Chances are that we’ll also have some unwanted guests in the form of mosquitoes. Mosquitoes seem to have a powerful ability to locate us. Zain Syed, a mosquito biologist with the University of Notre Dame’s Eck Institute for Global Health, has gone a long way toward determining how they do it. Zain studies olfaction (嗅觉) in mosquitoes and other insects and he points out that mosquitoes have a strong sense of smell. A big part of their brains are devoted to this sense. Only female mosquitoes feed on blood meals and they use the blood to produce eggs. And female mosquitoes find their blood meals through the use of smell. An understanding of the olfactory behavior of mosquitoes that lead them to feed on humans can play an important role in developing more effective methods of mosquito and disease control. Zain is also researching the role that plants play in mosquito behavior. He points out that despite our occasional feeling that we are surrounded by lots of hungry mosquitoes, they spend a relatively short amount of time feeding. Rather, they spend considerable time on plants taking the sugars that provide energy for those occasions when they do feed. The Notre Dame researcher’s lab is studying what smells plants that mosquitoes are attracted to give off. Again, a deeper understanding of the role of the chemicals produced by plants and how mosquitoes select plants to obtain their energy sources can lead to better control and help get rid of them. For many of us, better mosquito control techniques would result in greater comfort and convenience when we are outdoors. In many areas of the world, however, mosquito control if a matter of life and death. A better understanding of the role smell plays in mosquito behavior can offer important clues that may lead to new control methods. 56. In the research talked about in the passage Zain Syed studies____________. A. the behaviors of mosquitoes and factors concerning the behaviors B. ways to kill mosquitoes when we are picnicking or socializing outside C. how mosquitoes select plants into which the lay their eggs D. the difference between male and female mosquitoes in feeding habits 57. What role do plants play in mosquito behavior? A. They control the behavior of mosquitoes. B. They give off smells to attract mosquitoes. C. Mosquitoes like to take in sugar from plants. D. Mosquitoes enjoy staying long on plants. 58. Mosquitoes have a powerful ability to locate us because______. A. they have a strong sense of direction B. they have a strong sense of smell C. they have a large size of brain D. they have a preference for blood 59. Zain syed studies mosquitoes so that ______. A. he can get on well with mosquitoes B. he can find best ways to control mosquitoes C. he can enjoy a good time outdoors D. he can develop mosquitoes in his lab B “My energy is soaring!” — Adrienne Farr Adrienne’s busy career made it hard for her to follow a healthy diet. We all want it, but can we all have it? Genuine happiness is written all over our faces when we are truly contented, and, likewise, a forced smile does nothing to hide underlying sadness. Believing that everyone can create their own lasting joy, Matthieu Ricard has been declared the Happiest Man in the World. Ricard earned his “happiest man” status after a series of laboratory tests in 2004. Ricard has shared his thoughts on happiness with a worldwide audience. As an experienced speaker, he has explained his insights into happiness to everyone, from students to corporate groups. Looking inwards to find joy rather than relying on outer conditions, he believes, is the way to achieve well-being. “It’s quite clear that the outer conditions are not enough. The way we interpret those outer conditions in our inner experience is what determines either a sense of well-being or misery. We love to go jogging for fitness and we do all kinds of things to remain beautiful, yet we spend surprisingly little time taking care of what matters most: the way our minds function. It’s the essential thing that determines the quality of our experience.” Besides this, Ricard stresses that it is not what’s happening around us that makes us unhappy, but rather the way we choose to react to it. The pursuit of happiness is becoming a modern obsession(痴迷). As life becomes more complex, our ability to process our reactions to various outside influences comes under strain. “Genuine happiness” he says, “doesn’t mean pleasant feelings one after the other. It’s more like a series of qualities that we can develop as skills — like openness, genuine love, compassion, inner strength and inner peace.” 64. Ricard has been declared the Happiest Man in the World _______. A. because he has shared his thoughts on happiness with a worldwide audience B. after he has explained his insights into happiness to everyone C. after a series of laboratory tests D. because he tries his best to achieve happiness and well-being 65. According to Ricard, what is the best way to achieve well-being? A. Interpreting those outer conditions in our inner experience. B. Looking inwards to find joy rather than relying on outer conditions. C. Spending little time taking care of what matters most. D. Reacting to various outside influences comes under strain. 66. What determines the quality of our experience? A. The way our minds react to outer conditions. B. Insights into happiness that we hold. C. The constant pursuit of happiness in our life. D. Those outer conditions affecting our happiness. 67. How can we pursuit happiness? A. Go jogging for happiness. B. Do everything to remain beautiful. C. Make sure that our minds are functioning normally. D. Develop necessary qualities. D Vacation is a time for renewal. In work, we are often called to think. Sometimes, it’s good to give our brains a rest. Without a break, we may not be able to perform up to our potential. This can be a problem, not only for the employee, but for the employer as well. “The main benefit of vacation is for the worker to come back energized,” says Weaver. “If they haven’t had a break, then they’re not coming back with new energy. They haven’t had a chance to step back and get perspective, and come back with renewed enthusiasm.” Long working hours without a break, insecurity about one’s job, and other work-related issues can lead to burnout and stress. Humans can usually adapt to pressure, but not for a limitless amount of time. “It is a managerial problem of relating good workers and having them loyal to the firm while they’re there,” says David Maume, PhD, professor of sociology at the University of Cincinnati. He says burnout can also affect employees’ productivity, creativity, and effectiveness. In addition, high levels of stress are likely to be precursors (前兆) to depression, which can hit both the employer and employee’s pocketbook. Even people who manage to remain productive at work can have problems. If they’re always at work, then they’re not with their family and friends. If they’re working while on vacation, for the time that they’re on the job, they’re not really present. Friedman adds that an unbalanced emphasis on work can strain family and social life: “When you come up for air, you may see that you’re alone, or that your relationships have gone on without you.” 68. According to the text what’s the main benefit of the vacation? A. The worker can become more creative and effective. B. The worker can step back and get more excited. C. The worker can come back with new energy. D. The worker can adapt to pressure much better. 69. The underlined word “there” in the fourth paragraph probably mean ________. A. Vacation B. Home C. University D. Company 70. What’s the main idea of the text? A. Why the workers need a vacation. B. How to spend the vacation effectively. C. How to deal with the daily pressure. D. Why the workers need new energy. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余 选项。 How to beat insomnia and sleep easy Poor sleep – as anyone who suffers from it knows – can make life a misery. And it is taking its toll on the nation's health. According to the recently published Great British Sleep Survey, more than 51% of us now struggle to get a good night's sleep, with women three times more likely to be affected than men. Evidence shows that 93% of insomniacs report low energy levels and 83% complain of mood swings. Some 77% find it hard to concentrate, 64% say they are less productive at work, and 55% report relationship difficulties. 71 So how can we do something about poor sleep without pills? Most sleep experts think that the following do make a difference. 1. 72 It is very, very powerful, and we need to get it working for us: a person not sleeping well has first and foremost to allow sleep to do its work. Sleep is a process of letting go. 2. Most sleep problems are psychological obstacles that we put in sleep's way. Like all things we should do automatically, when we deliberately try to do them we screw up. __73 Recognize there's a right and a wrong kind of effort. Your role model is the “careless sleeper" 3. Go to sleep only when you feel sleepy and, if anything, shorten the time you try to sleep. A lot of people put good sleep beyond the achievable simply because they are so worried about not sleeping. Their sleep becomes worse. 74 That is because you do it with an intention to force yourself into sleep. 4. 75 A racing mind – what happened today, what's on tomorrow, what will the future hold? – is a huge obstacle to sleep. So take time before you go to bed: go through the day, think about tomorrow, put things in their boxes, make a list. Set your mind at rest. 5. Learn to value relaxation, and if necessary learn specific relaxation techniques. Above all, "Don't try too hard." But, of course, for some that is easier said than done. A. Put the day to bed long before putting yourself to bed. B. Recognize that sleep is not a lifestyle choice, it is a biological process. C. Sleep experts are trying to work out ways to deal with the problem. D. If you try to read a book in bed, it's never very successful. E. Keep you mind busy before you go to sleep. F. Even worse, long-term poor sleep can increase the risk health of problems. G. Adopt a relaxed, confident approach to sleep, not a nervous, panic-stricken one. It doesn’t matter to fail as long as you don’t give up. This year I am Senior 3, and I have six subjects to learn every day. School hours usually begin at 7:00 am and end at 8:30 pm. Sometimes, too, I surf the Internet to update and amuse myself. It’s been my dream to go to Peking University ever since I went to senior high school because of its strong cultural atmosphere as well as its high academic status. I’d appreciate it if you can tell me something about your school life as well. I’m looking forward to it. Best regards, Li Hua 附录音原文: (Text 1) M: Would you like to come for dinner at the weekend? Are you at all anxious or is opening night no longer bothering you? W: Well, I’m very pleased to have Malcolm Rush as a director. He doesn’t care whether you’re tired or not. He’ll just continue pushing until every scene is simply perfect. You don’t just learn the part- you live it, which takes away any fears you might have of not being able to persuade an audience you’re real. That’s very important. M: Malcolm does have a reputation of being quite the ruler. No one dares speak their opinions, I hear. W: Well, once you’ve proved yourself, it’s all about being open to changes. (Text 9) W: Right, perhaps you could tell me something about how you got interested in environmental science, and what experience you have in the subject. M: Well, I’ve always been attracted by plants and animals, and then last year a cousin of mine, Mike Proctor, invited me to Brazil, He’s the head of a project there ran by a European organisaiton. The organisation’s aim is to help groups of villages set up their own schools and medical centres. They also encourage agriculture and the setting up of businesses to sell local products. Anyway, it was during my stay I really began to understand the impact of climate change. I wanted to learn more about this, so I decided to take this course. W: And since you’ve been back, have you done anything to develop your interest in the area? M: Yes, I’ve read a book about energy saving. And I was particularly interested in how the Netherlands had begun to overcome the problem. The government has introduced some really interesting projects on energy saving in cities. There’s also a recycling project, which is saving a huge amount of our natural resources. What’s needed now, though, is to expand work like this across the world. W: Before we fish, have you got any questions about the course here at the college? M: Well, no, thank you for asking. . (Text 10) W: Ladies and gentlemen, it is my great pleasure to present the first meeting of the Woodville Lunch for Senior Citizens. We all hope that this will be a great success and that there will be more to come. I am extremely pleased that so many of you are able to be here today and I give a warm welcome to you all. I would like to say a particularly warm welcome to Joan Miller, who is ninety-four years young today. I’m sure that you will all join me in wishing Joan a very happy birthday. The aim of the club is, of course, not only to provide food, but also to provide companionship although it is extremely important that people of all ages eat nutritious food, and I can tell you now that it is delicious! I have already tasted it. However, the club exists not only to provide food and I’m sure that many of you would like to stay on after the lunch things have been cleared away so that you can have a chat. Today, we’re not in a hurry so that you can get to know each other. Indeed, I hope that will be the case because that will show that you are all enjoying yourselves and that is the main point of this club. Have fun! It doesn’t matter to fail as long as you don’t give up. To my opinion, it is hard to be successful. Challenges were a necessary part of your life as you grow up. And you won't necessary succeed in everything for the first time you try. That’s okay. Some of the most successful people in the world are the one who’ve had the most failure. J.K. Rowling, who wrote Harry Potter, had her first Harry Potter book was rejected 12 times before it was finally published. Michael Jordan was cut his high school basketball team. He lost hundreds of games and miss thousands of shots during his career. But he once said, “I have failed over and over and over again in my life.
