[精彩]the rise of morden china(2) Preface to the Second Edition Momentous events have occurred in China since the appearance of the first edition in 1970. The effects of the Cultural Revolution continue to reverberate and a reassessment of the ramifications of this powerful movement is essential. The rise and fall of Lin Piao had far-reaching repercussions on the power structure of the party, the government, and the armed forces, complicating still further the leadership succession problem. Internationally, in the face of worsening relations with the Soviet Union, which threatened war, China made a drastic foreign policy shift, resulting in her admission to the United Nations, détente with the United States, and diplomatic recognition by more than a hundred countries - a state of affairs substantially affecting the future of Taiwan. These major developments prompted the author to prepare a second edition, which includes five new chapters (27-31) dealing with the Cultural Revolution, the Lin Piao episode and its aftermath, the Sino-Soviet split, the Sino-American détente, the Sino-Japanese rapprochement, and the Nationalist rule on Taiwan. A new section on “The Future of China” has been added to the Epilogue. Numerous corrections and additions have also been made in the earlier parts of the book in light of scholarship that has become available since the first edition. New materials have been incorporated in connection with Emperor K’ang-his’s daily working schedule and the Grand Council in chapter 2, the clan and the life of metropolitan officials in chapter 4, the Yenan experience and foreign observation in chapter 24, and the American role in the Chinese civil war of 1945-49 in chapter 25. Chapter 26has been substantially revised. A new index has been prepared and reading lists updated. In preparing the second edition the author has benefited from suggestions and criticisms from the many reviewers of the first edition, and he wishes to express his gratitude to them all. He has also received help from his assistants, Edwin Clausen, John Oakland, and Pak-wah Leung, in bibliographical and editorial matters, proofreading, and index-making; To the author’s longtime loyal typist, Alice Kladik, special thanks are due. Lastly, the author thanks Ann Lindsay and others of the Oxford University Press for supervising the production of the second edition. Santa Barbara, California I.C.Y.H.
