Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked [A], [B], [C] and [D]. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre. A few weeks ago, the Food Standards Agency (FSA. in the UK issued a report evaluating nutrient levels in organic versus non-organic foods like fruits, vegetables, meats, eggs, and dairy products. It is a complete, rigorous piece of research. And they found that, in terms of nutritional content, the differences between organic and non-organic foods are negligible. As the report states, "... organically and conventionally produced crops and livestock products are broadly comparable in their nutrient content." They did in fact find some nutritional differences between organic and non-organic foods, but concluded that it is "unlikely that these differences in nutrient content are relevant to consumer health." So here they have a nicely delimited (界定的) study of available research with rigorous standards and a fairly worded conclusion, all publicly available to download and read on the FSA website. The reaction, not surprisingly, was spectacular. The British tabloids alternately gloated (幸灾乐祸) with delight over the comeuppance(赢得的惩罚)of extravagant middle class shopping habits or frivolously attacked the study for insulting the people's common sense. But it was the reaction of the Soil Association, the leading British organic certification organization, which highlighted just how difficult it can be for good science to be understood. The Soil Association's response, published in papers across the land, entirely disregarded the intent of the study and instead argued that organic food is better for the environment and contains less pesticides than non- organic food. But in the very first paragraph of the report, the team states that they aren't looking at the impact on the environment of organic agriculture or the effect of pesticide use, both of which the FSA has extensively examined in other research. They are specifically looking at nutritional comparison. The Soil Association further argued that the FSA report had ignored studies that showed any benefit of organic food. As Ben Goldacre incisively dissected on his popular blog, Bad Science, the Soil Association's response was logically flawed and entirely beside the point. The FSA study is good science and by attacking, rather than endorsing it, the organic lobby in the UK has been plainly unscientific. It's hardly the right stance for an organization that carries su.ch widespread support from the well-educated, critical-thinking middle classes who choose to eat organic food. Any of the many other reasons to go organic—whether it is to avoid pesticides, to encourage better livestock practices, or to simply eat better tasting food—are sufficient to continue supporting the efforts of organic farmers. By misrepresenting the science and its intent, the Soil Association has damaged its credibility and objectivity, the very attributes that its organic label—a stamp of approval—is intended to convey. Which of the following is TRUE according to the finding of FSA? A The differences in nutrients between organic and non-organic foods are insignificant. B There is significant nutritional difference between organic and non-organic foods. C The differences in nutrient content are closely related with consumer health. D Organically and conventionally produced crops and livestock products are noticeable in their nutrient content. It is acomplete, rigorous piece of research. And they found that,in terms of nutritional content, the differences between organic and non-organic foods are negligible. What can be inferred from the reaction to FSA's report? A The report proves that middle class shopping habit is very reasonable. B The report reflects people's common sense. C The report is very difficult to be understood. D The report is very strikin 【正确答案】:D 【本题分数】:12.0分 【答案解析】 [深度点拨] 根据题干关键词the reaction to FSA's report定位到原文第三段第二句:The reaction, not surprisingly, was spectacular. The Soil Association's asserted that the FSA's report ______. A had noticed the impact of organic agriculture on the environment B had ignored to examine the effect of pesticide use C should be criticized for neglecting the benefit of organic food D has entirely disregarded the intent of the study 【正确答案】:C 【本题分数】:12.0分 【答案解析】 [深度点拨] 根据题干关键词the Soil Association, response,FSA's report定位到原文第四段第四句:The Soil Association further argued that the FSA report had ignored studies that showed any benefit of organic food. What's Ben Goldacre's opinion towards the Soil Association's response? A It is logic. B It is off the track. C It proposes the main point. D It is generally reasonabl 【正确答案】:B 【本题分数】:12.0分 【答案解析】 [深度点拨] 根据题干关键词Ben Goldacre's opinion, the Soil Association's response定位到原文第四段最后一句:As Ben Goldacre incisively dissected on his popular blog,Bad Science, the Soil Association's response was logically flawed and entirely beside the point. B项中的off the track是句中beside the point的同义转述。 What can we learn from the last paragraph? A The FSA's study has been proved unscientific. B The FSA's study is supported by the well-educated middle classes. C The FSA's study tells a lot about the benefit of organic food. Americans almost inevitably become Democrats or Republicans because there is usually no other place for them go to. Moreover, because the rivalry of these parties is very old, most Americans know where they belong in the system. As a consequence of the dominance of the major parties, most elected officials are either Republicans or Democrats. Attempts to break up this old political system have been made in every presidential election in the past one hundred years, but the system has survived all assaults. How does it happen that the system is so strongly rooted in American politics? The explanation is probably to be found in the way elections are conducted. In the United States, unlike countries with a parliamentary system of government, we elect not only the President, but a large number of other officials. We also elect congressmen from single-member districts. For example, we elect 435 members of the House of Representatives from 435 districts (there are a few exceptions), one member for each district. Statistically, this kind of election favors the major parties. The system of elections makes it easy for the major parties to maintain their dominant position, because they are likely to win more than their share of the offices. In over 200 years of constitutional history, Americans have learned much about the way in which thepolitical system can be managed so as to make possible the peaceful transfer of power from one party to the other. At the level of presidential elections, the party in power has been overturned by the party out of power nineteen times, almost once a decade. In the election of 1860, the political system broke down, and the Civil War, the worst disaster in American history, resulted. Our history justifies our confidence in the system but also shows that it is not foolproof. The second major party is able to survive a defeat because the statistical tendency that exaggerates the victory of the winning party operates even more strongly in favor of the second party against the third, fourth, and fifth parties. As a result, the defeated major party is able to maintain a monopoly of the opposition. The advantage of the second party over the third is so great that it is the only party that is likely to be able to overturn the party in power. It is able, therefore, to attract the support of everyone seriously opposed to the party in power. The second party is important as long as it can monopolize the movement to overthrow the party in power, because it is certain to come into power sooner or later. According to the passage, what's the fundamental reason for the coexistence of two major parties? A The election system. B The parliamentary system of government. C The large number of representatives. D The different election districts. 【正确答案】:A 【本题分数】:12.0分 【答案解析】 [深度点拨] 根据题干关键词the fundamental reason, coexistence of two major parties定位到原文第二段:... A It continued to exist along with the rivalry of these parties. B Americans are quite confident about it. C It is workable all the time. C Some towns that are frequently visited. D Big cities and some shopping malls. 【正确答案】:B 【本题分数】:7.0分 【答案解析】 [听力原文] Today there are many charitable organizations which specialize in helping the weary traveler. (26) Yet, the old tradition of hospitality to strangers is still very strong in the US, especially in the smaller cities and towns away from the busy tourist trails. "I was just traveling through, got talking with this American, and pretty soon he invited me home for dinner—amazing." (27) Such observations reported by visitors to the US are not uncommon, but are not always understood properly. The casual friendliness of many Americans should be interpreted neither as superficial nor as artificial, but as the result of a historically developed cultural tradition. As is true of any developed society, in America a complex set of cultural signals, assumptions, and conventions underlies all social interrelationships. And, of course, speaking a language does not necessarily mean that someone understands social and cultural patterns. (28)Visitors who fail to "translate" cultural meanings properly often draw wrong conclusions. For example, when an American uses the word "friend," the cultural implications of the word may be quite different from those it has in the visitor's language and culture. It takes more than a brief encounter on a bus to distinguish between courteous convention and individual interest. Yet, being friendly is a virtue that many Americans value highly and expect from both neighbors and strangers. 26. Q: Where can visitors experience the American hospitality most? D Don't remove the food stuck between your teet 【正确答案】:B 【本题分数】:7.0分 【答案解析】 [听力原文]  One of the great things about traveling around the world is all of the wonderful food you get to try. (29) Watch yourself when you start to reach for that food, though, or you just might offend someone. When it comes to table manners, what works in one country doesn't always go over in another. The United States has its own special dining customs that visitors should know about before sitting down to a meal. For example, (30) when food starts to arrive, you can't just dig in. It's considered rude to start eating before everyone at the table has received his or her meal. Once you start to chow down, it's important to remember to keep your elbows off the table and keep your mouth closed as you chew. Don't lean over and slurp from the plate on the table either. Food must be transported from the dish to your mouth with a fork or a spoon. (31) Never pick up your bowl or plate as you eat because this is especially considered rude beyond all belief. It is also considered rude to pick between your teeth where others can see you. Some restaurants usually do not supply toothpicks, so it is sometimes hard to decide when to remove food stuck between the teeth. It is usually best to excuse yourself and go to the bathroom. 29. D South America and western Europ 【正确答案】:D 【本题分数】:7.0分 【答案解析】 [听力原文]  Soccer is played by millions of people all over the world, but there have only been few players who were truly great. How did these players get that way—was it through training and practice, or are great players "born, not made"? First, these players came from places that have had famous stars in the past—players that a young boy can look up to and try to imitate. (32) In the history of soccer, only six countries have ever won the World Cup—three from South America and three from western Europe. There has never been a great national team—or a really great player—from North America or from Asia. Second, (33) these players have all had years of practice in the game. Alfredo Di Stefano was the son of a soccer player, as was Pele. Most players begin playing the game at the age of three or four. (34) Finally, many great players come from the same kind of neighborhood—a poor, crowded area where a boy's dream is not to be a doctor or lawyer, but to become a rich, famous athlete or entertainer. For example, Liverpool had one of the best English soccer teams in recent years. All great players have a lot in common, but that doesn't explain why they are great. (35) Hundreds of boys played in those Brazilian streets, but only one became Pele. The greatest players are born with some unique quality that sets them apart from all the others. 32. Internet business contributes 2.1%, or $ 300 billion, to the total GDP of the U. S. And IT and related online business may be faring better in this recession than they did in the dotcom bubble of 2000-2002, still growing revenue but at slower pace. Consumers are now making 10X of their retail purchases online, with the exception of groceries, on the Internet, and Internet-based advertising has increased four-fold since 2002 to more than $ 20 billion, said John Deighton, a professor of business administration at Harvard Business School, and one of the authors of the study along with Hamilton Consultants Inc. The study, considered independent, attempts to measure the so-called Internet economy. It was prepared for the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB. in New York, which represents a variety of Internet and media companies. It does not raise policy implications, but IAB officials said the data will help them make the case for self regulation on issues such as privacy. Randall Rothenberg, president and CEO of IAB, said the report is the "first rigorous, comprehensive look at the size, scope and impact of the interactive advertising ecosystem." Deighton said the finding could help make the case for a move away from employer-based health care, which he called something out of the Middle Ages, to a system that is good for people to start new businesses without having to provide health coverage. The study's job estimate is based on people who work directly in building or maintaining the Internet's infrastructure, conduct advertising and commerce over it, and other direct uses. The number of indirect jobs supported by Internet-related activities may raise the total number of jobs by 1.54 million, or to slightly more than 3 million supported jobs. E-commerce companies, as well as those that deliver the physical goods, were the major employers, with more than 500,000 of the 1.2 million jobs. Internet service providers followed at 181,000. Content-related employment was estimated at nearly 60,000, and software as a service, 31,500. John Yaglenski, who runs the independent Walt Disney World travel information site Intercot. com, along with 35 volunteers, was at the announcement today and said that that regulation that imposes new requirements and restricts information collection could have a serious impact. Yaglenski said he has privacy policies clearly outlined on his site and believes the industry can regulate itself. "If the government steps in and regulates the industry to the degree that it has done in some other areas, it could really affect our livelihood," he said. Okay, I sleep, but it's not nearly enough. I'm lucky if I get seven hours a night, and on the weekends? Let's just say the number decreases significantly. Judging by the long lines at the sixteen Starbucks I pass on my way to work, I'm not alone. Work, stress, and social lives all pose a devastating effect on our precious sleep cycles. The majority of us are not only lacking necessary sleep hours, but the quality of our sleep leaves something to be desired. Hoping to curb my morning dullness and mid-afternoon sleepiness, I consulted two professional sleep experts to find out how we can achieve the best kind of sleep—sleep that leaves us feeling rested, alert, and not so dependent on caffeine. Figure out your perfect number The oft-quoted "eight hours a night" is a rule not unlike "eight glasses of water a day"—good in theory, but too general. The amount of sleep one needs varies from person to person. "There is no magic number that works for everybody," says Dr. Tracy Kuo, a clinical psychiatrist and sleep disorder specialist at Stanford University Sleep Disorders Clinic. "As an individual, you need to figure out what your sleep need is." However, most doctors recommend getting somewhere between seven to eight hours of sleep. Dr. Kenneth Weeks, a cardiologist specializing in sleep disorders and their association with heart problems, suggests shooting for seven-and-a-half hours a night. A good night's sleep means we can function with a steady, healthy level of energy throughout the next day, so find the amount of hours that allows you to achieve this state. Make sleep a priority Both Dr. Kuo and Dr. Weeks concur that most of us don't realize the importance of sleep, and they caution that this is one of the worst mistakes we make. "A challenge we all face in modern life is valuing sleep enough,"Dr. Kuo explains. "Most people take time away from sleep to do things, so they're not letting themselves get enough sleep." Sleep restriction has been linked to many problems including mood disorders like depression and anxiety, weight gain, and a shorter life expectancy. Just as we have to make time for health-improving and preventative activities like exercise anti eating well, we should make sure to incorporate an adequate amount of sleep into our schedules, too. Limit eating and exercise prior to bedtime Eating a heavy meal or working out too close to bedtime can cause a poor quality of sleep because both lead to sleep fragmentation—waking up throughout the night. Dr. Kuo advises that people "need to have enough time for that activation level caused by exercise to decrease so that sleep is permitted." Both Kuo and Weeks recommend eating or exercising no closer than three to four hours before sleeping. Unfortunately, hectic schedules sometimes demand that our meal times and gym sessions occur later at night. And, as Dr. Kuo says, "If you go to bed starving, you're not going to go to sleep either." Try relaxing as much as possible after working out; lay down, take deep breaths, and focus on cooling down your body temperature. As for midnight snack attacks, Dr. Weeks recommends eating something "that dissolves quickly and won't sit in the stomach." He lists warm milk and crackers with a little peanut butter as good options. Pinpoint the negative effects The best way to figure out whether or not we're getting all the sleep we need is to figure out how a lack of sleep is really affecting our lives. If we don't recognize the problems, we probably won't act on the cause. If feeling tired in the afternoon is an everyday occurrence, if caffeine is a necessity, if you fall asleep within five minutes of your head hitting the pillow, you need more sleep] These are not healthy ways to go through the day, but we fail to recognize them as serious consequences because they have become part of our everyday realities. "People often say, 'Oh, sleep is sleep, ' but sleep is life-saving. It's restorative," Dr. Weeks says. It's wholly necessary for our physical health and mental well-being, but it's also one of the things we take for granted the most. Think about this—when was the last time you woke up feeling ready to go, and maintained that alert feeling throughout the day? Chase that feeling; it's a good one. Say no to naps Naps seem like a great way to catch up on lost sleep—plus, who doesn't love a good mid-afternoon snooze (打盹)? Sadly, relying on naps too much can only exacerbate (加重) the problem of nighttime sleep withdrawal. "Power naps are okay once in a while," Dr. Weeks admits, but he advises minimizing them to no more than thirty minutes. People who nap longer than thirty minutes often fall into the deep sleep phases, which can lead to dullness upon waking instead of the restful, wakeful state that was our intention with the nap. It is possible to catch up on sleep, but instead of napping after a late night or all-nighter, we should instead focus on getting a little more sleep over time. "If you .allow yourself a little more opportunity to sleep, in about six to eight weeks, you can wipe out your sleep debt." It seems like a lengthy process, but it is the best way for our body to recover from a lack of sleep, and, unlike naps, it will improve the flow of our sleep cycle. Create a good sleep setting There's a reason why most of us start to feel drowsy as it turns to night. When our eyes see the skies begin to darken, it signals the pineal gland (脑部的松果腺) to leak some chemical into the brain, which brings about yawning and dullness. That's why a dark room is often recommended for a restful night. Use wave machines or listen to soothing music to block out street traffic, but don't fall asleep to the TV—that can lead to sleep fragmentation. Dr. Weeks also suggests keeping business and work out of the bedroom. "Use the bedroom for only romance and sleep," he says. Part of keeping work separate from our sleeping area means blocking out anxieties and worries, too. They can cause fitful sleep and nightmares, so try not to think of them prior to bed. However, since that's almost impossible for most people, Freud might have a better solution. "Freud showed evidence that if you move anxieties physically, it'll move them out of your brain," Dr. Weeks explains. He suggests writing worries down on a piece of paper and moving it outside of the room, or at least to the bedside table. Wherever it's moved to, your anxieties will hopefully be moved away from your thoughts and dreams. It seems like lacking sleep is a source of pride within industrial countries like the United States. If we're losing sleep, that supposedly means we're being more productive and efficient. The truth is that our bodies and minds become much less efficient the more we deprive ourselves of sleep. Learning to recognize and combat the daily consequences can help us avoid the more serious; long-term effects such as depression and weight gain.
