Brief introduction of the Author Margaret Mitchell (November 8, 1900-August 16, 1949) was a famous American writer, who won the Pulitzer Prize in 1937 for her novel Gone with the Wind。Gone with the wind was her only major publication. She was born in Atlanta, Georgia. She once received a doctor degree of literature. She was struck by an automobile on her way to the cinema with her husband. And after 5 days, she died. It was her life experience and unfortunate love that made her to write a beautiful and sad love story in the Civil War. When she was a little girl, her grandma often told her about the history of their family and some war stories. Imaging herself lived in the past; she made up many small stories in which she was a heroine in a war. All of these became materials when she wrote Gone with the Wind many years later. Her mother’s death made her father lose the courage and motivation of life, as Starlet’s father got mad after his wife died. At 18 years old, she met a young handsome officer, Clift Henry, who was the Ashley in her heart. Pretty soon, they fell into love. But he lost his life in the First World War, which made her very sad. Later, she got married with a bad-tempered and cold bully. Not surprisingly, this marriage came to an end shortly. In 1944, she got married again. Her husband Marsh was a reporter, who had loved and supported Mitchell for many years. Without Marsh’s encouragement, Mitchell couldn’t finish Gone with the Wind. She spent nearly 10 years on writing the novel. It took her half of a year to check the time and places of historical events in her novel. But because of the publication of Gone with the Wind, her life became a tragedy. For half of a century, the 1000-page novel has been translated into more than 30 languages and sold more than 20,000,000 copies. Gone with the Wind is enough to establish her unshakable position in the history of world literature. 2. Brief introduction of the novel’s content It is a story about the Civil War and Reconstruction as seen from the Southern point of view. The novel opens in 1861, and the protagonist is Scarlett O’Hara. Scarlett O’Hara is a young girl who loves Ashley Wilkes. Ashley marries Melanie Hamilton and Scarlett marries Melanie’s brother Charles, but she is soon widowed. Then she marries Frank Kennedy, her sister’s fiancé, to save Tara, the family plantation, her home. Frank is also killed, and Scarlett finally marries Rhett Butler, who loves her deeply. During the story, she experiences Secession, the Civil War, Reconstruction, as well as three marriages and motherhood. 3. The social background of Gone with the wind a. The Civil War in the U.S.A. In the presidential election of 1860, the Republican Party, led by Abraham Lincoln, had campaigned against the expansion of slavery beyond the states in which it already existed. In response to the Republican victory in that election, seven states declared their secession from the Union before Lincoln took office on March 4, 1861. Both the outgoing administration of President James Buchanan and Lincoln's incoming administration rejected the legality of secession, considering it rebellion. Several other slave states rejected calls for secession at this point. Hostilities began on April 12, 1861, when Confederate forces attacked a U.S. military installation at Fort Sumter in South Carolina. Lincoln responded by calling for a volunteer army from each state to recapture federal property. This led to declarations of secession by four more slave states. Both sides raised armies as the Union assumed control of the Border States early in the war and established a naval blockade. In September 1862, Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation made ending slavery in the South a war goal, and dissuaded the British from intervening. Confederate commander Robert E. Lee won battles in the east, but in 1863 his northward advance was turned back with heavy casualties after the Battle of Gettysburg. To the west, the Union gained control of the Mississippi River after their capture of Vicksburg, Mississippi, thereby splitting the Confederacy in two. The Union was able to capitalize on its long-term advantages in men and materiel by 1864 when Ulysses S. Grant fought battles of attrition against Lee, while Union general William Tecumseh Sherman captured Atlanta and marched to the sea. Confederate resistance ended after Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. The American Civil War was one of the earliest true industrial wars. Railroads, the telegraph, steamships, and mass-produced weapons were employed extensively. The practices of total war, developed by Sherman in Georgia, and of trench warfare around Petersburg foreshadowed World War I in Europe. It remains the deadliest war in American history, resulting in the deaths of 620,000 soldiers and an undetermined number of civilian casualties. Ten percent of all Northern males 20–45 years of age died; as did 30 percent of all Southern white males aged 18–40. Victory for the North meant the end of the Confederacy and of slavery in the United States, and strengthened the role of the federal government. The social, political, economic and racial issues of the war decisively shaped the reconstruction era that lasted to 1877 b. The Reconstruction after the Civil War Reconstruction, one of the most turbulent and controversial eras in American history, began during the Civil War and ended in 1877. It witnessed America's first experiment in interracial democracy. The role of the federal government in protecting citizens' rights, and the possibility of economic and racial justice are still unresolved. Central to Reconstruction was the effort of former slaves to breathe full meaning into their newly acquired freedom, and to claim their rights as citizens. After rejecting the Reconstruction plan of President Andrew Johnson, the Republican Congress enacted laws and Constitutional amendments that empowered the federal government to enforce the principle of equal rights, and gave black Southerners the right to vote and hold office. The new Southern governments confronted violent opposition from the Ku Klux Klan and similar groups. Meantime, the North abandoned its commitment to protect the rights of the former slaves. Reconstruction ended, and white supremacy was restored throughout the South. For much of this century, Reconstruction was widely viewed as an era of corruption and misgovernment, supposedly caused by allowing blacks to take part in politics. This interpretation helped to justify the South's system of racial segregation and deny the vote to blacks. Today, because of extensive new research and profound changes in American race relations, historians view Reconstruction far more favorably, as a time of genuine progress for former slaves and the South as a whole. For all Americans, Reconstruction was a time of fundamental social, economic, and political change. The overthrow of Reconstruction left to future generations the troublesome problem of racial justice. Analysis of the character of Rhett Butler in seven aspects 1. He is handsome and charming. In the eyes of Atlanta’s people, Rhett Butler was a dashing figure and one that people turned to look at. He spent money freely, rode a wild black stallion, and wore which were always the height of style and tailoring. There were few ladies who could resist his charm when he chooses to exert. At the barbecue of Twelve Oaks, it was the first time Scarlett met Rhett Butler, “He was a tall man and powerfully built. Scarlett thought she had never seen a man with such wide shoulders, so heavy with muscles, almost too heavy to for gentility. When her eye caught his, he smiled, showing animal-white teeth below a closed-clipped black mustache. He was dark of face, swarthy as a pirate, and his eyes were as bold and black as any pirate’s appraising a galleon to be scuttled or a maiden to be ravished. There was a cool recklessness in his face and a cynical humor in his mouth as he smiled at her, she did not know who he could be, but there was undeniably a look of good blood in his dark face. It showed in the thin hawk nose over the full red lips, the high forehead and the wide-set eyes.” At a charity ball in Atlanta, they met again. Rhett Butler appeared like this: He was dressed in black broadcloth, a tall man, towering over the officers who stood near him, bulky in the shoulders but tapering to a small waist and absurdly small feet in varnished boots. His severe black suit, with fine ruffled shirt and trousers smartly strapped beneath high insteps, was oddly at variance with his physique and face, for he was foppishly groomed, the clothes of a dandy on a body that was powerful and latently dangerous in its lazy grace. His hair was jet black, and his black mustache was small and closely clipped, almost foreign looking compared with the dashing, swooping mustaches of the cavalrymen near by. He looked, and was, a man of lusty and unashamed appetites. He had an air of utter assurance, of displeasing insolence about him, and there was a twinkle of malice in his bold eyes as he stared at Scarlett。 Every time Rhett called Scarlett. She thought: there was something exciting about him that she could not analyze, something different from any man she had ever known. There was something breathtaking in the grace of his big body which made his very entrance into a room like an abrupt physical impact, something in the impertinence and bland mockery of his dark eyes that challenged her spirit to subdue him One time, Scarlett was on Rhett’s carriage. She suddenly thought how nice it was to see a nice man who was a whole, …, and who looked well fed and healthy. He was so well dressed, too. His coat and trousers were actually of the same material and they filled him. …. He looked as if he had not a care in the world and that in itself was startling these days, …. His brown face was bland and his mouth, red lipped, clear cut as a woman’s, frankly sensual, smiled carelessly. The muscles of his body rippled against his well-trained clothes, as he got in beside her, and, as always, the sense of his great physical power struck her like a blow. She watched the swell of his powerful shoulders against the cloth with a fascination that was disturbing, a little frightening. His body seemed so tough and hard, as tough and hard as his keen mind. His was such an easy, graceful strength, lazy as a panther stretching in the sun, alert as a panther to spring and strike. Above all, we can see Rhett is very handsome and charming. 2. He is a renegade. Rhett Butler was descended from a noble family, but he is not a gentleman. He was a renegade who was called a scamp, a rascal and a gambler He had the worst reputation and he wasn’t received in the best parlors. He had been expelled from West Point for drunkenness and “something about women”. That terrific scandal concerning the Charleston girl he had compromised and the brother he had killed was public property. He is a black sheep of a lovely family-his father, a charming old gentleman with an iron will and a ramrod for a backbone had cast him out without a penny when he was twenty and even stricken his name from the family Bible. About this, he said:“ Why am I the black sheep of the Butler family? For this reason and no other-I didn’t conform to Charleston and I couldn’t. And Charleston is the South, only intensified. I wonder if you realize yet what a bore it is. So many things that one must do because they have always been done. So many things, quite harmless, that one must not do for the same reason. So many things that annoyed me by their senselessness. Not marrying a young lady, of whom you have probably heard, was merely the last straw. Why should I marry a boring fool, simply because an accident prevents me from getting her home before dark? And why permit her wild-eyed brother to shoot and kill me, when I could shoot straighter? If I had been a gentleman, of course, I would have let him kill me and that would have wiped the blot from the Butler escutcheon. But- I like to live. And so I have lived and I have had a good time…”① He thought virtues are stupid. And he flouted the conventions. As a gentleman, he should appear to believe a lady even when he knew she was lying. That was Southern chivalry. A gentleman always obeyed the rules and said the correct things and made life easier for a lady. But Rhett seemed not to care for rules and evidently enjoyed talking of the things no one ever talked about. When Rhett and Scarlett were together, he annoyed her frequently and got her into a speechless temper. Rhett’s eyes ran up and down her figure, which made her feel unclothed. Although he knew that Scarlett was a widow, he encouraged her to dance, got her out of mourning several years too soon, and lured her into accepting a gift which no lady can accept and still remain a lady. A gentleman should love a girl who was mousy and no sense at all. But Rhett loved Scarlett because she was not a lady. He said: “however, ladies have seldom held any charms for me. I know what they are thinking, but they never have the courage or lack of breeding to say what they are thinking. And that, in time, become a bore. But you are a girl of rare spirit, very admirable spirit, and I take off my hat to you. ”② A gentleman shouldn’t look at a woman who is pregnant. In addition, he shouldn’t talk about it. Rhett didn’t think so. “I know I’m not a gentleman, in view of the fact that pregnant women do not embarrass me as they should. I find it possible to treat them as normal creatures and not look at the ground or the sky or anywhere else in the universe except their waist lines-and then cast at them those furtive glances I’ve always thought the height of indecency. … It’s a normal state and women should be proud of it, instead of hiding behind closed doors as if they’d committed a crime.”③ All the things he did and all the words he said prove he is a renegade. 3. He is cynical and sagacious. Rhett bore an impersonal contempt for everyone and everything in the South, the Confederacy in particular, and took no pains to conceal it. It was his remarks about the Confederacy that made Atlanta look at him first in bewilderment, then coolly and then with hot rage. He seemed to take pleasure not only in affronting the sincere and red- hot loyalties of Atlanta but in presenting himself in the worst possible light. When well-meaning people complimented him on his bravery in running the blockade, he blandly replied that he was always frightened when in danger, as frightened as were the brave boys at the front. Everyone knew there had never been a cowardly Confederate soldier and they found this statement peculiarly irritating. He always referred to the soldiers as“our brave boys”and“our heroes in gray”and did it in such a way as to convey the utmost in insult. When daring young lady, hoping for a flirtation, thanked him for being one of the heroes who fought for them, he bowed and declared that such was not the case, for he would do the same thing for the Yankee women if the same amount of money were involved. When praised for his services to the Confederacy, he unfailingly replied that blockading was a business with him. If he could make as much money out of government contracts, he would say, picking out with his eyes those who had government contracts, then he would certainly abandon the hazards of blockading and take to selling shoddy cloth, sanded sugar, spoiled flour and rotten leather to the Confederacy. He not only affronted the town with insinuations of venality on the part of men in high places and slurs on the courage of the men in the field, but he took pleasure in tricking the dignified citizenry into embarrassing situations. He could no more resist pricking the conceits, the hypocrisies and the flamboyant patriotism of those about him than a small boy can resist putting a pin into a balloon. He neatly deflated the pompous and exposed the ignorant and the bigoted, and he did it in such subtle ways, drawing his victims out by his seemingly courteous interest, that they never were quite certain what had happened until they stood exposed as windy, high flown and slightly ridiculous. 4. He has a clear understanding of the society and war, and has the courage to say the truth. Rhett told Scarlett“our Southern way of living is as antiquated as the feudal system of the Middle Ages. The wonder is that it’s lasted as long as it has. It had to go and it’s going now.” “This empire we’re live in-the south-the confederacy-the Cotton Kingdom –it’s breaking up right under our feet.” “The idea of assistance from abroad is just a newspaper invention to keep up the morale of the South. The confederacy is doomed. It’s living on its hump now, like the camel, even the largest of humps aren’t inexhaustible.”④ At the barbecue of Twelve Oaks, all the men shouted excited: “we could lick them in a month. One Southerner can lick twenty Yankees.”Rhett told them in a flat draw: “I have seen many things that you all have not seen. The thousands of immigrants who would be glad to fight for the Yankees for food and a few dollars, the factories ,the foundries, the shipyards, the iron and coal mines-all the things we haven’t got. Why, all we have is cotton and slaves and arrogance. They would lick us in a month.”④ At Mrs.Elsing’s silver musicale, Rhett talked about“the Cause is not sacred”loudly: “All wars are sacred, to those who have to fight them. If the people who started wars did not make them sacred, who would be foolish enough to fight? But no matter what rallying cries the orators give to the idiots who fight, no matter what noble purpose they assign to wars, there is never but one reason for a war. And that is money. All wars are in reality money squabbles. But so few people ever realize it. Their ears are full of bugles and drums and the fine words from stay-at-home orators. Sometimes the rallying cry is‘Liberty!’sometimes‘Cotton, Slavery and States’Rights’!”⑤ At Aunt Pitty’s party, Mr.Meade said arrogantly:“There will be just one brief skirmish and the Yankees will skedaddle back into Tennessee. General Johnston and his army stands there in the mountains like an iron rampart. Sherman will never pass. He will never dislodge Old Joe. One confederate is worth a dozen Yankees.” Rhett spoke out the truth: “Sherman has over one hundred thousand men, now that his reinforcements have come up. But General Johnston had only about forty thousand, counting the deserters who were encouraged to come back to the colors by the last victory. The Confederate soldiers has no bullets for his gun and no shoes on his feet and no food in their stomach.”⑥ Only Rhett could say these words. Other man didn’t know or dare to say. 5. He is shrewd and farsighted. Rhett told Scarlett that there were two times for making big money, one in the up building of a country and the other in its destruction. Slow money on the building, fast money in the crack-up. Captain Butler was one of the best pilots in the South and that he was reckless and utterly without nerves. Reared in Charleston, he knew every inlet, creek, shoal and rock of the Carolina coast near that port, and he was equally at home in the waters around Wilmington. He had never lost a boat or even been forced to dump a cargo. At the onset of the war, he had emerged from obscurity with enough money to buy a swift boat and now, when blockaded goods realized two thousand per cent on each cargo, he owned four boats. He had good pilots and paid them well, and they slid out of Charleston and Wilmington on dark nights, bearing cotton for Nassau, England and Canada. The cotton mills of England were standing idle and the workers were starving, and any blockader who could outwit the Yankee fleet could command his own price in Liverpool. “Any loyal Confederate who had a thousand dollars in cash in 1861 could have done what I did, but now few were mercenary enough to take advantage of their opportunities! As for instance, right after Fort Sumter fell and before the blockade was established, I bought up several thousand bales of cotton at dirt-cheap prices and ran them to England. They are still there in warehouses in Liverpool. I have never sold them. I am holding them until the England mills have to have cotton and will give me any price I ask. I would not surprised if I got a dollars a pound.”⑦ “I give myself about six months more of blockading and then I am though. After that, it will be too risky. And I will sell my boats to some foolish Englishman who thinks he can slip them though. But one way or the other, it is not bothering me. I have made money enough, and it is in English banks and in gold. None of this worthless paper for me.”⑧ Rhett sold his boats when blockading grew too hazardous, and he was openly engaged in food speculation. During the war, it is a poverty-stricken world in the South. But Rhett had a half billion dollars“Half the money is honestly mine, honestly made with the aid of honest Union patriots who were willing to sell out the Union behind its back—for one-hundred-per-cent profit on their goods. Part I made out of my little investment in cotton at the beginning of the war, the cotton I bought cheap and sold for a dollar a pound when the British mills were crying for it. Part I got from food speculation. Why should I let the Yankees have the fruits of my labor? But the rest did belong to the Confederacy.”⑨ In a word, he is so shrewd and farsighted that he can make a lot of money. 6. He is kind, helpful and he loves the South in his own way. Rhett , hearing of this thing that Maybelle was eager to have a white satin dress to marry, brought in from England yards and yards of gleaming white satin and a lace veil and presented them to her as a wedding gift. He not only brought her the satin but also he was able to give excellent hints on the making of the wedding dress. When he knew Melanie was pregnant and anxious to know the news of Ashley, he consoled her and did his best to find out the news. He went to New Orleans frequently to see a boy who was his legal ward. He lent Merriwether ten thousand dollars without even a note to help her start a bakery. He was such a kind father that he spoiled Bonnie, for in all things she pleased him. In the war, Rhett was a great blockader, whose boats took out cotton for the Confederacy and brought in the war materials for which the South was desperate. He joined the army at the eleventh-hour, Scarlett thought: “ why had he gone, stepping off into the dark, into the war, into a Cause that was lost, into a world that was mad? Why had he gone? Now he had set his varnished boots upon a bitter road where hunger tramped with tireless stride and wounds and weariness and heartbreak ran like yelping wolves. And the end of the road was death. He need not have gone. ” In the Reconstruction, Rhett saved the lives of some Atlanta’s most prominent men with his resourcefulness although they hated him so much. He killed a nigger because he was uppity to a lady. With Rhett’s help, Georgia once more had a Democratic governor and Georgia belonged to herself. He said: “I am now a Democrat in good standing, devoted to my last drop of blood to recovering our beloved state from the hands of her ravishers!” “I am working harder than I ever worked with a shovel in the gold rush, trying to help get the election organized. … At last I have come to agree with you and the Confederate gold is being spent to get the Confederates back into power.”⑩ Rhett has a kind heart and he loves the South deeply. 7. Rhett Butler loves Scarlett O’Hara as much as a man can love a woman. Rhett loved Scarlett since the first time he saw her. He was willing to, indeed he did, and did everything for her except telling her he loved her. Whenever Scarlett needed help, Rhett would appear. In the war, Rhett saved Scarlett from the South custom of burying widows alive. He encouraged her to dance, got her out of mourning and lured her into accepting a gift which no lady could accept. He didn’t leave Atlanta when the siege was coming because he wanted to rescue her. Rhett came to the front porch when Scarlett was blue because she couldn’t go to Tara to see her sick mother. He comforted her and told her, “I have wanted you since the first time I laid my eyes on you, in the hall of Twelve Oaks, I want you more than I have ever wanted any woman-and I have waited longer for you than I’ve ever waited for any woman.” Later, he helped her flee from the fire Atlanta with the horse that he took a risk to steal. He said to her: “ I love you, Scarlett, because we are so much alike, renegades, both of us, dear, and selfish rascals.” In the reconstruction, Scarlett came to the jail and asked for money because of the tax on Tara. Rhett’s hands were jammed in his pockets in hard fists because he was straining at his own impotence. He hurried to her as soon as he was released, to make sure whether she had gotten the money, to lend her the money buying a mill. In 1866, Atlanta was more ill bred and turbulent. There were a large number of outrages on women. What’s worse, Scarlett was lonely because no one understood her. At this time, Rhett always drew rein and talked and drove her on the rounds almost every day. He listened to her moans, gave her advice, and protected her from the danger. At the night of Frank’s death, Scarlett wanted to someone who could comfort her, quiet her fears, explain to her just what were these confused fears which made her heart sink with such cold sickness. Rhett who is the one person could help her. He made her relaxed and asked her to marry him. After married, Rhett made Scarlett do whatever she like, offered her a happy, rich life and lightened her burden of life. He often looked at her like a cat at a mouse hole because he loved her so much. He picked her up in his arms like a child and held her close, when she woke from the old nightmare. He loved their daughter, Bonnie. If Bonnie wanted the moon she could have it, if he could reach it for her. Rhett was in misery and very drunk when Archie told him what had happened to Scarlett and Ashley. He said: “ I’m sorry because you are such a child. A child crying for the moon…. I’m sorry for you-sorry to see you throwing away happiness with both hands and reaching out for something that would never make you happy. … You would never know him, never know what he was thinking about, never understand him… whereas, we, dear wife of my bosom, could have been perfectly happy if you give a chance, for we are so much like. … We could have been happy, for I loved you and I know you.” Scarlett had a miscarriage. Rhett, drunk and sobbing, was sprawled on the floor, crying, his head in Melanie’s lap. He was mad and crazy with jealousy for he loved her very much. Whatever happened, Rhett loved Scarlett until Bonnie died. He thought she couldn’t forgive him. He told her the love till she realized it, but his love was wore out. “Did it ever occur to you that I loved you as much as a man can love a woman? Loved you for years before I finally got you? During the war I’d go away and try to forget you, but I couldn’t and always had to come back. After the war I risked arrest, just come back to find you. I cared so much I believe I would have killed Frank Kennedy if he hadn’t died when he did. I loved you but I couldn’t let you know it. You’re so brutal to those who love you, Scarlett. You take their love and hold it over their heads like a whip.” “I knew you didn’t love me when I married you. I knew about Ashley, as you see. But, fool as I was, I thought I could make you care. Laugh, if you like, but I wanted to take care of you, to pet you, to give you everything you wanted. I wanted to marry you and protect you and give you a free rein in anything that would make you happy-just as Bonnie. You’d had such a struggle, Scarlett. No one knew better than I what you had gone through and I wanted you to stop fighting and let me fight for you. I wanted you to play like a child-for you were a child, a brave, frightened, bull-headed child. I think you are still a child. No one but a child could be so headstrong and so insensitive.” “It was so obvious that we were meant for each other. So obvious that I was the only man of your acquaintance who could love you after knowing you as you really are-hard and greedy and unscrupulous, like me. I loved you and I took the chance. I thought Ashley would fade out of your mind, but, I tried everything I knew and nothing worked. And I loved you, Scarlett. If you had only let me, I could have loved you as gently and as tenderly as ever a man loved a woman. But I couldn’t let you know, for I knew you’d think me weak and try to use my love against me.” “I liked to think that Bonnie was you, a little girl again, before the war and poverty had done things for you. She was so like to you, so willful, so brave and gay and full of high spirits, and I could pet her and spoil her –just as I wanted to pet you. But she wasn’t like you-she loved me. It was a blessing that I could take the love you didn’t want and give it to her…. When she went, she took everything.”⑪ Conclusion Rhett Butler, the leading man-role of Gone with the Wind, is a handsome and charming man. There are few ladies who can resist his charms. Whenever he appears in the street, there is something heartbreaking in the grace of his body like an abrupt physical impact. He is a renegade aristocrat originally from Charleston. He flouts all the old conventions. He says the Southern way of living which had to go is as antiquated as the feudal system of the Middle Ages. He is cynical and sagacious. He bears an impersonal contempt for everyone and everything in the South and takes no pains to conceal it. He not only affronts the town with insinuations of venality on the part of men in high places and slurs on the courage of the men in the field, but he takes pleasure in tricking the dignified citizenry into embarrassing situations. He knows the situations of the war clearly and has the courage to say the truth. He is called a traitor, but he fights for the South though he knows the war must lose. What’s more, he helps Georgia return its own hands. He is so shrewd and farsighted that he earns much money while other men are very poor. He has a kind heart to do a lot of good deeds. He loves Scarlett as much as a man can love a woman. Whenever she needs help, he will appear. He is willing to do anything for her. The readers will remember Rhett Butler for ever.
