I don’t know how many of you know me. Not many I guess because we have not taken many classes together yet. Now I will introduce myself briefly. My name is Liu Gang. I am 19 years old and come from Beijing. I moved to Beijing with my parents at the age of 7. I miss the beautiful countryside where I spent my early childhood. I plan to pay a visit back there some time in the future. There are three members in my family. Both of my parents are workers. My father knows how to play the erhu and he taught me a little bit when he was not busy. In my spare time, I like reading, traveling, playing the erhu and doing sports. Basketball is my favorite sport. I also spend a lot of time online. I first learned about the Web when I was in junior high school. I have been in love with it ever since. Sometimes my friends ask me what I do online for so many hours everyday. I use the Web to study, read news, make new friends and search for information. Of course I play computer games too. I know computer games are additive, but I am sure I am in control of the computer, rather than being controlled by it. I am not very strong in English, but I know it’ll be very useful for my future career, because all people around me told me so, my uncle in particular. He is my father’s youngest brother and he is now living in the US. He is a programmer in Silicon Valley. He graduated from Tsinghua University. He asked me to do my best in English. My high school English teacher also did a lot to help me improve my English. I would not be standing here speaking to you today were it not for his help and encouragement. I will work hard in this semester together with every one of you here. It’s the Chinese mega hit called “Super-voice Girl” that some describe as a national obsession. So let’s meet the show’s breakout superstar. Take a look. Growing up the bustling city of Chengdu, China, Jane Zhang dreamed of becoming a singer. Her father earned a meager living as a truck driver. Her mother was an office assistant. At fifteen, Jane and her mother were left penniless after her father died. To earn money, Jane took a job singing at a local pub after school and soon became a local favorite. In 2005, she joined 120,000 singing hopefuls vying for a chance to compete on a new TV talent show called “The Mongolian Cow Sour Yogurt Super Girl”. Jane was chosen on the spot. Her stunning range, especially those high notes, earned her the nickname “the dolphin princess.” Wow! Four hundred million people, four hundred million people, tuned to see who would be China’s next super-voice girl and although Jane didn’t win, she is the one who shot the stardom. For three straight years she’s been named China’s best female artist and she’s topped the charts with a stunning 15 No. 1 hit singles, making her, making her American television début. Please welcome China’s Jane Zhang. I worked as a nurse anesthetist at Charity Hospital in New Orleans where I had got my nursing training. Leaving one-year-old Bill was hard for me but no better choice was available then. My parents helped me to take care of little Bill until he was four. Mother took him to see me twice in New Orleans and they came by train. Activity 1: Guess                                        Check l Beth’s appearance                            l Beth’s relationship with the author                l Beth’s relationship with the class                l Beth’s parents                                l Beth’s childhood                            l Beth’s dream of the future                    l Beth’s likes and dislikes                        l Beth’s academic performance                    Activity 2 1. I am very interested in this position and I am writing this letter to apply.  I am an eighth-grader. I am active, confident and cope well with people. I am a member of the varsity volleyball team. The sport not only strengthens my body, but also gives me confidence in myself. Last semester I took a part-time job as a campus guide. It was a great experience. I got to know different people and learned to communicate with others. The part-time working experience also taught me the importance of hard-working and self-respect. I used to be treated badly by my class and felt really bad about myself. But now I’ve recollected confidence in myself. Having been through all these difficulties, I trust I can do the job better than anybody else. Please give me favorable considerations. Your earliest reply will be highly appreciated. Background information 1. Bill Clinton: former US President (1946– ) Facts at a Glance Term: 42nd President of the United States (1993–2001) Born: August 19, 1946 in Hope, Arkansas Full Name: William Jefferson Clinton Education: Georgetown University (1968), attended Oxford   University (1968–1970), Yale Law School (1973) Religion: Baptist Marriage: Hillary Rodham on October 11, 1975 Children: Chelsea Victoria (1980) Career: Lawyer, public official Political Party: Democrat William Jefferson "Bill" Clinton (born William Jefferson Blythe III; August 19, 1946) is an American politician who served as the 42nd President of the United States from 1993 to 2001. Inaugurated at age 46, he was the third-youngest president. He took office at the end of the Cold War, and was the first president of the baby boomer generation. Clinton has been described as a New Democrat. Many of his policies have been attributed to a centrist Third Way philosophy of governance, while on other issues his stance was center-left. Born and raised in Arkansas, Clinton became both a student leader and a skilled musician. He is an alumnus of Georgetown University where he was Phi Beta Kappa and earned a Rhodes Scholarship to attend the University of Oxford. He is married to Hillary Rodham Clinton, who has served as the United States Secretary of State since 2009 and was the Senator from New York from 2001 to 2009. Both Clintons received law degrees from Yale Law School, where they met and began dating. As Governor of Arkansas, Clinton overhauled the state's education system, and served as Chair of the National Governors Association. Clinton was elected president in 1992, defeating incumbent president George H.W. Bush. As president, Clinton presided over the longest period of peacetime economic expansion in American history. He signed into law the North American Free Trade Agreement. He implemented Don't ask, don't tell, a controversial intermediate step to full gay military integration. After a failed health care reform attempt, Republicans won control of Congress in 1994, for the first time in forty years. Two years later, the re-elected Clinton became the first member of the Democratic Party since Franklin D. Roosevelt to win a second full term as president. He successfully passed welfare reform and the State Children's Health Insurance Program, providing health coverage for millions of children. Later, he was impeached for perjury and obstruction of justice in a scandal involving a White House intern, but was acquitted by the U.S. Senate and served his complete term of office. The Congressional Budget Office reported a budget surplus between the years 1998 and 2000, the last three years of Clinton's presidency.
