women believe to be true D) can keep better relations with others 30. It can be concluded from the passage that _________. A) there is a simple way of finding out if someone is lying B) people’s behaviors sometimes can tell us they are lying C) people often repeat what they are saying when telling a lie D) in some situations women are most likely to tell a lie Passage Three Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage. Unemployment may be one of the biggest problems our people as well as our government are faced with today. According to an official report, in one big city alone, since 1986, nearly 1,000,000 adult workers have lost their jobs because of factory closings and cutbacks--either temporarily(暂时) laid off or permanently forced to retire. Many people, especially the policy makers, believe that forcing adult workers, those who are over 45, to retire is an effective means to relieve the tension of unemployment, for it can provide more job opportunities for the jobless young. On the contrary, if we turn our attention to the other end of the age line, a more effective way might emerge. Today, only 3% of school-leavers are allowed to go to college, leaving the majority of the young people under 18 without adequate preparation to join the labor force. If, however, more of them are able to attend college and begin full-time employment at a later age, more job opportunities will be created. Most importantly, we should not be satisfied merely to solve the problem of unemployment, but rather, we should improve the quality of the work force at the same time-by keeping the skilled adults and accepting the well-educated young. 31. Forcing middle-aged persons to retire might cause______. A) the loss of valuable resources B) shortage of the work force C) elderly people to feel upset D) families to be unstable 32. The word ―prime‖ in Line 7 Para 2 may be replaced by ―______‖ A) first B) early C) major D)spring 33. Which of the following suggestions did the writer make? ________. A) Young people should work harder in order to go to college. B) Colleges should be open to more high school-leavers. C) The old should be allowed to work as long as they want to. D) Policy makers should create more job opportunities. 34. What is the writer’s attitude towards the described employment situation? __ A) Concerned B) Hopeless C) Doubted D) Satisfied 35. The best title for this passage might be ―_______‖ A) How to Solve Unemployment Problem? B) Should People Be Forced to Retire? C) Why Don’t We Educate the Young? D) Are the Policy Makers Wise? People use them on trains and airplanes, in airports and hotels. These computers connect people to their workplace. In the United States today, they also connect students to their classmates. Westlake College in Virginia will start a laptop computer program that allows students to do schoolwork anywhere they want. Within five years, each of the 1500 students at the college will get a laptop. Westlake College has started a large computer program for its students. With laptop computers, the students will be connected not only to the Internet but also to libraries. In addition, they can use e–mail to ―speak‖ with their teachers, their classmates, and their families. Unemployment may be one of the biggest problems our people as well as our government are faced with today. According to an official report, in one big city alone, since 1986, nearly 1,000,000 adult workers have lost their jobs because of factory closings and cutbacks---either temporarily(暂时) laid off or permanently forced to retire. Many people, especially the policy makers, believe that forcing adult workers, those who are over 45, to retire is an effective means to relieve the tension of unemployment, for it can provide more job opportunities for the jobless young. But they fail to notice that forcing a person who is still able to work and has a family to support to retire brings serious financial problems as well as emotional and physical ones. They also fail to realize that actually, workers aged 45-60 tend to be more stable, more skillful and more experienced than workers of any other ages, that to some extent this age is the prime time for one’s productivity and creativity. To force them to retire is a huge waste of the nation’s best resources. A) the loss of valuable resources C) elderly people to feel upset B) shortage of the work force D) families to be unstable 32. The word ―prime‖ in Line 8 Para 2 may be replaced by ―______‖. A) first B) early C) major D)spring 33. Which of the following suggestions did the writer make? _______. A) Young people should work harder in order to go to college. B) Colleges should be open to more high school-leavers. C) The old should be allowed to work as long as they want to. D) Policy makers should create more job opportunities. 34. What is the writer’s attitude towards the described employment situation? _____. A) Concerned B) Hopeless C) Doubted D) Satisfied 35. The best title for this passage might be ―_______‖. A) Are the Policy Makers Wise? B) Should People Be Forced to Retire? C) Why Don’t We Educate the Young? D) How to Solve Unemployment Problem? Passage Four Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage. A scientific study of lying shows women are better liars (说谎 者) than men, particularly when telling a ―white lie‖, such as when a woman at a party tells another woman that she likes her dress when she really thinks it looks terrible. However, this is only one side of the story. Other researches show that men are more likely to tell more serious lies, such as making a promise which they have no intention of fulfilling. This is the kind of lie politicians and businessmen are supposed to be particularly skilled at: the lie from which the man hopes to profit or gain in some way. Research has also been done into the way people’s behavior changes in a number of small, unimportant ways when they lie. It has been found that if they are sitting down at the same time, they tend to move about in their chairs more than usual. To the trained observer they are saying ―I wish I were somewhere else now.‖ 36. This passage tells us that telling lies is ___________. A) often necessary in order to avoid defeated in an argument B) sometimes necessary if you don’t want to hurt someone else C) quite bad because people ought to be honest D) usually bad if you are talking with a good friend 37. The writer says that women are better liars than men because __________. A) their lies are easier to be accepted by men B) men are not as skillful as women in telling lies C) they often have a good intention in telling lies D) women tell fewer lies than men do 38. A ―white lie‖ means a lie that ___________. A) is told with a good intention B) is quite unbelievable C) is almost true to the fact D) often has a bad purpose 39. Politicians and businessmen are supposed to be skilled at telling such lies as____. A) may keep better relations with others B) seem to be strange but interesting C) can make others believe it to be true D) will allow them to gain some benefits 40. It can be concluded from the passage that _________. A) there is a simple way of finding out if someone is lying B) people’s behaviors sometimes can tell us they are lying C) people often repeat what they are saying when telling a lie D) in some situations women are most likely to tell a lie Part ? This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle. During the hours when you labor through your work you may say that you're "hot". That's true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people the peak comes during the forenoon (午前). For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues (独白)as: "Get up, John! You'll be late for work again!" The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Much family quarreling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has. You can't change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr. Kleitman believes. Maybe you're sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. Counteract (阻碍) your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to. If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won't change your cycle, but you'll get up steam and work better at your low point. Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a leisurely yawn (呵欠) and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Whenever possible, do routine work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy or concentration (专注) for your sharper hours. 1. If a person finds getting up early a problem, most probably ______. A. he is a lazy person B. he refuses to follow his own energy cycle C. he is not sure when his energy is low D. he is at his peak in the afternoon or evening 2. A. change his energy cycle B. overcome his laziness C. enable him to concentrate on your routine work D. go to bed earlier 4. You are advised to rise with a yawn and stretch because it will ______. A. help to keep your energy for the day's work B. help you to control your temper early in the day C. enable you to concentrate on your routine work D. keep your energy cycle under control all day 5. Which of the following statements is NOT true? A. Getting off to work with a minimum effort helps save one's energy. B. Dr. Kleitman explains why people reach their peaks at different hours of day. C. Habit helps one adapt to his own energy cycle. D. Children have energy cycles, too. Passage 2 Some people believe that international sport creates goodwill between the nations and that if countries play games tighter they will learn to live together. Others say that the opposite is true: that international contests encourages false national pride and lead to misunderstanding and hatred. There is probably some truth in both arguments, but in recent years the Olympic Games have done little to support the view that sport encourages international brotherhood. Not only was there the tragic incident involving the murder of athletes, but the Games were also ruined by lesser incidents caused principally by minor national contests. One country received its second-place medals with visible indignation after the hockey final. There had been noisy scenes at the end of the hockey match, the losers objecting to the final decisions. They were convinced that one of their goals should not have been disallowed and that their opponents’ victory was unfair. Their manager was in a rage when he said:‖ This wasn’t hockey. Hockey and the International Hockey Federation are finished.‖ The president of the Federation said later that such behavior could result in the suspension of the team for at least three years. Incidents of this kind will continue as long as sport is played competitively rather than for the love of the game. The suggestion that athletes should compete as individuals, or in non-national teams, might be too much to hope for. But in the present organization of the Olympics there is far too much that encourages aggressive patriotism. 6. According to the author, recent Olympic Games have__________________. D. None of the above Passage 3 When you are arranging the resume, list vital personal information first, such as name, address, and phone number. If you feel some of the jobs you will be applying for will require a certain level of education, place the information about your education next. From there on, list the most impressive categories first. If your school activities all point in the direction of your career, start with them. If your previous employment is more impressive, lead with that. Within each category you can list items from most recent to least recent or from most impressive to least impressive. For example, if you held a full-time job in TV station last summer and are now working as a part-time shoe store clerk, you will want to list the TV station experience first. Remember, people read from top to bottom and left to right. Do not construct a resume as you would a dramatic story —leading to a climax. Most employers may not bother to read to the end if they do not see potential at the beginning. And that brings up another point. Try to confine your resume to one page because that is all the busy employer will probable read. If you have many concrete items, fill the page with those. If you do not have these, then use the more subjective categories such as strong points and career objectives. Do not construct a resume that only covers the top half of the page. If your information is limited, center round it and spread it out. There is no right or wrong way to prepare a resume, but there is a way that is best for you. Don’t hurry. Prepare a number of drafts and let them sit while you think of improvements. A resume is one of the most important documents you will ever prepare, and it should be undertaken with the greatest care. 11. Which of the following is the best order, as indicated in the first paragraph? A. Name, address, phone number, education, hobbies. B. Name, education, address, phone number. C. A. is sometimes difficult to decide B. depends on the importance of the items. C. has a routine D. is apparent 13. By ―potential‖(Line 7, Para 2), the author means ― ‖. A. power B. details C. dramatic story D. qualifications 14. ―Confine your resume to one page.‖ This is a suggestion that you write it . A. short B. long C. neatly D. concretely 15. Which of the following statements is false? A. It is advisable to make several drafts when preparing a resume. B. One had better not construct a resume in a couple of lines. C. This passage suggests the right way to prepare a resume. D. The structure of a resume is completely different from that of a thrilling story. Passage 4 Time passed and my cards sold well. My enthusiasm for the greeting card business grew quickly. All along, I had been drawing fantasy art: clowns (丑角), dragons, castles, etc. With the birth of my first son in 1980, the content of my work underwent (经历) a pretty dramatic change. Fantasy went out of the window, and I began to illustrate reality. In the spring of 1983, we, The Mary Engelbreit Greeting Card Company, took our 12 little designs to New York to exhibit them at the National Stationery (文具) Show. I remember how big the show was.
