爱丁堡大学 Introduction This degree programme teaches you the general principles of law and how to apply them to specific situations and cases. You will develop analytical skills, legal research skills and learn how to present an argument clearly, accurately and persuasively. As a Law student, you will learn about the formal structures of our society and will receive an introduction to the practice of law. You can study topics including criminal law, commercial law and human rights law in preparation for a career as a lawyer. You can also apply the skills and experience you develop to a range of different careers. Edinburgh’s School of Law has a strong international reputation for research and offers excellent facilities for studying law, including the impressive range of legal materials available in its Law and Europa Library, which is the largest university law library in Scotland. What you'll study Year 1 In Years 1 and 2 you will be introduced to general legal principles and legal techniques and will study core courses including Contract Law, Criminal Law, Property Law and European Union Law. These courses are designed to cover the professional requirements of the Law Society of Scotland for entry to the legal profession. Students on the Graduate LLB will complete their studies at the end of Year 2. Year 2 Same as year 1. Year 3 In your third year you will have the opportunity to specialise and you can choose from a wide range of honours courses, including Commercial Law, International Law and Criminology. If you are studying Law with a language you will spend your third year abroad. There are also opportunities to study abroad in Europe, North America or the Far East through various exchange programmes, including the ERASMUS programme and the School of Law’s North American exchange programme. Year 3 is the final year of the LLB ordinary degree. Year 4 In your fourth year you will continue your honours study, choosing further courses from the range of honours courses to expand your specialist knowledge. You will also write a dissertation. This will help you develop your legal research and writing skills. This is the final year of the LLB (Hons) degree. If you are planning to enter the Scottish legal profession you will also need to complete the Diploma in Legal Practice after you graduate. You can apply for the Diploma during the final year of the LLB programme. On the LLB programme you will study Scots Law. Students interested in practising law in England or Wales may not benefit from studying Law in Scotland as there are significant differences between English and Scots Law. The Scottish system Students at Scottish universities typically study for four years. This differs significantly from degree structures in the rest of the UK, and is more similar to those found in many other parts of the world. Our flexible four-year degrees give you a breadth of study not available in more restrictive degree structures. Our MA honours, BSc honours and BEng honours degrees are four-year undergraduate degrees Our undergraduate bachelors honours degree programmes normally last four years. These are broadly equivalent to the three-year BA, BSc and BEnghonours in England or the four-year Bachelors degree in the USA. The LLB Degree Why choose a four-year degree? Our flexible four-year degrees give you a breadth of study not available in more restrictive degree structures. It can be difficult to decide on one course of study, so we let you try a range of subjects before specialising. During the first two years of most of our degree programmes, you can study subjects outside your main subject area. This allows plenty of time to work out what you enjoy most and where your real talents lie. If you know exactly what you want to do, you can put your learning into context, by taking courses in outside subject areas that lend a depth and breadth of understanding. The LLB Degree At the University of Edinburgh, there are two main types of undergraduate law degree: the LL.B. Honours degree which lasts for four years, and the two year LL.B. Ordinary degree (which is identical to the first two years of the LL.B. Honours degree). For those studying at university for the first time, the degree you will be taking will be the four year LL.B. Honours degree. In the first two years of the degree you will study all of the law courses you need to get a general introduction to law, and which will prepare you for a career as a lawyer in Scotland, enabling you to apply, should you so wish, for further professional training. Having passed all these 'core' courses (such as Criminal Law, European Community Law, and Property Law), you then have the opportunity in your third and fourth years to choose from a wide range of courses, such as Intellectual Property Law, Commercial Law, Media Law, Human Rights Law, and Criminology, and can study these specialist courses in greater depth. In addition, you will be able to write a dissertation on a law topic that really interests you - an excellent opportunity to develop your skills in legal research and writing. As an alternative to the LL.B. in Law, it is also possible to study Law alongside one of a number of other subjects (for example Law and French, or Law and Politics) thus allowing you to study other subjects at university level and to graduate with a joint Honours degree. The LLB degree is a very flexible one. All students can, in consultation with their Director of Studies, arrange a programme of courses specifically tailored to their individual requirements. What Will I Study? Core Courses 1st Year Legal Reasoning and Legal System Contract and Unjustified Enrichment Family Law Ordinary Public Law of the UK and Scotland Delict Ordinary Further Courses 2nd Year Jurisprudence Property Law Ordinary 1 Property Law Ordinary 2 Business Entities Commercial Law Ordinary Public Law and Individual Rights Criminal Law Ordinary European Community Law A Taxation Ordinary Evidence Trusts and Succession Ordinary In your third and fourth years you will choose a number elective courses from the list of available honours options. In your fourth year you will also complete a dissertation. Mixed Honours LLB Degrees It is possible for students to combine legal study with study of another discipline. At present the School of Law offers mixed honours degrees in which law can be combined with any of the following: Politics, Economics, Sociology, History, Accounting, Business Studies, Social Policy, Celtic, French, German, International Relations, Social Anthropology and Spanish. Such degrees are attractive to a student who wishes to study the law at university level but also wishes to develop his or her knowledge of another discipline to university level. Graduating with a joint Honours degree can also be very attractive to employers, as well as being intellectually interesting degrees in their own right. One of the attractions of our mixed Honours law degrees is that it is possible to revert to a 'pure' law degree at (or indeed before) the end of the first year, or even at a later date, should you decide you wish to do so. This means that the mixed Honours degree allows you to keep your options open even after you've started your degree here at Edinburgh. Courses Please note that the courses listed here are for graduating Edinburgh students only. To establish which of these courses are open to visiting students/erasmus exchange students, please consult the visiting students prospectus. The National Student Survey is now open for submissions. All final-year students are encouraged to complete the survey.
