Pets on Campus
Currently, keeping pets such as dogs, cats and fishes on campus has aroused a heated argument. Some people strongly claim that pets on campus have excessive countering effects on college students, while others do not think so. As far as I am concerned, the benefits of keeping pets on campus are discussed from mental health, personal qualities, and animal protection on this issue.
To start with, keeping pets on campus is conducive to keeping students’ mental health. Latterly, a survey
conducted by the National Bureau of Statistics of China indicates that ninety percent university students suffer psychological illness, for instance, fatigue, neurasthenia and emotional instability, even suicide. Absolutely, through walking and talking to pets when students feel depressed, they will release from stress and be happy.
Next, pets on campus can cultivate college students` personal qualities. For example, during teaching the dog to sleep and move bowels in a right place, students can be more patient. Besides, by observing its life habits and healthy conditions,
students can be more considerate.
Last but not least, pets on campus can contribute to develop the awareness of animal protection. Chen Mingcai, the head of the Association of Small Animal Protection in Chongqing said the number of abandoned pets has decreased on campuses because college students who have had a close relationship with their pets have been more aware of protecting animals.
From the foregoing, we can safely draw a conclusion that it is advisable for college students to keep pets on campus because it can keep students’
mentally healthy, cultivate personal qualities and develop the awareness of animal protection.
